Win number two was against the Perrot Riverains, 6-0, and their third round robin win was against the SouthhEnd Inferno C2s, 3-0.

Their unblemished record put them in the final for a rematch with the Riverains, and they kept their pace with Jansen registering his fourth consecutive shutout in the 5-0 championship win.

The Lions got off to a slow start against the Riverains in the championship final, and it was six minutes into the second period before Collin VanHoof put them on the scoreboard with help from Nathen Verhey. Provincial gold medal for Alexis Engwerda

For the figure skater, timing is so very important and on Saturday, at the Skate Ontario Championship here, Alexis Engwerda’s timing was perfect as she skated to the senior bronze ladies gold medal win.

The Morrisburg Figure Skate Club member who has been skating since she was three years old, put together her very best skate ever to finish in first place ahead of the other 17 skaters in the Senior Bronze category. She chalked up a personal best score of 26.52, well up from her previous pb of 23.53 which she skated at EOSIC in February for a second place finish and the right to represent Eastern Ontario at the Ontario championship.

“The pressure was qualifying for this competition and placing at EOSIC, therefore we were just going to enjoy the experience and honour of attending the all-Ontario event, have fun and skate the best we could,” said coach Allison Scott. “Alexis rose to the challenge and had an amazing clean skate.”

“As far as I know we have never had anyone win at this level,” said Morrisburg Club president Julie Van Hoof. “We are a small club from a small town and this is a big accomplishment. Alexis has had a very good year and she should be very proud of her accomplishments.”

And indeed Engwerda is delighted with her win. “I wasn’t expecting to get that big a mark. I’m excited because it was my personal best.”

The grade 10 students at North Dundas District High School says she wasn’t nervous going into the competition. “My warm up was good, and my skate just kind of flowed. I just went after one element at a time.”

Engwerda’s program consists of a spiral sequence, three spins and six jump elements, five being double jumps. The jumps include a double/double combination.

For the Skate Ontario competition a second double flip replaced a double Salchow.

“More points are awarded for the flip and it has become a very consistent jump for Alexis,” explained Scott of the change.

“Alexis skated effortlessly with her warm smile,” said Scott. “She precisely linked all of the elements with her intricate footwork and artistry flair and she attacked every element with focus and determination. She had a beautiful combination spin, a strong double salchow/double toe-loop combination and a gorgeous double flip in combination.

“When they announced her score we were ecstatic and absolutely thrilled that she had improved by three points since EOSIC. It was an outstanding accomplishment. She had achieved her goals and we were please with how well she had performed.”

Engwerda was the sixth skater on the ice in the 18 skater senior bronze category and after her skate, and her score put her in front of the previous five skaters and she and Scott settled back to watch and enjoying the remaining skaters.

It was only as each of the remaining 12 skaters finished their programs and Alexis score continued to be the one to beat, that the realization slowly began to sink in.

“It became very emotional once we realized she had won,” says Scott. “It was truly exhilarating to hear her name announced as Skate Ontario Senior Bronze Champion! Words cannot express how impressed and proud I am  of Alexis. She is a hard-working and determined skaters and such a charming sweet girl who is absolute pleasure to coach.”

With the Skate Ontario Gold medal now in a place of honour with her many skate awards, Alexis is now turning her attention towards the upcoming ice show to be performed with her fellow Morrisburg Skate Club skaters at the end of March.

She has just recently successfully completed her testing and will move up to the Junior Silver level which will add 30 seconds to her program. She has one final competition at the Senior Bronze level in April in Gloucester.

After winning their South East Division against the South Grenville #2 Rangers in two straight games, the South Dundas Midget B House Lions, were stopped by the Alexandria Glens in their pursuit of the East Division Championship and the right to advance to the UCMHL championship final.

The Lions played four games of hockey in five days.

In the first two days, Thursday, March 5 and Friday, March 6, they put together 3-2 and 3-1 victories over the Rangers  to win their South East Division Championship.

They saw action against the Glens on Sunday, March 8 in Alexandria, (4-2 loss) and on home ice Monday night, March 9 (7-3 loss) for the Eastern  Championship.

The Glens came out solid in the series opener on Sunday. They went up 2-0 in the first period on goals by Nick Hansen and Nathan Currier.

Alexander McMaster made it 3-0, Glens in the second period.

The Lions got one back early in the third from Kody Arsenault, assisted by Noah Picotte and Jonathan Mayhew, but a Jordan Dunny goal again stretched it out for the Glens with 7:16 left in the game.

The Lions counted their final goal with just over two minutes left, from Trevor Nicolaassen assisted by Ewen Baril in the 4-2 Glens win.

The Lions needed a win to stay alive in game two of the four point series Monday night on home ice, and they hung tough through the first two periods.

The Lions were first on the scoreboard with an unassisted Picotte goal, and they held on until the final minute of the frame.

In that final minute, Brandon Lavern and Nick Leroux both counted to give the Glens a 2-1 edge heading into the second period.

The Glens stretched their lead to 4-1 early in the second, but the Lions charged back in the last two minutes with a pair of goals from Trevor Nicolaassen to keep it close at 4-3.

Just over 3:13 into the third period the Glens’ Laverne counted to make it 5-3. He added two more as the Glens skated to the 7-3 victory and the East championship series win.

The Lions claimed their Division (southeast) championship in two straight games against the South Grenville #2 Rangers.

The series kicked off Thursday, March 5 in Cardinal, with a 3-2 Lions win.

Tyler Nelson had a big night, scoring all three of the Lions goals while Logan Hummel provided an assist on each. Trevor Nicolaassen helped out on goal number one and Cassie Hummel earned an assist on the second.

After a scoreless first period, Nelson put the Lions up 2-0 in the second period

The Rangers charged back in the third to tie it 2-2, with goals from Austin Mott and Zach Illingworth.

That set the stage for the winner from Nelson with 1:39 left in the game.

Game two was played in Morrisburg on Friday night, with the Lions claiming a 3-2 win to wrap up the series.

Again it was a scoreless first period.

Austin Mott got the lone Rangers goal midway into the second period, but his effort was quickly cancelled by a Logan Hummel goal assisted by Nicolaassen and Nelson.

Action settled down and it wasn’t until the final five minutes of the game that the Lions were able to break away from the 1-1 tie.

Atom B House Lions lose semi-final series to Rebels

The South Dundas Atom B House Lions’ bid for the UCMHL playoff crown came to an end in game three of their four point series against the Char-Lan Rebels on Morrisburg ice, Tuesday, March 3 with a 3-2 loss.

The semi-final series kicked off in Morrisburg, on Saturday, February 28 with a 4-2 win by the Rebels.

The series travelled to Char-Lan for game two, where the Lions put it together with a 6-1 win and push the series to the third game back home in Morrisburg.

“Usually the odds are in your favour when you score the first goal, but it turned out to be a curse in this series,” said coach Brian Shaver. “The team who scored first in each of the three games ended up losing that game.”

“We carried the momentum from game two (6-1 win), and got off to a good start in game three,” said Shaver.

Dryden Buter opened the scoring at 6:15 of the first from Cam Shaver and Jack McCann.  That’s the way things would stay until 5:09 of the second when Monty Dejong put the Lions up by two, assisted by Spencer Barclay.

Then things took a turn for the worse when the Lions got themselves into some penalty trouble.

The Rebels’ Riley Tessier cashed in on the power play with 2:39 left in the period, assisted by Harry Rozon and Avery Teodoro, to pull within one.

The Lions spent the last minute of the second and the first minute of the third killing off another Rebels power play.

The Rebels used the momentum built up from the power play to tie the game 2-2 early in the third period  and it remained tied despite both teams trading power-play opportunities.

Then with just 1:06 remaining the Rebels Tessier broke in on a breakaway and made a perfect shot upstairs to give the Rebels their first lead of the game, 3-2.

With goalie Quade Mullin pulled for an extra attacker in the dying minute, the Lions threw everything they had left at Rebels goaltender Michael Chaput.  The frantic action included a post from Shaver, and a goal line stop on Sean Nicolaassen.

The Rebels got their final goal into the empty Lions net.

Despite the disappointment of losing the series, the Lions are proud of their accomplishments this year.  This includes a first place East Division regular season finish, being the second highest scoring team in the league, and winning the Perth tournament.

The Lions are now looking forward to ending the year on a positive note at the Kids for Kids tourney in Kingston at the end of the month!

Peewee Bs bidding for UCMHL crown

The South Dundas Lions are heading into game one of the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League’s Peewee B House championship final tonight, Wednesday, March 11, in Morrisburg against the Brockville Braves. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Lions eliminated the Alexandria Glens in two straight games on the weekend. They opened the series on home ice on Saturday with a hard-fought, well deserved 3-2 win and then took their game to Alexandria, on Sunday where they turned it up a notch for a 5-1 victory to win the Peewee B House East Division Championship four points to zero.

The win puts them in the UCMHL Championship final against the Braves who tackled and defeated the South Grenville Rangers in two games straight for the West Division Championship.

“We battled Alexandria all year long for first place and beat them on the last day of the regular season to clinch the East Division Title,” said Lions coach Jason Broad following the Lions East Division playoff championship win on Sunday. “I thought if we met them in the playoffs, it would be a tough series.”

“Saturday’s game (3-2 Lions win) was one of the best played games of the whole season. Both teams played very well and the game was highlighted by goaltenders.”

The strong goaltending, Brendan Shaver and Michaela Mustard for the Lions and Alexandre Duval, kept the scorers at bay throughout the first and second periods. All of the scoring occurred in the (18 minute) third period, in a seesaw battle that saw first the Lions score and then the Glens reply.

The winning goal, scored by Jaeden Phifer-Shaver and assisted by Nolan Henry and Ben Lapier with 2:45 left in the game, was the result of a great passing play between the three.

The scoring started early in the third period with Jack Connors the first to meet with success for the Lions with help from Kolby Latullippe.

Connors goal at 1:51 of the third, was followed at 2:28 by the Glen Maxime Pilon to keep the game even at 1-1.

End to end action and some great goaltender saves were featured until 11:22 when Ben Lapier counted the Lions second goal with help from Henry and Owen Fetterly.

Again the Lions lead didn’t last long. The Glens charged back with Andrew MacMaster counting at 14:14 to tie it 2-2.

That set the stage for the Phifer-Shaver winner at 15:15 of the third period.

The series resumed in Alexandria on Sunday, and the Lions turned it up a notch to post a 5-1 victory and sweep the four-point championship series.

“In game two in Alexandria we played even better,” said Broad. “We continued to pressure them offensively, and we broke out with the five goals clinching the series.”

“I’m very proud of the effort we’ve put in, not only in game but in our practices. We continue to focus on the skills of the games as opposed to tactics, and we can see it paying off now.”

In Alexandria, the Lions led 1-0 after the first period on a Jaeden Phifer-Shaver goal assisted by Nolan Henry and Kieran Geurkink.

Henry made it 2-0 Lions, 4:34 into the second period with Phifer-Shaver and Trent Rae assisting, and Phifer-Shaver counted goal number three at 11:39 of the second period with help from Ben Lapier and Jayden Rowe.

The Glens got on the board with a Joseph Robertson goal less than one minute into the third period, but that was it.

The Lions got two more from Lapier (assisted by Phifer-Shaver and Henry) and from Phifer-Shaver (assisted by Henry and Lapier) for the 5-1, East Division Championship win.

After a first round bye, for their first place regular season division finish, the Lions eliminated South Stormont in East Division semi-final playoff action with 8-1 and 4-1 wins.

The five point UCMHL championship series opens tonight, Wednesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. in Morrisburg. Games two and three, according to early information provided, are scheduled to be played immediately following March break, on Monday, March 23 and Tuesday, March 24. Both are scheduled for Brockville, with times yet to be announced. Game four, if necessary, would be back in Morrisburg on Wednesday, March 25 at 7 p.m.

Big Four Win for Morrisburg Little Rocks

It’s been 16 years since a Morrisburg Little Rocks team had their names etched on the Big Four Trophy, and it ended here on Saturday, February 28.

There was absolutely no question that the 16-year drought was going to end late Saturday afternoon, when not just one but two Morrisburg Little Rock foursomes worked their way into the championship final with undefeated records.

The Big Four is a four-club bonspiel with each of the four clubs from Metcalfe, Russell, Winchester and Morrisburg, putting two teams on the ice and each hosting the event on a rotating basis from year to year.

The action for the 2015 final was exciting as the two Morrisburg teams went to work for the championship. In the end, it went to skips rocks and the team of Ewan Wilson, Nolan Belanger, Josh Broad and J.J. Charette won the championship.

“It was an awesome experience to have both Morrisburg teams in the finals,” says Little Rocks program coordinator Ian Wilson.  “This is the first time in this century Morrisburg has won this event.”

The runner-ups were Jody Robinson, Kyra Lewis, Rhiannon Beckstead and Alexis Grenkie.

The championship final started off with the first end being blanked. The Wilson rink then took two in the second.

Robinson got one back in the third and stole the fourth end for one (she had a chance to win it). That sent it to skips rock for the decision.

“We were going to let it stay tied, but the kids said no, they wanted to finish it,” says Ian Wilson explaining that six end games were played in the preliminary games and the final was a four-ender.

The Wilson rink defeated Metcalfe 8-1 and Winchester 6-1 to get to the final.

The Robinson rink defeated Russell 5-3 and Metcalfe 5-1 to earn their spot in the final.

“It was a pretty exciting day,” says Ian Wilson. “It’s is great for our program to see these kids curling so well.”

Alexis, Trina off to Skate Ontario final

Two Morrisburg club skaters will be lacing up their skates for the Skate Ontario Championship coming up in Brampton, March 13-15.

Senior Bronze skater Alexis Engwerda and Juvenile (under 14) skater Trina Dykstra-MacPherson, put together strong performances at the Eastern Ontario StarSkate Invitational Championships (EOSIC) held at the Nepean Sportsplex, February 13-15, to land their qualifying spots. Engwerda skated to a podium silver medal finish in her division while Dyskstra-MacPherson placed fourth.

“Alexis had a great skate to her spirited Celtic music from the ‘Lord of the Dance” that won her a bronze medal in her flight, and qualified her for the final,” says her coach Allison Scott.

“Not everything was clean, but I tried everything and I was happy about that,” says Engwerda whose program is ambitious and energetic and consists of three spins (camel-sit-change, sit combination, deathdrop and sit-change-sit) and six jump elements, five of them double jumps, including two double-double combinations, and a spiral sequence. “I had a personal best with 23.53 points, and that beat my previous best by two points.”

“Alexis skated with great flow and finesse attacking each element with a smile,” said Scott. “She had a fabulous combination spin, an effortless double flip jump, and she achieved a personal best score and a spot in the final.”

“However, her performance in the final was even better than her first skate!  She rose to the occasion, skated aggressively but assertively into each element, had solid and complete rotations in both her double-double jump combinations and beautiful spins including a quality death-drop spin which all resulted in her surpassing her previous score and achieving another personal best!”

“Her silver medal win and a chance to skate at the All-Ontario Championships in Brampton, is an honour which is so incredibly exciting!”

“Alexis has improved tremendously this season.  Her her hard work, determination and dedication has paid off, and I am extremely proud of her outstanding accomplishment for this event.”

“I am just so happy for her and look forward to our experience together at the All-Ontario!

Trina had a nearly flawless personal best performance at EOSIC in the Juvenile under 14 category to earn her a qualifying position for the Skate Ontario Championships in March.

“It was one of my better skates,” says Trina. “I did a personal best 28.79 from my previous 22.02. That was a really big jump, and I was really happy.”

“Trina completed a jam-packed 2.5 minute program including an axel and eight doubles (2 double-double combinations, an axel-double loop with three other doubles by themselves),” says coach Louise Dimmick. “She also performed three excellent spins, two change-foot combination spins (one with a flying entry), a flying camel spin and a beautiful spiral sequence that really highlighted her flexibility.”

“Trina’s speed and artistry have really improved over the last six months, and you could see Trina’s love of skating come out in her performance.”

“This success is the result of years of hard work and it’s been so nice to be a part of this journey with her.”

Good marks for Morrisburg skaters at EOSIC

wo of 11 skaters representing The Morrisburg Figure Skate Club at the 2015 Eastern Ontario StarSkate Invitational Championships (EOSIC) earned the right to advance to the Skate Ontario Championships, in Brampton, March 13-15.

Alexis Engwerda and Trina Dykstra-MacPherson put together some fine skates at EOSIC, February 13-15 at the Nepean Sportsplex and both are working hard on their programs for the upcoming All-Ontario.

In addition to the second place podium finish for Engwerda and Dykstra-MacPherson’s fourth place,  the other nine Morrisburg Club skaters had some good personal results and skated away from EOSIC with valuable experience.

“It was great to have 11 skaters represent MDSC at EOSIC this year,” said Morrisburg club president Julie Van Hoof.  “All our skaters skated their best, and the club is very proud of all of them for the hard work and dedication that goes into their skating.”

“Our coaches are very supportive of each of their skaters and help them work through the nerves which is often common at a competition this big!”

“MDSC is very proud to have two of our skaters representing Eastern Ontario at the All Ontario’s in March.”

Following is a list of the EOSIC skaters with comments from their coaches.

Abigail Jordan: 13th, Star 5 (over 13 category) – Coach Allison Scott

Abigail skated with great effort and poise throughout her program, to her captivating music “Seniorita” composed by Bond.

Abigail’s program consisted of two spins (a camel-sit-change sit combination and a flying camel), six jump elements, two of which were axels and one double jump, and a spiral sequence.  She completed the axels, was rewarded points for complete rotation on her double jump, and skated fluently and persistently focusing on one element at a time.

Alisha VanHoof: 9th, Ladies Gold–Coach Louise Dimmick

For Ali’s last year competing at EOSIC before going away to school, she chose to skate to selections from the movie Love Actually. This has been a favourite selection of music for her and fittingly her program is elegant and expresses her love of skating.

After over 10 years of working with Ali, it’s been a pleasure to see her grow through the levels, challenges and successes.

She opened her program at EOSIC with a beautiful combination spin followed by a great double flip double loop jump combination. Her program was filled with double jumps, spins, and difficult footwork and transitions. An especially nice highlight was her impressive death drop sit spin.

Cameryn Broad: 6th, Star 5 Ladies-Coach Danielle Napier

Cameryn had personal goals set going into EOSIC (to land her double Salchow for the first time in competition, get full marks for a three position combination spin and skate as clean as possible). She met and exceeded her personal goals. Not only did she land one double in her program, but she landed two doubles for the first time in competition.  Cameryn received full points for her combination spin. She skated well with only a few minor areas for deductions and finished with a personal best score of 15.76.

Erika Jordan: 1st Star 4 (under 13)-Coach Allison Scott

Erika had an awesome program and she completed a clean skate. She completed all eight elements, which included two spins (a camel-sit spin combination and backspin), five jump elements, (two of which were axels the most difficult jump in her program) and a spiral sequence. Erika skated to the dynamic and lively music “Libertango’ composed by Bond with great speed and attack, had good height in her jumps and quality rotations and positions in her spins.

She achieved gold status in five of eight elements and three silver, for first overall!  An amazing EOSIC accomplishment!

Gracie Fairbairn: Star 2 Ladies-Coach Danielle Napier

Gracie skated at her first EOSIC at the Star 2 Ladies level in which she received a bronze marking. Gracie skated very well. She landed the five jumps in her program and completed two spins. Her highest jump is a flip, which she landed very nicely and received a silver marking on. Overall, Gracie was very pleased with her performance.

Katie Buter: Junior Bronze Coach Veronica Whyte

Katie moved up to the Junior Bronze level for the first time and had a good skate at her first EOSIC.  Skating to a beautiful piece by Yani, Katie attempted a double salchow for the first time at EOSIC which is a great milestone. Katie grows as a skater at each competition.

Kristyn VanHoof: Sr. Bronze,

8th-Coach Danielle Napier.

Kristyn met the goal she set for her qualifying event which was to place top four in her flight to advance to the final group.

Kristyn had a strong qualifying event and for the first time in competition landed her double flip. Her program is very demanding with two double/double combinations, an axel combination, three spins and three double jumps.

She finished the qualifying program flight in first place with 22.05 points to advance to the final where she had a strong skate but lost marks on her flying spin.  She finished in eighth place with a total of 21.20 points.

Mikaela Furo: Star 3, silver Coach Veronica Whyte

This was Mikaela’s second time to skate at EOSIC, this year skating at the Star 3 level. Mikaela had a good skate and received her silver status. During her performance, Mikaela showed how much her spins have improved.

Xandra Furo: Star 3, silver Coach Veronica Whyte

Xandra had a good skate for her second experience at EOSIC to receive her silver status. It was an exciting event for Xandra who showed how much power and flow she has in and out of her jumps.
