Four tie, Coughlin wins Men’s Open in playoff

After the 62 competing players completed regulation play for the annual Morrisburg Golf Club’s Men’s Open on Saturday, June 21, a foursome found themselves heading back to the ninth tee.

The foursome consisted of Morrisburg Golf Club members Randy Casselman, Bob Mann and Matt O’Neil along with Lombard Glen golfer Travis Coughlin all of whom finished the 18 holes of play tied for low gross with 76’s to force a playoff.

After the first hole of sudden death play, Casselman and Mann put away their clubs with bogey fives. Coughlin stayed alive by dropping a 12 foot putt for a par, and O’Neil went down for a four with two putts.

Second time around, the momentum swung to Coughlin when O’Neil put his drive out of bounds on the par four, dog leg left, 305-yard ninth hole. Coughlin played safe for his par to claim the 2014 Men’s Open championship.

Coughlin played a steady game throughout the 18 holes. He turned the corner with a 38 and brought it home with a matching 38. After nine holes, O’Neil was one stroke back with a 39 to which he added a two over par 37.

Bob Mann’s 76 gave him the low net win in A flight with a 66 net score.

Following the 76s to a fabulous Open prize table was a 77 shot by Prescott golfer Tony Gilson and a pair of 78s shot by Rob Kimberly of Prescott and Paul Nooyen of Ottawa Hylands.

The final A flight golfer to break 80 was 2013 defending champ Lance LePage with a 79. LePage won the tournament in 2013 with a 73.

Leading the way in B flight was Lee Beaupre who won the flight with a 77, two strokes better than defending B champ Dave McClenaghan with his 79 total. The 79 gave McClenaghan the B net win with a 66 net score. Both are Morrisburg club golfers.

B flight was a strong Morrisburg affair with the next four winners all from the host club.

Donnie Mabo and Mike Laurin finished tieds with 81’s and Shawn Hummell shot an 84. Larry Gallinger tied Upper Canada’s Jim Beckstead with an 85.

The C flight win went to Will Mann of the Kingston area with an 87.

Junior Golf Camp set to tee off in Iroquois

If you are a junior golfer or maybe just a junior looking to be a golfer, then you should get in touch with Chris Veltkamp to set you up with a game.

Veltkamp, a former CPGA Professional and a teacher at St. Mary-St. Cecilia School in Morrisburg, is working with the Iroquois Golf Club and setting up a week-long Junior Golf Camp that will run from Monday, July 14 through Friday, July 18. In addition, he has organized a Play Junior Golf Tour with stops at five area golf courses.

Veltkamp explains that the idea of the Golf Camp at the Iroquois Golf Club came about as a result of a noticeable decline of junior golfers.

“I have been speaking with management at Iroquois, and they have seen a decline in their junior golfers. So they would like to grow it, and we are hoping a week-long golf camp will get some interest going.”

For the past six years,Veltkamp has been running junior golf camps at the 18-hole executive par 3 Sunnidell course in Brockville, where he says he has had a lot of success.

He designs his camps to be fun and exciting and has developed them from the CN Future Links (Canada’s Leading Junior Golf Development Program) and information from the Titleist Performance Institute TPI (the world’s leading educational organization and research facility that studies the human body in relation to the golf swing.)

Veltkamp explains that TPI stresses the building of a complete athlete, and he incorporates into his camps, activities that will help develop a youngster’s coordination, agility, balance, flexibility and core strength, just to name a few.

Things like skipping, throwing a ball, kicking a ball, Frisbee throwing, playing on monkey bars, racing others…are some of the recommended TPI activities.

“Each day of the camp, we focus on a specific component for about 45 minutes. We ask golfers to finish the swing on their front foot, when some people can’t even balance on one foot. So we play fun little games to achieve this that I have incorporated. It’s not rocket science. You build an athlete first, and they will pick up the finer points of golf as they go along. You can watch any golf tournament today, and you will see that the men and women are in phenomenal shape.”

Veltkamp says he aims at keeping the camps fun and he moves the participants along from one activity to another. These activities might include other sports such as ball or maybe a little soccer. A lot of athletic movements are developed in these sports.”

Each day of the clinic includes work at the range and each afternoon includes time on the course for a game.

Veltkamp advises parents that golf is an absolutely wonderful game to involve their kids in. It is a game that will last a lifetime and teaches great values.

“One of the neat things about golf is it’s a game you will never beat,” he says. “Every day is a new challenge. You can be having a bad round and then on the second last hole of the day, get a hole in one. All you have to do is hit a couple of really good shots and you will be back because there is always a chance you are going to be one shot better the next time.”

“Kids can play just for fun, they can play to be with their friends, they can play to be outdoors, they can play for exercise, they can play to be competitive, and they can play for school scholarships. There are a lot of opportunities in golf.”

“Look at Brooke Henderson from Smiths Falls. She is 16 years old, comes from a small town and look where she is today.”

The five day Iroquois Junior Golf Camp will run from Monday, July 14-Friday July 18, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. It is limited to 30 golfers, ages 7-13 from throughout the area. The cost is $200 and each participant will receive over 30 hours of instruction daily play each afternoon, a camp gift, a complimentary 18 hole green fee and the opportunity to purchase a mini-membership with the Iroquois Golf Club for July/August.

EOSSAA gold for Seaway’s Brynn Gilmour

Junior runner, Brynn Gilmour led Seaway District High School at the EOSSAA Track and Field championship hosted by TISS here on Friday, May 23 with a gold medal run in the 400m and second place finishes in the 200m and 800m races.

Collecting the only other medal for Seaway was field athlete Kaitlyn Stewart with a second place 9.91m jump in the midget girls triple jump.

The two, along with midget athletes Maggie Wells and Cassie Hummel, will compete at the East Regional Meet at the Terry Fox Facility in Ottawa, this Thursday and Friday, May 29-30.

Wells qualified in shot put with a fourth place, 8.66m throw and discus with a 25.93m fifth place throw, while Hummel qualified in javelin with a 24.59m fifth place throw.

Gilmour had a very solid day on the track. After winning the fastest qualifying heat in the 400, she claimed gold with a time of 1:01.59. (She got to EOSSAA in the 400m with a gold medal win at the SD&G in Cornwall two weeks ago with a time of 1:04.83.)

She claimed a silver EOSSAA medal in the 200m with a time of 27.20 behind the winner, Teri-Anna Libby of TISS who crossed the finish line at 26.84 seconds.

Gilmour claimed her second silver medal in the 800m with a time of 2:28.65. The win went to B. MacDougall of Kingston at 2:28.47.

“Brynn ran well and hopefully still has some improvement left,” says Mark Lewis, who with Trevor Thompson is co-coaching Seaway’s track and field team. “She hasn’t run as fast as she can yet, so we will see.”

Lewis explained that Gilmour, a very successful distance runner, “moved to the 200 to work on and improve her speed. That will be determined this week at Regional as the competition gets a lot stiffer.”

Kaitlyn Stewart improved on her 9.31m triple jump which won her a gold medal at SD&G with Friday’s EOSSAA jump of 9.91m.

“Kaitlyn had a very good jump, but I feel there is more left in the tank as well,” says Lewis. “We are hoping to peak with all of the girls this week to get some of them to OFSAA.”

“Maggie [Wells] and Cassie [Hummel] are both rookies and just learning their respective events. We have been working on a lot of technique the last few weeks, and we are starting to see some improvement. I think they will throw even better this week.”

Wells won gold medals at the SD&G with an 8.78m throw in shot put and a 25.91m throw in discus. She was third in javelin with an 18.80 throw.

While she came up just short of the two SD&G medal throws at EOSSAA, she vastly improved in javelin at 21.23m for a non-qualifying eighth place finish.

Hummel won the midget girls javelin at the SD&G with a 23.08m throw and was fifth at EOSSAA  with a pb throw of 24.59m. She struggled at shot put with a 7.14m throw and did not qualify in the event. She threw 7.45m for a fourth place finish at SD&G.

Coaches Thompson and Lewis are happy with this year’s team with 15 athletes competing at the SD&G and 12 of them qualifying for EOSSAA.

In addition to the four mentioned, they included Izzy Burrell (triple jump), Kyle Ault (2nd SD&G midget 400m), Johnny Strackholder (3rd SD&G midget triple jump), Quinn Horne (4th SD&G 80m hurdles, 5th 100m), Kyle Ault (2nd SDG midget 400m), Keanne Van Dodewaard (4th SD&G midget 400m), Emily Hector (4th SD&G junior 100m, 5th long jump) and Ashley Whitteker (80m junior hurdles).
