Burn ban back

The Morrisburg Canada Day Committee is getting ready to have a laugh to support the fun-filled Canada Day event that they are planning for July 1, 2015.

The commitee is bringing back the popular Yuk Yuks comedy show, with proceeds going towards Canada Day 2015 in Morrisburg.

The funds support the general activities of the day, which include a petting zoo, rides and more.

The Yuk Yuks fundraiser was so popular last year that it sold out, so organizers recommend that those planning to attend book their tables, and buy their tickets early.

“It was really well supported last year, so we hope everyone who joined us last year, will do the same again this year,” said Canada Committee member Viviane Martin.

The Yuk Yuks comedy show, headlined by returning favourite Chris Quigley, takes place March 28, 2015, 7 p.m., at the Morrisburg Legion. 

Tickets can be purchased in various locations throughout the community. Entire tables can be reserved by contacting Jim and Viviane Martin at 613-543-0779.

Viviane and Jim Martin are part of the Canada Day Committee, which is a stand alone organization with the mandate of hosting Morrisburg’s Canada Day festivities. It is not affiliated with any other service organization or the municipality.

“We do this strictly to volunteer for this for the community,” said Jim Martin. “This day wouldn’t happen, if it weren’t for these volunteers,” added Viviane.

The committee has recently lost some of its volunteers due to various life circumstances, and is in need of some new members. They welcome anyone willing to join the group, and are open to new ideas.

Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign has been supporting local communities since 1996. 

Fast forward ten years, and the Winchester location made its first gift benefitting the WDMH Foundation in support of the Winchester District Memorial Hospital.

Since then, a total of $55,267 has been given to the WDMH Foundation, as a result of the Smile Cookie Campaigns at Tim Hortons locations in Long Sault, Morrisburg and Winchester. 

This year, $8,304 was raised, and the cookies were so popular that they sold out before the campaign was over.

Owners Denise and Robert St. Denis, along with their nephew, Corey Adams, and all of the staff at the three locations, have worked tirelessly every year during the Smile Cookie Campaign in the last week of September. 

They believe in supporting WDMH, and they want to see the campaign succeed for the Hospital.

Troy Cross, Executive Director of the WDMH Foundation shared his gratitude, “many thanks to all of the customers who purchased a Smile Cookie this past fall, and to the hard-working staff at every location for helping to put smiles on patients’ faces with every sale”.

The annual three day Christmas Show staged by the Morrisburg and District Arts and Crafts Association in the Legion Hall in Morrisburg, Friday, November 18 to Sunday, November 20, saw attendance down this year, but feedback from those who did attend was very encouraging. 

“We thought it was a pretty good show, and a lot of the people who visited thought it was a great show,” says association president Linda Schenck. 

“I had a lot of positive feedback. Our visitors told us they thought we had a great assortment of crafts. Unfortunately, we didn’t have as many people go through as we would have liked. Some of our artists reported good sales while others could have done better.” 

With some 20 plus participants in the show, the Association was once again very pleased to be able to give back to the community with donations to Winchester District Memorial Hospital and the Dundas County Hospice.
