The 19th Hole

The rain forced the play indoors for the annual Morrisburg Ladies Friendly on Tuesday, June 11.

While the play outdoors had to be cancelled, indoors the 53 participating women played some cards and then enjoyed a wonderful lunch.

“All in all, it turned out to be a nice day,” said Morrisburg ladies captina Monique Patenaude. “We had a chance to talk with ladies we had not seen since last year.”

Twelve golfers were in attendance from Cedar Glen, six from Iroquois, two from Summer Heights, nine from Rideau Glen and 22 from Morrisburg.

Regular Wednesday evening play on June 12 was sponsored by Cook’s Corner Debbie Dennis and saw 53 ladies playing a round.

Prizes were awarded for putting skills with Tabatha Casselman winning with the least at 11. Anne Winters and Barb McWhinnie won for the most putts, their totals not given.

Jennifer Adams dropped her shot closest to the pin on the par three 17th hole, while Shannon Casselman dropped the longest putt on the 18th hole at 25 feet.

There were a few strings attached for the ladies who participated in the weekly ladies night on Wednesday, June 6. In fact there were quite a few strings attached as each golfer was given a length of string to be used to improve their ball position.

The rules of the night allowed that the string would be used anywhere, to remove a ball from a hazard, perhaps a bunker, or out from behind a tree. Why it could even correct an incorrect putt.

Using their strings to their advantage to top the evening were Monique Patenaude with a 38 and Linda Barclay with 39 in A/B flight.

In class B/C, Gisele Hooles won with a 43, and Kitty Moore was just a string away with a 44.

The evening sponsor was the McIntosh Country Inn.

Gord Dillabough shot a 34 to lead the men’s night field last Thursday, June 13. Donnie Mabo won B flight with a 39 while Allan Patterson was the top shooter in C with a 43. Net wins went to Kevin Duvall in A flight, Sam Harwood in B and Bob Youmelle in C.

Dropping their shots closest to the pins were John Hickman on the 14th and Mick Mabo on the 17th.

The evening was sponsored by the Morrisburg Leader.

The weather took its toll on June 6 with just 32 golfers actually getting out to play. The night was sponsored by Jim Whelan/Sun Life Financial.

Top shooters were Lee Beaupre in A flight, Dave McClenagan in B and Bob Youmelle in C. Net winners were Steve Boucher in A, Andy Patenaude in B and Bob Desrosiers in C.

Closest to the pin  winners were Andy Patenaude on the par three fifth hole, and Tom Whelan on the par 3 seventh.

Coming up this Thursday, June 20, the men’s night sponsor is Gary’s Automotive.

Sun shines on Garry Shaver Memorial in support of Easter Seals

In a rare day filled with sunshine, everyone was smiling as the 10 team Garry Shaver Memorial Blooperball tournament went to work, here Saturday, to raise $3,219 for the Dundas County Easter Seals council.

Organized by Barb Hodgson and Troy White with help from their friends, the day featured top notch action which was won by the Barn Muckers.

“We are fortunate to have people like Barb (Hodgson) and Troy (White) who put on events like this for us,” said Deanna MacKillican a member of the Dundas County Easter Seals council. “They really put a lot of work into this.”

MacKillican explained the $3,219 was raised through the tournament registrations, raffles and draws and will be used to assist families who have children registered with the Dundas County Council for Easter Seals.

The annual Garry Shaver Blooperball tournament is the second of three yearly events run by community volunteers in support of local Easter Seals children. Next up is the annual ball hockey organized by Brian and Tracey Shaver in Williamsburg in the fall.

MacKillican explained that numbers are down across the board. “We are down to just the three major fund raising events (the first is the Snowarama in February), we have just four council members on our board and we have probably less than 10 Easter Seals families registered with us.”

She says these are all numbers that the Dundas County Easter Seals Council would like to see increased.

For a number of years, the Council assisted some 16 to 17 registered Easter Seals families and MacKillican is unsure why fewer children are registered.

Easter Seals assists families in a number of ways including financial assistance of up to $3 000 per year, per child to help purchase essential mobility equipment such as wheelchair, walkers, ramps or lifts.

Easter Seals also owns and operates two fully accessible summer camps and offers 10-day summer camp experiences. For children who either don’t want to or are unable to attend Easter Seals camp, financial assistance is available to attend another summer recreational activity of their choosing.

Scholarships for young people with physical disabilities attending post secondary education are also available.

Children/youth up to 19 years of age are eligible for services through Easter Seals.

MacKillican indicated the Council would also welcome some new members. With three of the four living in the Morrisburg area and the fourth from Kemptville, some representation from the north end of Dundas County (the Winchester and Chesterville) areas would be very beneficial.

Brynn Gilmour runs two PBs at OFSAA

B. McNairn-Leader staff

IROQUOIS – Brynn Gilmour hasn’t let her first year of high school slow her down one bit on the track or otherwise. In fact, Gilmour has continued to quicken her pace throughout the current high school track and field season, bringing it to a successful conclusion at OFSAA last week in Oshawa, where she ran two personal best times.

Gilmour who began to train seriously, five years ago as she prepared for her Grade 6 school year at Iroquois Public, competed in both the 400m sprint and 800m at the Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex.

Although she failed to advance out of her heats, she put together personal best times in both events, gaining a good feel for the caliber of the athletes and for the intense excitement of competing at the provincial level.

“Brynn had an excellent year of competition culminating in her qualifying for the All-Ontario Championships,” says her Seaway High School coach Mark Lewis. “She worked hard all year and committed herself to achieving her goals.”

“She wanted to run under 60 seconds in the 400m dash, and was close to attaining this goal. She ended up running at 61.56 which was still a personal best (PB) by more than three seconds.”

In the 800m, the goal was 2:20 and she achieved it running in 2:20.92, which was a PB, a full nine seconds better than her time when she started the season.

“She barely missed qualifying for the final at OFSAA in the 800 and ended up with the ninth fastest time, actually running faster than one of the athletes who made the final,” says Lewis.

“She had a great year and was a joy to coach. She always worked hard and did everything we asked her to do, even if she didn’t feel confident doing it. Lindsay Waddell and Robyn Carriere and I were extremely proud of her accomplishments.”

For Brynn, her many races have been rewarding since her first season in grade 6. She credits her grandfather, Wayne Barkley, for peaking her interest.

“My grandfather took me everywhere. He got me started running around the neighbourhood.”

Throughout her elementary school career, she set numerous track records and consistently scored the honour of top girl at the annual Tournament of Champions.

In addition to her two days per week of high school training, Brynn trains three days a week in Brockville under coach Bob Tucker, who is with the Brockville Legion program. She runs one day per week on the weekend and takes one day off …the day off dependent upon her homework.

Lewis and Tucker coordinated her program at the start of the high school season, and according to Brynn it has “worked out fine. I work on distance with Bob and speed with Mr. Lewis. I am actually the luckiest athlete out there, as I have two really great coaches who are always there.”

A typical training session for Brynn runs 1.5 hours and includes arm and leg strengthening exercises. Training is year round, and, “yes” she says to everyone, “I run in the winter.”

For her mom and dad,  Dale  and Carrie Gilmour, it has been an interesting and, at times, nerve wracking experience. “When she was little she was always quick and always had endurance, so that’s why we began to think maybe she could look at it more seriously,” says Carrie. “It’s a huge commitment. She runs year round through snow and sleet. We didn’t realize there was so much science behind it all.”

Brynn began her first high school season with firsts in both of her events at the SD&G, despite the fact she was battling a flu bug. She ran the 400m in 1:05 which she says, “was not good” and the 800 in 2:33.

At a very windy EOSSAA she won the 400m with a time of 62 seconds and placed second in the 800 with a time of 2:27.

Then it was off to the East Regions meet where a personal best time of 2:22 gave her a second place finish in the 800 and a personal best time of 61 seconds put her in third spot in the 400.

The finishes allowed her to qualify for the All-Ontario.

Interviewed last Thursday before she left for OFSAA with her mom and coach Lewis, Brynn says she wasn’t nervous “yet”.

“I’ve had a pretty good season. I would like to be under 60 seconds in the 400, and I would like to run the 800 in 2:20 or under. Judging from my current times, they both seem attainable.”

Having now entered the high school level of competition, Brynn notes that “it’s a huge difference. The talent pool has opened up quite a bit. A lot of people who ran before drop it at the high school level.”

While you may not cross the finish line ahead of your competitors every time, every time you meet or surpass your personal goals at the finish line is a time to celebrate.

Those personal wins, and the experience of competing at a level that many just dream of, is what Brynn brought home with her from Oshawa.

Seaway Kickers off to a good start, two wins in Ottawa

IROQUOIS-The Seaway Kickers U13 Mixed team began the 2013 season on June 6th against the Ottawa Internationals. The rain-soaked game at the fields at Bruff Park in Gloucester, saw the return of many players from last year’s squad.

This year’s team has 19 players, coached by Frank Waytowich and Sid Markell.

Seaway controlled the ball for a majority of the first half keeping the ball in Ottawa’s end. The Internationals scored first on a penalty kick at the 27 minute mark of the first half, to go up 1-0.

Seaway out shot Ottawa, 10-3 for the half.

More pressure was applied by the Kickers, who dominated ball possession throughout the second half as the rain intensified.

At the 47 minute mark, Connor Dumoulin scored on a shot set up by Johnny Coligan, low to the left corner of the net to tie the game 1-1.

Coligan collected his second assist of the night, setting up Brayden Blacquiere-Rizk’s off-the-body shot into the Ottawa net, to make it 2-1 Seaway.

Ottawa struggled to tie the game, however, Seaway’s defense kept the ball out of their own end with only two attempts at Seaway’s net being made.

Seaway applied pressure late in the second half attempting four shots in less than two minutes, but the clock ran out.

Final score: Seaway Kickers 2, Ottawa Internationals 1.

Seaway out shot Ottawa 18-5. Shawn Dowson and Travis McInnis shared goalkeeping duties.

The U13M Kickers visit Nepean City in Ottawa, June 13, followed by a three game tournament on the weekend in Ottawa.

Rain Couldn’t Put Out These Cigars

The weather may have been cold, but the baseball action was definitely hot when the 10th annual Casey at the Bat fast ball tournament took place at the Williamsburg diamonds, May 24-26.

Friday night, under grey skies, the tournament opened with two special presentations.

On behalf of the Fast Ball Tournament, Lyle Schell presented Lisa Casselman, of the Dundas County Hospice, with a cheque for $1,200, the proceeds from the 2012 tournament.

“With this cheque, we have now gone over the $10,000 mark in donations since the first Casey at the Bat 10 years ago,” Schell said. “We have made donations ranging from the cancer society to high school bursaries to the hospice.” Proceeds from the 2013 tournament, still being tabulated at press time, will be going to the Dundas County Hospice.

Then long time ball player and fan, Bert “Knappy” McIntosh, stepped up to the mound. Displaying the same form he must have had when he played ball with tournament namesake, Casey Schell in the 30s and 40s, Bert made the ceremonial toss.

The tournament hosted 10 teams this year. Eastmain, a Northern Quebec team, travelled 16 hours to take part in the event. Also entered in competition were the home team, the Williamsburg Cigars, Donnacona. Quebec, the Quebec Jrs,, the Napanee Jrs., the Ottawa Blitz, the Barrhaven Blues, the Domville Jrs., the Lyn Seniors and a team from Cornwall.

The home town Cigars gave ball fans plenty to cheer about all weekend long, despite the very unseasonable cold weather, and the constant threat of rain showers.

In their 6:30 p.m. opener against Domville, the Cigars swept the decks with a score of 5-0. They repeated the magic with a score of 9-0 over the Eastmain team on Saturday.

Saturday afternoon, the Cigars played an exciting game against the Ottawa Blitz, highlighted by a home run from Matt Alkerton, and some strong pitching by Corey Alkerton. Williamsburg took the win 7-1.

On Sunday morning, the Cigars faced Lyn, and fought to a tough 7-7 tie.

The tournament was set up with two divisions of five teams each, round robin format. There were three games on Friday night, with 12 games scheduled on two playing fields on Saturday and eight games Sunday. The semi-finals and the finals took place on Sunday, late day.

Sunday afternoon, the Cigars, who placed first in the Casey Division, followed by the Blitz in second spot, took on the 2nd place finisher in the Sib Division, Donnacona. (Napanee was in first place in the Sib).

It was a hard fought contest against the strong, and scrappy Quebec team (they hit four bombs): unfortunately, the Cigars went down to a 8-1 defeat. This eliminated them from the final games of the tournament.

“We had a great team,” Schell said. “The guys all played their best.”

The final and deciding match was played between Donnacona and Napanee, and was won by Donnacona 11-2, with the Quebec team belting out four more home runs.

Donnacona is the team that eliminated the Cigars in the 2012 tournament. “I’m seriously thinking that maybe I won’t invite them next year,” Lyle Schell remarked, grinning.

Top pitcher honours went to Gregg Garrity of Donnacona, as did the top hitter nod to Mathieu Roy.

Napanee player John Hass was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
