VanHoof earns spot at provincial championship

MORRISBURG – Morrisburg and District Figure Skating club member Kristyn VanHoof is going to the provincial championships.

Skating at the STARSkate Invitational Championships in Bowmanville February 17-19, Vanhoof earned a third place finish in the Star 7 ladies short program. She skated in a field of 16 competitors from across Eastern Ontario.“Kristyn was able to remain focused during her event,” said Danielle Napier, MDSC professional coach. “She has a very difficult double-flip and an even more difficult double loop, double loop combination.”

VanHoof also competed in the Star 8 ladies long program, finishing in second place in a field of 19 skaters, earning the title of Star 8 ladies silver medalist. Her long program consisted of six jumps with three double-double combinations, and she earned bonus points for spins in her routine.

“Kristyn skated with determination and confidence, she made her coach proud,” Napier said.

The top three skaters in each region across the province move on to the provincial championships.

“I had two personal best skates, I am very proud of that,” VanHoof told The Leader. “I am excited to go.”

She added that she was hoping for personal best skates and was happy to achieve her goal, and represent Eastern Ontario at the provincial championships. This is VanHoof’s first time competing at the provincials.

VanHoof started skating at age three in the CanSkate program, and trains in Morrisburg and in Nepean.

Outside of skating, she is a Grade 10 student at Seaway District High School and is active in school athletics. She also plays competitive soccer with the Seaway Kickers club.
VanHoof will be competing against the top figure skaters across the province at the All Ontario STARSkate Provincinal Championships March 17-19th in Port Colborne.
