A resident of Morrisburg for the past 35 years, Elie Cholette passed away at the Brockville General Hospital on Saturday, July 21, 2012. He was 85.

Elie was born in Lancaster, on March 20, 1927, to his parents Elie and Lydia Cholette (nee Sauve). He lived his entire life in the area.  

Elie worked for many years at Universal Terminals before retiring in 1992.  He was a devoted husband and father. His hobbies included fishing and carpentry work, and he liked to watch hockey and wrestling on television. 

Elie is survived by his wife Brenda Cholette (nee Sloan) and his children Laura-Lee Cholette (Corey Albert) of Ingleside, Dora Courrier (Maurice) of R.R.# 2 Ingleside, Lise Chaplin (Ken) of London and Denise Charrette (Jean-Guy) of St. Luke, P.Q.

Elie was dear brother of  Desnieges Carriere (Omer) of Cornwall and Germaine Fontaine (Phillip) of Hammonton, New Jersey.  He will be fondly remembered by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by two infant brothers, a sister Doris Bertrand and brothers Simon and Viateur Cholette.     

There was no visitation at the funeral home.  A memorial service will be held at St. Lawrence Valley Union Cemetery, Long Sault, on Monday, July 30th at 1 p.m. Donations to the #2 East Unit at Brockville General Hospital would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

A lifetime resident of the Williamsburg area, Graham Garlough passed away at Kingston General Hospital on Thursday, July 19, 2012. He was 87.

Graham was born in Williamsburg Township on January 13, 1925, to his parents Henry and Ruby Garlough (nee Merkley).

Graham spent most of his life doing what he enjoyed most – working.  

As a young lad he started out as a wheelchair boy for Dr. Locke.  He then went on to farming and caring for race horses for Dr. Locke’s son Parker. 

Graham then entered the business world in the egg grading business with Raymond McIntosh and Bert McIntosh under the name of Williamsburg Egg Grading Station – after fire destroyed the business they moved to Glen Becker still in partnership with Bert and a new partner Willard Steinberg. Graham also had a joint ownership in hen houses.

After his retirement from the business, Graham went to work for Cornwall Gravel – where he operated heavy construction equipment, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He then retired from there and went to work for Schneider’s at Parmalat Cheese. 

When he decided to retire from there – Graham still was not content to just sit, so he spent spring and fall helping to work the fields at his two nephews’ farms.  

In his leisure time, Graham enjoyed fishing in his early years but then took up golf and spent many happy hours at Cedar Glen Golf Course.

Graham was a lifetime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, and a member of the Masonic Lodge for almost 63 years.  He joined the Williamsburg Masonic Lodge in December of 1949, and after the Williamsburg Lodge closed he joined Henderson Lodge in Winchester.  

He was a member of the Karnak Shriners and the A & A.S.R. Valley of Ottawa Murray Chapter of Rose Croix.  He was a life member of the S.D.& G. Shrine Club of Cornwall and a life member of the Moore Sovereign Consistory of Hamilton.  

Graham is survived by his daughter Susan (Dan) Keyes of Howe Island and his granddaughters Kristen and Jennifer Keyes.

He was predeceased by sisters Jennie Johnston and Gladys Beckstead and brothers Cecil, Harry and Garnet Garlough.  He is also survived by nieces and nephews.   

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Sunday from 2-4 p.m.  A Masonic Memorial Service was held on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.  Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Monday, July 23rd at 11 a.m., with Rev. Norine Gullons officiating.  

Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery, Morrisburg. Pallbearers were Kristen Keyes, Jennifer Keyes, Russel Garlough, Donald Garlough, Gordon Garlough, Bert McIntosh and John Byvelds.

A resident of the Woodland Villa Nursing Home, Long Sault, for the past three years, Verna Tupper passed away there on Saturday, July 7, 2012.  She was 90.

Verna was born in Williamsburg Township, on September 25, 1921, to her parents Frederick and Rhoda Wells (nee Brown). She went to a one room public school in Froatburn and lived her whole life in the area. 

She worked at RCA in Prescott, Automatic Electric in Brockville and a small plant at the Cotton Mill in Cornwall. 

Verna was a gentle, kind person who was very supportive to family and friends in need.  She loved her family very much and her world lit up when her great- grandchildren were around.

Verna is survived by her son Graham (Elaine) Hunter of Froatburn, by her stepdaughter Shirley Morgan of Massena and by her brother Earl (Jackie) Wells of Crysler. 

She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Anna Katrine Hunter and Derek (MiSun) Hunter, and by her great-grandchildren Connor Graham, Mackenzie Graham, Anu Hunter and SheeAhn Hunter.  

She was predeceased by her husband Grant, her sisters Jean Beckstead and Eileen Gallinger and her brothers Russell and Ray Wells.  

She is also survived by nieces and nephews.

There was no visitation at the funeral home. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.  Donations to St. John’s Lutheran Church would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Ronald Desmond Perrin passed away peacefully at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Sunday, June 24, 2012. He was in his 86th year.

Ron was born in the Township of Rear of Leeds and Lansdowne in Leeds County on October 29, 1929.  He spent most of his life in construction work, and worked for Canadian Dredge and Dock Company for 42 years.  

Ron’s parents were Ernest Eston Perrin and Florence Ethel Whaley.

On March 20, 1979, Ron married Verla (Disheau) in Cornwall and for many years he and Verla were residents of Morrisburg. They formerly lived in LyneHurst.  

Ron was the beloved husband of Verla Disheau of Morrisburg, and loving father of Dwight (Cathy) Perrin of Kingston and Dwayne Perrin of Athens.  He was cherished grandfather of Cindy (Neil) Boyce of Harrowsmith and Lee (Kara) of Kingston, and dear great-grandfather of Kody, Harley and Braden of Kingston. He was loving stepfather of Richard Tyo and Brenda (Paul) St. Louis, both of Cornwall, dear step grandfather of Heidi (Randy) McGillis and dear step great-grandfather of Kaitlin and Sarah Lynn McGillis, all of Cornwall. Ron was the treasured brother of Bill (Iris) of Napanee, Goldie (Racemy) Braman of Ottawa and brother-in-law of Vivian Perrin of Portland.  He will be sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by sisters Doreen Perrin, Phoebe Bowes, Dorothy Warren and brothers Daniel and Frank. 

Ron was a kind man, always willing to drop what he was doing to help a neighbour. He always had the right part or the right tool and promptly went about getting the job done, and done well.  

He was a quiet man with a wonderful sense of humor.  Even when he didn’t speak, the expression on his face said a thousand words.  Ron was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching a good ball game, hockey game or wrestling match downstairs in his “mancave”.  

Friends were received at the Parker Funeral Home, Morrisburg on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Legion service was held at the home at 6:45 p.m.  

The funeral service was held at Lakeshore Drive United Church, Morrisburg on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at 11 a.m.  Cremation followed with inurnment at Iroquois Point United Cemetery at a later date.  

Pallbearers were Winston Baker, Wesley Baker, Glen Baldwin, Dave Cassell, Richard Barkley, Ken Palmer, Mark Perrin and Brian Speagle.

Memorial donations to Lakeshore Drive United Church will be gratefully acknowledged.

Dennis Irvine Payne passed away suddenly on June 9, 2012, at the age of 78.  

Born in Brinston on April 9, 1934, to Irvine and Jean (Smail) Payne, Dennis was the middle of three sons.  

Dennis attended high school in Iroquois, where he met and fell in love with Judy Whittle.  They eloped and married on August 31, 1957, and settled just west of the village of Iroquois.  Together they raised two children Scott (in Ottawa) and Jennifer (in North Bay).

Dennis was a well liked and respected electrician at DuPont Canada in Maitland from its startup in 1953, until his retirement in 1994. He was “a Maitland Original”. 

He was quick to offer his help to others outside of his work, doing wiring jobs for friends and helping his father-in-law who operated a poultry and fruit farm next to their homes.

Dennis and Judy were members of the Iroquois Ski Club, and Dennis had a passion for downhill and cross country skiing throughout his life.  He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman with a reverence for nature.  He loved  to curl, golf with his brother, Harold and he taught his children to skate and ski.  He was a frequent and enthusiastic spectator at outdoor sporting events in our area.

Dennis was predeceased by his parents and brothers, and he lost his wife in 1986.  

A private family service was held at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home in Iroquois, on June 15, 2012, with interment at Iroquois Point Cemetery. Rev Janet Evans officiated. 

Pallbearers were Bert Smail, Winston Baker, Ronnie Dickson and Scott Payne.  Honorary pallbearer was Don Tryon.

A resident of the Woodland Villa Nursing Home in Long Sault for the past 10 months, Josephine Lauzon passed away there on Monday, June 18, 2012. She  had recently celebrated her 95th  birthday with family and friends. 

Josephine was born in Windsor, Ontario, on May 15, 1917, to her parents Elmer and Helen Laforet (nee Labute). She was the oldest of four children, and except for a short time living in Detroit, Michigan, she spent most of her life in the Essex County area. 

In 1939, she married her childhood sweetheart,  Edmond Lauzon, at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Riverside, Ontario.  

Josephine was a “stay at home Mom”, and together she and Edmond  raised  four children, Carol, Larry, Edward and Judy.

In the early 1960’s, once the children were on their own, Josephine supported her husband in his lifelong dream of owning and operating a bait and tackle business. Together they opened  Eddie’s Bait Shop in Belle River, Ontario, where she worked along with him to build a very successful business.  They retired in the late 1980’s.  

Following his return from service in the Second World War, Ed had decided that travel was not his thing, but Josephine often visited Carol and Larry and their families in various parts of Canada. 

Ed passed away on their 51st wedding anniversary in 1990, and Josephine moved from their home in Belle River to an apartment in Tecumseh, to be closer to her daughter, Judy.  When her health began to fail, her son Edward moved in with her to care for her. As her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease advanced and her care became more complicated, she moved to Morrisburg to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Murray Richer, in 2005.

Josephine was a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada for almost 60 years. 

Josephine is survived by her daughter Carol (Murray) Richer of Morrisburg, son Edward Lauzon of Belle River & daughter-in-law Lila Lauzon of Summerside, PEI. 

She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Chris (Nancy) Richer, Angela Richer (Dan Krisjanis), Larry Lauzon, Steven (Jane) Lauzon, Leonard Suzor Jr., Michael Suzor and Mary Beth Suzor, and Erin Lauzon; and by 12 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews, and her special friend, Norma Jensen.  

Josephine was predeceased by her husband Edmond, her son Larry, daughter Judy and son-in-law Leonard Suzor, as well as her siblings Ralph Laforet, Raymond Laforet and  Mary Jane Preston, sister-in-law Vera Laforet and brother-in-law Elmer “Jake” Preston. 

Visitation took place at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Friday, June 22, 2012.  

Josephine’s Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Morrisburg on Saturday, June 23rd, at 11 a.m., with Rev. R. J. Chisholm officiating.  Cremation followed.  A graveside service  will be held at Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Cemetery, in Belle River, in the Fall.

Pallbearers were Chris Richer, Steven Lauzon, Leonard Suzor Jr., Frank Lauzon and Dan Krisjanis.

A resident of R.R.# 1 Iroquois for the past  27  years, Carol Froats passed away at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Sunday, June 10, 2012, following a one year battle with cancer.  She was 55.  

Carol was born in Montreal on January 19, 1957, to her parents Garfield and Joyce Thompson (nee Fenner). 

She attended public and high school in Cornwall, Ontario, and graduated from Western University in Guelph with a BA in psychology. 

Carol began her career in social work with Ministry of Social Services of Dundas County. She also worked for the city of Brockville Social Services and  the Cardinal Resource Center.

Carol left her kind and caring mark on the community. She wrote proposals and helped arrange financing for Naomi House in Winchester, and together with Rev. Allen Tysick she initiated the proposals, formed the constitution, and arranged the financing to begin the House of Lazarus in Mountain. 

Carol then started working at the Dundas County Hospice as assistant administrator, and she eventually took over as director.

Carol’s main love in life was her show dogs.  She was an accomplished breeder and her dogs won many awards in competitions in Quebec, Ontario, and many U.S. states.  

Carol lived a short but busy life and will be missed.

Carol is survived by her husband Brad, her mother Joyce Thompson of Cornwall, her sister Mary (Keith) Errington of Williamsburg, her father-in-law Everett Froats of Brinston and her sister-in-law Chris (Doug) McNairn of Morrisburg.   

She is also survived by nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father Garfield.  

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Saturday, June 16th from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. 

A Memorial Service followed at 1 p.m., with Rev. Brenda Bailey officiating.

Edna Anderson, (nee Dare) passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 14, 2012, surrounded by family at the Civic Hospital, Ottawa, following an injury and surgical complications. She was in her 80th year.

Edna was born on July 6, 1932, in Montreal, where, while in high school, she met the love of her life, Jim Anderson.  

Jim and Edna were married 61 years and happily raised five children.

Edna worked as a jewelry clerk, a census taker and proved herself as a business woman running a silver reclamation business. 

She taught Sunday School, was a Girl Guide Commissioner, and enjoyed riding and raising various animals on the Anderson family farm in Quebec. 

Coming to Ontario, Edna ran the Riverside Motel. Upon retirement, Edna and Jim spent winters in Florida and summers sailing the St. Lawrence River. 

Edna loved to sing and read. She was a natural gardener, a good cook,  a seamstress, and she  loved to entertain family at large gatherings. Home and family meant everything to Edna. 

She was a very strong, dignified woman who loved to socialize and always looked a million bucks.  She will be sorely missed. 

Edna leaves to mourn, her beloved husband James Anderson of Iroquois. She was a loving mother of Robert, Barbara (Gerry), David (Roberta), Donna (Obbe) and daughter-in-law Lyne. 

She was cherished grandmother to Susan, Linda, Michael, Eric, Erin, Rohan, Hannah and Hayden and great grandmother to William, Gabrielle, Connor and Jessie. She was dear sister to Phyllis, Lillian, John (Nora) and Margaret (Gerry) and will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. 

Edna was predeceased by her son Steve and her parents Edith and Henry Dare.

Memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Iroquois Point Cemetery (Locks).

A resident of the Hanesville area for the past 55 years, Alfred Link passed away suddenly at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Saturday, June 2, 2012, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was 91.

Alfred was born in Oro Township, on December 2, 1920, to his parents James and Mary Link.  

On October 22, 1937, he married Netta Thompson and together they had six children Ralph, Betty, Jane, Carol, Judy and Rusty. 

Alfred lived independently in his own home into his 90’s. He was happily married for more than 70 years, was a father to six children, and a grandfather to more than 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren combined. 

Alfred worked hard as a business owner for many years to support his family. He served as a member of the S.D.&.G. Highlanders in Belgium, France, Holland and Germany and risked his life to fight for freedom . 

Despite all of this, Alfred was ultimately a humble man.  

His family will all remember that he had rhythm! He was always whistling, humming, or tapping out the beat of a country and western song.  

Alfred loved watching wrestling on television, and he had a vegetable garden that was bigger than most people’s entire plot of land.  

If you showed Alfred a picture of something you wanted to build, he would be in his workshop the next day piecing it together. 

No one will forget that Alfred always wore suspenders, that he proclaimed Netta to be the best cook in the world, or that he would always drink his coffee from the saucer instead of the cup.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends. 

Alfred is survived by his children Ralph (Margaret) of Prescott, Betty (Bill) Pryer of Brockville, Jane (John) Grootjans of Iroquois, Carol (Carl) Harper of R.R.# 2 Brinston, Judy (Ray) Selleck of Hyndman, Rusty (Carol) of Iroquois and his sister Ida Reid of Orillia.  

He will be fondly remembered by 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.  

Alfred was predeceased by his beloved wife Netta Thompson; an infant daughter Ruth; grandchildren Sydney Ava and Chloe Anna Hodder; brothers Harvey, Robbie and Mac Link; and sisters Bella McCarthur, Ruby English, Tillie Handy and Doris Thompson.  

He is also survived by nieces and nephews.    

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on Monday, June 4 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  

A Legion service was held on Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 5th at 11 a.m., with Rev. Brian Barr officiating.  Interment followed at Spruce Haven Cemetery, Brinston.  

Pallbearers were grandsons Andy Link, Ryan Selleck, John Durant, Joe Vanderzweep, Tony Hodder and Trevor Thompson.

Gladys Fortune passed away peacefully at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Friday, June 15, 2012. She was 94.

Gladys was the beloved wife of the late James P. Fortune and long-time companion of Tad Kluska of Morrisburg.  

She was loving mother of Stan Fortune (Cathy) of Ingleside, and will be sadly missed by her two grandchildren Kim (Roger) and Jason (Rhonda). 

She was predeceased by her parents Stanley and Dorinda (McCracken) Whaley and by one sister Greta Whaley. 

Visitation was at the Brownlee Funeral Home MacDougall Chapel in Ingleside, on Tuesday, from noon until 1:45 p.m. 

A service in celebration of Gladys’ life was held in the chapel of the funeral home on Tuesday June 19 at 2 p.m. Reverend Arlyce Schiebout  of Lakeshore United Church Morrisburg, officiated.  Interment  followed at New Union Cemetery, Williamsburg.

As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Winchester Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
