Seaway High golfers win SD&G

 

After an opening game wake-up call, the charged-up South Dundas Bantam Rep Lions answered with three consecutive victories to claim the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League championship in four games against the Perth/Lanark Wings.

The Lions lost the series opener on home ice on Wednesday, March 21, 4-1, but rebounded with a 5-2 win in game two and a 3-1 win in game three in Morrisburg on Sunday, March 22.

That gave the Lions a four points to two advantage heading into the Wings’ barn on Monday night, March 23.

This time out, the Lions left little doubt, building a 2-0 first period lead and doubling it to 4-0 in the second. They went up 6-0 early in the third, with the Wings finally getting on the scoreboard with two goals against Lions goaltender Zack Frawley, late in the frame.

That was it, and the Lions hung on for the 6-2 game four win and the UCMHL championship.

Randy Fawcett and Riley Barry led the Lions’ scoring with two goals each and singles came from the sticks of Andrew Jarvis and Evan Mullin.

It’s been a busy week for curlers from the Morrisburg Curling Club.

Mahlon Locke, Kathy Norg, and Wendy and Jim Casselman competed in the Metcalfe Mushroom Bonspiel recently. There were 24 teams entered, 22 of which were from Ottawa. In their three games, our folks played three Navy teams. They played well, and came home with mushroom prizes.

Our day ladies entered a team in a Navan bonspiel last week, and came home victorious. Alice Thompson, Susan McIntosh, Betty Locke and Sharon Van Allen defeated a foursome from Carleton Heights in the morning, enjoyed a delicious lunch and went onto the ice for a match against the R.A. Centre representatives. As in the morning, the Morrisburg team dominated, and came home with the championship and the prize money.

On Saturday, the Morrisburg women hosted the Broder, a two-team, four club competition, featuring Morrisburg, Metcalfe, Winchester and Russell. Our Morrisburg team of Greta McGann, Jenna Harrington, Kathy Hardy and Rachelle Eves won their first game against a Metcalfe foursome, and their second against a team from Russell. This put them in the ‘A’ final in the evening against the top Winchester team. Our Morrisburg people played well in the eight-end match, but the skilful Winchester quartet were able to eke out a win for the trophy and prizes. 

Our second Morrisburg team of Susan McIntosh, Kathy Norg, Leanne McCooeye and Wendy Casselman won their first match against the other Metcalfe team, but dropped their second in a tight game with the other Winchester squad. Winchester went on to play Russell, and Russell shook hands before the 8th end. It was an enjoyable day, with a fine lunch, and a delicious evening meal catered by Bill Laurin and his committee. The other volunteers, including our ice technician and his committee, kept the day running smoothly and on time.

Sunday, January 22 saw our Little Rockers hosting their Big Four Bonspiel, with the same format. Morrisburg #1, Keaghan Lowson, Kendrew Byers, Ewan Wilson and Nolan Belanger dropped their first game to a Metcalfe foursome. Next they lost to Russell and were eliminated from further play. 

Our other team, Morrisburg #2, consisted of Calvin Scott, Emily Poirier, Wyatt Jones and Jonathan Charette. They lost their first match to Winchester #2. Next they played Russell #2, who went on to the playoff with Winchester and defeated them in the ‘B’ final. The two Metcalfe teams met in the A final, and they took home the ‘A’ shield.

The third of four Parnell competitions will be held in Prescott, Friday, with two Morrisburg teams attempting to wrest the Parnell Trophy back. Again this time, four local teams vied for the privilege, with the playoff games last Friday. Sid Morrell, Raymond Benoit, Neil Williams and Al Harriman did battle with Peter Zeran, Jack Dikland, Karl Duncan and Earl Jeacle. It was an exciting, seesaw match, with the winner decided on the final rock in the last end. The Morrell team will attend the Prescott competition. In the other game, Martin Schneckenburger, Ron Beaupre, George Rutley and Bud Perry played Jack Barkley, Dave King, Doug Jarvis and Andy Patenaude. Jack Barkley’s foursome was victorious there.

The mixed invitational bonspiel had to be cancelled because of low numbers. Instead, the Hugh Hutchinson funspiel will be on today, with 10 teams of senior men in competition for the Hutchinson Trophy, and the stick bonspiel is tomorrow.

The South Dundas “Parcoll Auto Parts” Novice B Lions continued their hot streak adding two more victories to their win column. 

The Lions finished the first half of their schedule with a record of 6-2-4 and were looking to improve their standings coming into the weekend games.

On Saturday, during Lions Day, the Lions faced-off against the North Dundas Demons and defeated them 7-1. 

Offensively for the Lion’s Nolan Henry and Kayne McCadden both scored hat-tricks, while line mate Kolby Latulippe added a single.

The Lions scored early and often, building a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period. 

Kayne McCadden scored at 8:33 on a breakaway pass from Nolan Henry with Trent Rae picking up the secondary assist.

McCadden scored five minutes later on a shot from the slot after getting another pass from Henry off the left wing boards. 

A minute later, while shorthanded, McCadden got a breakaway pass from Trent Rae toachieve the ‘natural hat-trick’.

Nolan Henry then picked up the scoring stick to net one while playing 4-4. Henry broke into the Demons end and shot a puck on the ice just inside the right corner of the net. 

Kolby Latulippe would net one for himself jumping on a McCadden rebound for a 5-0 Lions lead.

Joshua Foley responded for the Demons on a shot from the blue line which beat Lion’s goaltender Brendan Shaver on a shot from the blue line. 

Henry responded for the Lions when he picked up a loose puck in front of the net and shot it home for his second of the game.

In the third period, Henry finished off the scoring. He completing his hat trick when he caught a pass from Emytt Fetterly at centre ice and deked out both Demon defenders before depositing the puck in the top corner of their net.

Sunday, the Lions hosted the Smith Falls #2 Bears and defeated them 5-3. 

The Lion’s again scored early as Joshua Broad banged home a pass from Ben Lapier from the front of the net. 

Owen Fetterly had dug the puck out along the right wing board getting it to Lapier who made the nice centering pass.

A few minutes later the Lions grabbed a 2-0 lead when Kayne McCadden made a lead pass to Kolby Latulippe. The puck deflected back to McCadden who broke in to beat the Bears defender and goalie. 

Before the period ended the Bears tied it 2-2 on a pair of goals by Owen Watson.

Opening the second period, McCadden won the face-off forward. He chased it down to break in on the Bears goalie alone and beat him to give the Lions the lead again, this time for good. 

The Bears had some chances but were cut off many times by the Lions’ defenders. 

Spencer Barclay and Cassidy Bilmer continued their strong play, cutting down would-be attackers as they crossed the blue line. 

Bilmer played a big role on defense moving the puck well out of the Lions end and keeping the puck in at the offensive line.

Ben Lapier scored late in the second period, and Owen Fetterly scored in the third. Joshua Broad and Lapier picked up assists on the Fetterly goal.

The South Dundas “Parcoll Auto Parts” Novice B Lions next home game is Sunday, December 18th at 1 p.m. versus the Kemptville #1 Panthers.
