Earl Stanley Brown

 

A lifetime resident of the area, Earl Brown passed away at the Carefor Hospice in Cornwall, on Thursday, February 28, 2013. He was 73.

Earl was born at home in Morewood, on April 23, 1939, to his parents Stanley and Violet Brown (nee James). As a child, he worked on the family farm while attending Morewood School.

In 1958, the family relocated to Glenn Becker where they ran the Brown’s Service Station.

Earl and Carole (McHaffie of Glen Becker) were married on September 3, 1960, and moved down the road to Froatburn. During this time, Earl worked for The Department of Highways (Iroquois). 

In 1966, Earl and Carole, and one-year-old son Andrew, moved to Nudell Bush. Shortly after the move, Earl started work at the Rohm and Haas Plant in Morrisburg where he remained until his retirement in 1994.

Earl started playing hockey when he was 16, not knowing then that his passion for the sport would become the foundation of his existence. He started playing organized hockey in 1955, at age 16. He played with the Morrisburg Juveniles in 1955 and 1956, and then with the Winchester Juniors from 1956-1960. From there, he played Intermediate hockey with Winchester from 1960-69. He led the team in scoring in 1965-66-67 and won the St Lawrence scoring title in 1965-66.

Earl loved his hockey and hockey took him to many places, Nashville, the Yukon, Las Vegas, Florida and many cities in Ontario. 

One of his highlights was playing in a gold medal game for the Cornwall Hubs at the old Montreal Forum in 1987.

Earl enjoyed many sports activities such as broomball, baseball, golf, fishing, hunting and cheering for his Detroit Red Wings.

Earl is survived by his wife Carole, his son Andy (Cindy) Brown of R.R. # 1 Morrisburg, his grandson Ryan Brown and his siblings Ralph Brown of Morrisburg and Mildred Brown of Windsor. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his parents Stanley and Violet Brown (nee James). 

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 6th, at 11a.m., with Rev. Geoff Howard officiating. Interment will be held in the spring at Maple Ridge Cemetery, Chesterville.

Pallbearers were Ryan Brown, Brodey Casselman, Len Bellamy, and Pete Clement.

Jane Ewing

 

Born in Pierre Tautreau (Ville) Montreal, Quebec, on February 7, 1956, long-time Iroquois resident Jane (nee Keeler) Ewing passed away suddenly at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Thursday, January 3, 2013. She was 56 years old.

Jane was very active in community life and well known in Iroquois and Morrisburg. 

She was the owner of Pokey’s Place in Morrisburg, and for many years she served the community as the coordinator of the Morrisburg  (BIA).

For many years prior to opening Pokey’s Place, Jane worked alongside her mother, Ann as a typesetter at the Iroquois Post/Chieftan newspaper in Iroquois. At times she also doubled as a receptionist. 

Jane also worked alongside her husband Bill in their cleaning business, cleaning the Bank of Montreal for 30 years. Working as a secretary at the Iroquois Municipal Office, Jane attained her AMCT designation in 1998.  

Jane was always ready and willing to help everyone. She served her home town of Iroquois as a councilor and Hydro Commissioner during the last term of council before the amalgamation of South Dundas.  

She served on the Iroquois Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Board of the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Anyone who knew Jane knew of her special affection for all types of animals especially stray cats and dogs.

Jane was the loving daughter of the late David and Ann Keeler of Iroquois.

Jane is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Bill Ewing. She will be sadly missed by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and close special friends Gwen and Rod McGill of Iroquois and Joan and Jim Grant of Cardinal.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home Iroquois, on Tuesday, January 8th from 6-9 p.m.

Carl Russell Banford

 

Carl Russell Banford died peacefully at his home in Iroquois on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at the age of 90 years.  

Carl was born on October 9, 1922, in Matilda Township, to Alexander Banford and the former Annie Mae Fader.  

He was raised and educated in Maxville, in his early years before his family moved back to Iroquois. 

He worked for Jack Kerr as an apprentice then for Esso Home heating after which he retired  at the age of 53 years.  

Carl married Hilda Mustard on July 24, 1943, in Iroquois.  They had two children Joanne Banford of Iroquois, and Eric and his wife Alice of Perth.  

Carl served during the Second World War. He enlisted at the age of 20, was captured on the fifth day and was a POW for 11 months. He was released in May 1945.  

Carl was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 370 in Iroquois. He served 28 years on the Iroquois Fire Department and two years as a Sunday school teacher at St. John’s Anglican Church.  

For many years Carl was an avid carpenter and painter.  After retiring, he worked at Upper Canada Village as a tinsmith and taught many students his trade.

Carl leaves to mourn his wife Hilda Banford, his daughter Joanne, his son Eric and his wife Alice and his sister Frances Andrew of Peterborough.

He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Joshua (Amanda) and Erica (Rob) Hodgson Shane and Pat Dawson and by his great-grandchildren Liam Thomas and Alexandria Li. 

He was predeceased by his parents and  his infant brother Gordon.  He is survived by several nieces and nephews.  

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on Wednesday, February 6, from 4-7 p.m.  A Legion Service was held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

Margaret Irene Harriman

Margaret Harriman passed away peacefully on Monday, February 18, 2113. She was in her 92nd year. 

The first-born child of William Swartz and Mary Irene Midforth, Margaret was born in St. Thomas, Ontario, on May 4th, 1921. 

She was a sister to Edna of London, Ontario, and was predeceased by three brothers. Donald, Clark, and Floyd. 

Margaret moved to Toronto, where she met and married her husband Dwane Harriman on May 29, 1946. 

Margaret and Dwane soon moved to a farm east of Morrisburg, and lived there until 1955. At that time, they moved to a farm north of Williamsburg where they raised their seven children. 

After Dwane died in 1990, Margaret continued to live on the farm until November of 2008, when she entered Woodland Villa Nursing Home in Long Sault.

Margaret is survived by her seven children: Allan and his wife Angie; Deanna and her husband John; Anne; Marlene and her husband Larry; Donna, David, and Glenn.

She will be fondly remembered by six grandchildren: Eric; Andrew and his wife Sherry; Jo-Anna and her husband Jesse; Brian; Kelly; Adam and his wife Amanda. 

There are 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grand daughter. Auntie Margaret was much loved to many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was a loving and hard working wife and mother. She was tireless in caring for the responsibilities of raising children, managing a farm, gardening, and sewing. Many people remember her as an excellent cook.

Margaret began to study the bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1967, and was baptized in 1977. She was a deeply devoted and faithful servant of Jehovah.

It was her goal in life to prove herself loyal to him. Margaret had a strong belief in the promise of resurrection and this is what she always took comfort in. 

In God’s due time, she knew she will return to life on a paradise earth. She will be remembered and miss by all who knew her. 

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Parker Funeral Home, Morrisburg, A memorial service will be held on March 2nd, 2013 at 2 p.m, at the Kingdom Hall 20077 Pitt Street, Cornwall, Ontario.

Eileen Baker

A lifetime resident of the Iroquois area, Eileen Baker passed away at the Wellington House Nursing Home in Prescott, on Saturday, February 16, 2013. She was 93.

The daughter of Mason and Winnifred Shaver (nee Workman), Eileen Beatrice was born September 1, 1919, at the family home west of Iroquois.

She grew up with her twin sister Ila and younger sister Vera. She attended elementary school a short distance from her home.

On September 11, 1942, she married Curtis Baker and together they raised six children Donna, Carolyn, Winston, Allan, Sandra and Diane.

Eileen worked many years at the Caldwell Linen Mill. She retired in 1984 as floor lady.

After retiring, Eileen enjoyed life on the farm, gardening, having family gatherings, and the many visits from family, especially her grandchildren. To Eileen, family meant everything.

As Eileen’s health began to fail, she took residence at the Wellington House in 2011.

Eileen is survived by her children Donna (Neville) Johnston of Carp, Carolyn (Wayne) Barkley of Iroquois, Winston (Bernie) of Iroquois, Allan of Iroquois, Sandra (Albert) Tatton of Brockville and Diane of St. Lazare, P.Q. 

Eileen will be fondly remembered by nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. 

She was predeceased by her husband Curtis, her grandson Steven Payne, her son-in-law Pierre Drolet, her daughter-in-law Heather Baker and her sisters Ila Abrams and Vera McInnis.

She is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service was held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 19th at 2 p.m., with Rev. Tracey Smith officiating.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Maitland. Pallbearers were Wesley Baker, Carrie Gilmour, Dale Gilmour, Chris Drolet, Ryan Held, and Kendra Held.

The family extends their utmost appreciation to David Lapier and staff of the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home for their compassion, kindness and professional guidance for the funeral arrangements.

W. Glenn Keyes

The family of W. Glenn Keyes is saddened by his sudden passing on February 15, 2013 from injuries sustained from a fall six days earlier.  

Glenn, a long-time resident of Morrisburg, was well known by many from his years as manager of the Bank of Montreal in Morrisburg and from his community service on the original Old Home Week Committee, the Municipal Mural Project, the Lost Villages Society, the fundraising committee for the expansion of the Winchester Hospital, and as a canvasser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.  

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 60 years, he served in many leadership positions in the Church and completed two service missions in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife, Kay.

Glenn was born in Kingston, Ontario, on July 3, 1928, to George Wilmer Keyes and Lulu May Orser and was raised on a farm on Wolfe Island.  

He attended high school in Kingston, and after graduation he joined the Bank of Montreal where he worked for 34 years – beginning in Kingston.  

He was transferred to Morrisburg where he met Kathleen (Kay) Markell, and they were married on June 18, 1951.  

They raised five children in Toronto, and then moved back to Morrisburg in 1970.  

In his younger days, Glenn enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and curling.  

Glenn was predeceased by his wife Kay in 2006.  In 2008, he married Jeannine Maleau and they enjoyed two and a half years together before Jeannine passed away in 2011.

Glenn is survived by his sister, Doreen Crowder of Calgary, Alberta, his five children, Linda (Wayne) Snook, Kevin (Susan) Keyes, Ian (Cindy) Keyes, Randy (Julie) Keyes and Anita Keyes, as well as his 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.  

His children are grateful to Glenn for his legacy of caring, service, patience and integrity.  We miss you, Dad.

His funeral service was held on February 19, 2013, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cornwall.  

Interment will follow in the spring at Fairview Cemetery in Mariatown, Ontario.

Irene Fetterly

A resident of the Hartford Home in Morrisburg for the past five years, Irene Fetterly passed away at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. She was 92.

Irene was born in Simcoe on February 5, 1921, to her parents Fred and Annabelle Beaupre (nee Anderson).  

Irene will be fondly remembered by her late husband Jack Fetterly’s children Donald (Judy) Fetterly of Iroquois and Barbara (Colin) Cope of Otterville and their families.

She was predeceased by her brother Keith Beaupre and her sister Marie Hammond. She will be sadly missed by nieces and nephews.

A private family funeral service was held at the Hartford Retirement Home in Morrisburg on Sunday, February 17th at 1 p.m with Rev. Janet Evans officiating.

For those wishing, donations may be made to the charity of choice. 

Arrangements were entrusted to the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois.

Wally Keeler

 

A lifetime resident of the area, Wally Keeler passed away suddenly at home in Morrisburg, on Saturday, February 2, 2013.  He was 52. 

Wally was born in Matilda Township, on January 29, 1961, to his parents Howard and Eva Keeler (nee Sipes).  He attended Dixon’s Corners Public School and Seaway District High School.  

On April 16, 2005, at Knox Presbyterian Church in Iroquois, Wally married Kim Sypes and together they enjoyed seven and one half years of married life. 

Wally possessed a good sense of humour, and he enjoyed playing Phase 10 and working on models.  

I am missing you always, you never said I’m leaving, you never said goodbye, you were gone before I knew it and only God knows why.  A million times I needed you, a million times I cried, if love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, in death I love you still, in my heart I hold a place that only you can fill.

Wally is survived by his wife Kim Sypes and by his siblings Barbara Richardson of Pittston, Larry Keeler of Smiths Falls, Madilene Collison (Gary) of Iroquois, Arnold Keeler of Burlington, Glen Keeler (Judy) of Brinston and Karon White (Paul) of R.R.# 2 Brinston. He will be fondly rmembered by his mother-in-law  Elaine Fawcett of Morrisburg.  

He was brother-in-law to Donna Zeron (Mike) of Iroquois, Dennis Fawcett (Jennifer Kirkland) of Williamsburg and Cherie Seymour of Morrisburg. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Wally was predeceased by his parents Howard and Eva Keeler (nee Sipes), his sister Joyce Keeler and his brothers Donald and Arliss Keeler.         

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 5th at 11 a.m., with Rev. Geoff Howard officiating. Interment will be at Spruce Haven Cemetery, Brinston in the spring. Pallbearers were Curtis White, Chris White, Dennis Fawcett, Mike Zeron, Perry Keeler and Shelby Keeler.

Lloyd David Millward

 

Lloyd David Millward passed away peacefully, after a lengthy illness, at Brantford General Hospital, on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. 

Formerly of Morrisburg, and a longtime resident of Paris, Lloyd was in his 87th year. 

Lloyd was a longtime businessman in Paris, owning Millward`s IGA.  He was also very active with St. James Anglican Church Paris.

He was beloved husband to the late Evelyn (nee Wilson -1992); the late Margaret (Ouderkirk 2004), and the late Jean Fairbrother (2010).

 He was loving dad to Scott (Donna) and Paul (Tracy) and  cherished grandpa to Jason, Bryan (Ryanne), Allison, Leslie (Ryan), Lauren, Christopher (Leily), Geoffrey and Erin. He was dear great grandpa to Will and Ben.  

Lloyd was also special father and grandfather to Margaret and Jean’s children and their families; dear brother to Dorothy Casselman (the late Ivan), Mary McVey (Gordon), and Lyle (Sheila), and brother-in-law to Verna Young.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  

Friends called at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, 184 Grand River St. N., Paris, on Sunday, February 17, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service was held at St. James Anglican Church (8 Burwell St. Paris.) on Monday at 11 a.m. with Father Victor Kischak officiating.

Interment will follow later at Paris Cemetery.

Jim Derouchie

 

A resident of Ingleside for the past 14 years, Jim Derouchie passed away at the Cornwall Community Hospital, McConnell Site, on Sunday, February 10, 2013.  He was 66.

Jim was born in Cornwall, on July 8, 1946, to his parents Howard and Mary Derouchie (nee Lapierre).  He grew up in Lancaster, and moved to Iroquois, where he worked at the Caldwell Linen Mill for more than 30 years. 

On July 19, 1969, he married Paulette Gibeau and together they had two sons Steven and John.  

Jim was an avid fisherman and hunter. 

Jim is survived by his wife Paulette, his sons Steven (Stephanie) of Kitchener and John (Josée) of Cornwall and his siblings Linda Sauve of Lancaster, Judy Timmons of Iroquois, Shirley Sauve of Cornwall and Suzanne (Mike) Menard of Lancaster.  

He will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Delana, Skylar, Hunter and Ethan.  

He was the dear brother-in-law of Sylva (Paulette) Gibeau, Rick Gibeau, Gilles (Diane) Gibeau, Denis Gibeau, Ronald (Louise) Gibeau, Guy (Julie) Gibeau, Mike (Cathy) Gibeau, Mark (Lori) Gibeau and Sue (Mike) Campeau, all of Cornwall. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.  

Jim was predeceased by sisters Gail Lalonde and Sheila Forgues.   

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on Thursday, February 14th from 9 a.m. until time of service.  

A Memorial Service followed at 11 a.m., with Father Chisholm officiating.
