Lions hang tough against the Vikings

The season is underway at the Morrisburg Golf Club. The course opened in late in April and things were looking pretty good until the area was hit with some heavy rain. But the fairways have dried up again, and both the ladies and men got their weekly evenings played.

Although both evenings kicked off the previous week, conditions weren’t great for either, and the women did not get to play at all due to the rain.

The first ladies night did see 48 ladies out to enjoy a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, and they were all back last week, May 7, when they officially hit the course for the first time on a beautiful sunny afternoon and evening.

The sponsor for the ladies first night was Aikman Trailer Sales, and Upper Canada Playhouse sponsored the May 7 evening.

Judy Laurin, Laurie Dillabough and Katherine Alguire played “a minute to win it’ game to win tickets to the Playhouse. All were successful on their first attempt.

The closest to the pin shot on the par three 11th hole was made by Paula Locke. Joanne Baker produced the closest shot on the par three 14th, and Lorna Young was closest on the 17th.

Coming up this week, the ladies night sponsor is Scotiabank.

The men got their season rolling last Thursday night, May 8. The evening sponsor was Eldon Horner, and the low shooter was Lance LePage with a 35. Andy Patenaude won B flight with a 40, and Gary O’Neil had the low score in C flight with a 42.

Net winners were Lindsay Weegar in A flight, Wally Baker in B flight and Barry Henderson in C flight.

Closest to the pin winners were Floyd McRea on the 14th and Kent Dawley on the 17th.

Coming up this week, men’s night is sponsored by Home Hardware.

Also coming up on Saturday, May 24 is the Home Hardware Mixed two ball. Sign up sheets are available at the club and non-club members are welcome. The event will get rolling at 10 a.m. with a shot gun start.

This year’s Morrisburg Men’s Open has returned to its June 21st date, and registrations can be made at the club. Tee offs for the men’s open will start at 10 a.m. The day will include golf, prizes and a dinner. For more info please contact club captain Andy Patenaude or call the clubhouse.

It was a big night on the course for Bruce Kerr. Men’s night last Thursday, June 25, was highlighted by Kerr’s eagle two on the 340 yard par four second hole, a score that had little trouble holding up in the skins game.

Once again it was Kurtis Barkley leading the men’s night field, this week with a two under par, 32. Second spot in A flight field went to Brandon Cousineau with a 37, while James Morrell and Kevin Whitteker got the nods for the low net wins.

Bill Collins shot a 39 for the B flight win, while Bruce Kerr was right on his heels with a 40 in second place. Net winners in B flight were Francis Barkley and Garry Whitteker.

In C flight, it Peter Elliot stepping into the winners circle with a 44, while Steve Summers was next with a 46. The D flight win went to Winston Muir with a 49. The C flight net winner was John Wrinn.

Bill Dejong struck the long drive of the evening, and Francis Barkley and Brandon Cousineau produced the closest to the hole shots on the par three, sixth and ninth holes respectively.

In ladies night action on Wednesday, June 24, Muriel Whitteker led the field with a 43. Mary Whittaker won B flight with a 49, Great McGann C flight with a 54 and Sue Alexander D flight with a 70.

Net winners were Sheila Bush in A flight, Joan Findlay in B and Cyndie Summers in C. Closest to the hole winners were Pat Reaney on six and Sheila Bush on the ninth hole.

James Morrell and Bill Dejong kicked off the week’s action at the Tuesday night Scramble with the low net win. Two teams, Christena Yelle and Kurtis Barkley and Brandon Cousineau and Bryden Van Kessell, finished tied for the low gross win with 33s.

With the end of the regular season now just a few weeks away, the Morrisburg Junior B Lions continue to entertain one of the longest losing streaks in team history.

This past weekend a pair of losses to the Prescott Flyers, 4-1 and the Gananoque Islanders, 4-2 brought their St. Lawrence Division stats to 27 losses in 30 games.

Friday night on home ice, the Lions managed just one goal against the visiting Prescott Flyers.

Drew Veenstra got that one on the Lions power play, with help from Chris Pearson and Michael Paquette, at 13:18 of the first period.

The 1-0 Lions advantage lasted until well into the second period, when the Flyers Patrick Rock evened it at 14:18 and Andrew DeKroom gave them a 2-1 lead at 15:41.

Early in the third, the Flyers went up 4-1 on goals by Ryan Romans and Trevor Kelecher.

Jarerett Pitt was in the Flyers net for the win, and John Gilmer handled the Lions loss. Pitt handled just 23 shots on net while Gilmer gave up four goals on 36 shots.

The Lions sat out seven minor penalties, while the Flyers were assessed  eight and a 10 minute misconduct for checking to the head.

Sunday night in Gananoque, the Islanders were first on the scoreboard with a Matt Tustin goal. 

In the last minute of the first period Liam Morrow, with help from A.J. Jarvis, counted for the Lions to even it.

The Islanders took charge in the second period with two unanswered counters, and went up 4-1 at 9:28 of the third.

Steven Savage scored on the Lions power play at 17:17 of the third to cut the gap to 4-2, but that was it.

Cole Blanchard and Drew Veenstra got the assists on the Savage goal.

Ryan Kaszuba was in net for the Islanders win, and John Gilmer handled the loss. Shots on net were 35 for the Islanders and 31 for the Lions.

The Lions were assessed eight minor penalties, a five minute fighting major and a game misconduct for checking from behind.

The Islanders sat out 12 minors, two five minute fighting majors, and a 10 minute misconduct.

Coming up this Friday night, January 10 the Lions are on the road to Westport. Sunday, January 12 they host the Char-Lan Rebels.
