Patricia “Patty” MacKenzie

August 20, 1952-November 27, 2013

Beloved of Neville Vincent, yesterday, today and forever as my best friend, my pillar of strength, my partner and my wife. Thank you for all the joy, love and laughter. I will miss you so. 

Their little sister will be sorely missed, long loved and remembered by Nora (Mickey), Alan (Gloria) and all of their children and grand-children. She will be deeply missed as well by Marcia, stepson Ian (Tanya,) our granddaughter Jessica and all of her friends.

Patty and I would like to send special thanks to Gloria, our nieces Kerri and Erin (and their families) as well as all of our friends for their close, loving support through our journey. You each, in your own way, made our trouble so much easier to bear.

Charles Duane Toupin

 

It is with much sadness that his family announces the death of Charles Toupin of R.R.# 1 Morrisburg, who passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at the age of 65 years.  

Charlie will be sadly missed by his wife Christine Munro Toupin, his children Tracey Myers (Bill) of Cardinal, Leslie Terry (Paul) of Belleville, Julie Peck of Nova Scotia and Christian Heaton of Kanata.

Charles was loving Grandpa of Brittney Myers, Billy Myers, Auston Wickware, Sedona Terry, James Peck and Patrick Peck.

Raised in Cardinal, Charlie is the beloved son of Lorna Toupin of Cardinal and the late Charles Toupin Sr.  

He was dear brother of Rick Toupin (Brenda) of Nova Scotia and Ivan Toupin (Nancy) of Cardinal. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 

Charlie was predeceased by his daughter Tammy Toupin Wickware, his son Andrew Heaton, his sister Mary Lafontaine and his brother Peter Arthur Toupin.

 Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11 a.m.. The service was conducted by Rev. Bruce Thompson.  

Interment of cremated remains followed at St. John’s Riverside Cemetery in Cardinal.

Blanche Fulton

 

A lifetime resident of the area, Blanche Fulton passed away at the Carefor Hospice in Cornwall, on Sunday, November 10, 2013. She was 84. 

Blanche was born in Ottawa, on April 11, 1929, and was adopted by John and Christena Erratt (nee Dickson).  In 1953, she married Jim Fulton and together they adopted three children Dennis, Ronald and Joan. 

As a young woman, Blanche worked at Caldwell Linen Mills for 20 years.  Following that, she worked at Berry’s Egg Farm for a few years before she got a job as the first female milk truck driver in the area. She drove the milk truck for 18 years, then drove a school bus for many years until she retired at the age of 67.  

Until the age of 80, Blanche drove the van for J.W. MacIntosh Senior Support Centre in Williamsburg transporting area seniors to many of their appointments.  She then drove seniors to their appointments using her own vehicle. 

Blanche loved helping people in her community. Blanche was always a very active woman, and she enjoyed life to the fullest. 

She loved animals and her passion was riding. She took very good care of her horses, one horse in particular that she owned lived to be 35 years old. Blanche participated in cattle drives for five years in western Canada, riding all day, pitching her own tent and sleeping under the stars.

Blanche loved to dance and she enjoyed listening to country music.

She was a hostess for Dundas Bus Lines on many trips to the Grand Ole Opry and other points in the United States and Canada.

Blanche is survived by her children Dennis (Cindy) Fulton of Brinston and Ron Fulton of Cornwall; her grandchildren Brad, Crystal, Trevor and Stewart; her great-grandson Jaxon and her sister-in-law Grace Erratt of Winchester.

She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Joanna Fulton, nieces and nephews and her good friends Rob Tuckey and Lisa Raymond 

Blanche was predeceased by her husband Jim, her daughter Joan Fulton, her sister Evelyn Wells and her brothers Morley and Gerald Erratt.   

A graveside funeral service was held at Spruce Haven Cemetery in Brinston, on Wednesday, November 13th, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Valerie Vande Wiele officiating.

Ronald Dwayne Daw

 

Ronald Dwayne Daw (1950-2013) passed away peacefully Saturday, November 9, 2013, at the Ottawa Queensway Carleton Hospital.

Ronald will be sadly missed by his beloved life partner, Sharron McCarthy who remained by his side as his constant companion.

Predeceased by his father, Dwayne Daw of Cardinal, Ronald will be forever loved and missed by his mother Ann Farmer of Iroquois. He was also predeceased by his good friend Reg Farmer.

Ron leaves behind his brother Jimmy Daw (Susan), of Cambridge, sisters Kathryn Thivierge (Daw) of Stittsville and Nancy Cameron (Tamara) of Renfrew and his loving and special aunt, Margaret Cameron of Toronto.

Ron’s children Beth Brayton of Brockville and Marsha Beard (Mike) of Germany will miss him dearly. He will also be fondly remembered by his special friends Cindy McCarthy (David), Leslie McCarthy (Chris) and Sherry McCarthy of Ottawa.

Also mourning Ron are his grandchildren Summer, Jacob and Jesse Brayton and Lucas Beard as well as the children in his life, Ava and Raia Guth, CharlieRose and Maddison Levac.

Ron will be missed by all of his nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and Ron’s life will be celebrated with a spring internment.

The family would greatly appreciate donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Doreen Casselman

 

A resident of the Hartford Home in Morrisburg, for the past 3.5 years, Doreen Casselman passed away there on Saturday, October 28, 2013.  She was 83.

Doreen was born in northern New York State, on September 8, 1930, to her parents Don and Florence Shaver. She moved with her family to the Iroquois area when she was a young girl.

On May 28, 1948, Doreen married Lyle Casselman, and together they had five children Gerald, Doug, David, Donna and Gilda. 

Lyle and Doreen operated a dairy farm and orchard on Rowena road for many years which is now owned by their son David.  

Doreen enjoyed playing cards, shopping, visiting with people and spending time with her family. 

Doreen is survived by her children David (Diane) of RR1 Iroquois, Doug (Mary) of Williamsburg, Gerald (Marlene) of RR1 Iroquois, Donna (Lyall) Cutler of Cardinal and the late Gilda Shay (Murray) of RR1 Iroquois. 

Doreen will be sadly missed by nine grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.  She was predeceased by her husband Lyle.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Friends called at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home Iroquois, on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p,m. Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 30th, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Dan Hayward officiating.

Interment followed at Spruce Haven Cemetery, Brinston.  Pallbearers were Tyler Casselman, Matthew Casselman, Darryl Casselman, Darryl Britton, Peter Pepers and Gordon Empey.

Joseph Crites

 

A resident of 830 Joseph Street in Cardinal, for the past eight years, Joseph Crites passed away at home on Saturday, November 9, 2013.  He was 93.

Joseph was born on May 8th, 1920, at the Savor homestead on the Broken Second west of Iroquois in Matilda Township, to Allen Crites and Ida Savor.  

At the age of two his mother passed away and he was raised by his Aunt Ada and Uncle Jacob Savor and his grandmother Maria Savor.

He attended school at the Cardinal Station School. Joe lived on the farm for 85 years where he ran a dairy farm, and  delivered the mail to the residents of R.R.# 2 Iroquois for 21 years.

In his early years, Joe loved helping his neighbours with the corn and threshing and was always willing and ready to help wherever he could. In 1976 he went to work for  the St. Lawrence Parks Commission at the bird sanctuary.  About this time he sold his dairy cows and ran a Charolais cow-calf operation.  

In 1983, Joe married Louise Droppo and they continued to farm on the homestead.

Joseph retired from the Parks Commission in 1985, but continued to run the farm until 2005, when it was sold and he and Louise moved to 830 Joseph St.  in Cardinal.

Joseph loved the horse races all his life and had visited many of the tracks throughout eastern Canada.  From an early age, he called for square dances, an art he learned from his father and grandfather at house parties which were popular at that time.  

He loved old time music and was a member of the Osgoode Old Time Music Association and Morewood Old Time Music Association. He called for many dances throughout eastern Ontario.  

Joe was also a member of the Country Cousins Band for 25 years where he called for their square dances.  

Euchre was another favorite pastime and many nights were spent at various Legions and halls. 

Joe is survived by his wife Louise Crites (nee Casselman), and his step-children Tom Droppo of Abbotsford, B.C., Susan (Brian) Morrow of R.R.# 2 Chesterville and Andrew  Droppo (Penny Roach) of Hanesville. 

He will be fondly remembered by his step-grandchildren Pam (Adam) Andre, Terry (Ashley) Morrow, Leah Droppo, Kayla Droppo, Samantha Droppo, Megan Droppo and by his step-great-grandchildren Halley Morrow, Alexis Andre and Teagan Andre. 

He was dear brother-in-law to Richard (Fanny) Casselman of Glen Becker and Viola Droppo of Perth and dear cousin of Patrick Rooney and Blanche Pigeon.  

He was predeceased by his parents Allan and Ida Crites (nee Savor) and his cousins Julia Rooney, Catherine Burns, Frank Rooney and Lawrence Rooney.  

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal, on Thursday, November 14th at 11 a.m., with Father Brennan officiating.  

Interment followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cardinal.  Pallbearers were Cephus Sypes, John McMillan, Terry Riddell, Allan Groves, Earl Riddell and Robert Fisher. 

Honorary pallbearers were Howard Moore, John Francis, Everett Froats, Bart Dixon, Don Bigelow and Paul Riddell.

Mary Bright

 

Iroquois resident, Mary Bright, beloved wife of the late Howard Townsend and the late Robert (Bob) Bright, passed away suddenly at St. Vincent Hospital in Ottawa, on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 following a debilitating stroke four months earlier.  

Mary was born in Timmins, Ontario, in 1928, to her parents James and Elizabeth Maxwell (nee Pierce).  There, while working as a bank teller, she met and married Howard, her husband of 42 plus years. They retired to  Iroquois in 1980.  

In later years, Mary married Bob, with whom she spent six happy years travelling to foreign destinations.  

As a very active member in St. John’s Anglican Church in Iroquois, Mary devoted her energies to working with her friends at various church functions and events.  An avid gardener, folks could often find Mary happily scratching in her flower gardens at her home and her cottage.

Predeceased by her brothers, Jim, John, Bob and half-brother Doug (Perks), Mary is survived by her son Barry and daughter-in-law Ann of Ottawa, step-daughters Eileen (John) Johnston of Morrisburg, Hazel (Peter) Taylor of Kingston, and Ann Butler of Mono (Ontario), and step-son James Bright (partner Gaston St-Onge) of Ottawa. 

Mary will be fondly missed by grandchildren Samantha, Peter and Rick and his wife Jennifer, great-grandchildren Liam and Lily, and step-grandchildren Lindsay, Ryan, Lauren, Hannah, Erin, Kristin and Kelsey. 

In honour of Mary’s active life, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday November 9, 2013, at St. John’s Anglican Church in Iroquois.

Marjorie Hamilton

 

A resident of R.R.#1 Morrisburg, Marjorie Hamilton (nee Beaupre), passed away at the Carefor Hospice in Cornwall, on Sunday, October 27, 2013. She was 74.

Marjorie was born in Morrisburg, on April 4, 1939, to her parents George and Grace Beaupre (nee Loucks) and lived her entire life in the Morrisburg area. Marjorie worked for many years at Caldwell Linen Mills. 

Marjorie was a devout Christian lady who willingly shared her faith with everyone she came in contact with. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother whose smile and pleasant disposition will be dearly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know her. 

Marjorie is survived by her husband Keith, by her children Sherry (Steven) Mark of Parry Sound, Rick (Darlene) Lascelle of Williamsburg and Daniel (Freda) Lamoureux of Crysler and by her siblings Junior (Helen) Beaupre and Edna Kelly, both of Morrisburg.  

Marjorie will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Denis Lamoureux, Sarah Staal (Stuart) and Alexandra Lascelle. She is also survived by nieces and nephews. 

She was predeceased by her grandson Jeffrey Lamoureux, her sisters Dorothy Cadieux, Ruby Montroy and Adiena Cleary and her brothers Douglas Crites and Harold Crites.  

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 30th, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Bruce North and Pastor Marcel Charette officiating.  

Interment followed at New Union Cemetery, Williamsburg.  Pallbearers were John Cinnamon, Gord Cline, Brian Hamilton, Roger Patterson, Andrew Wright and Gary Whitford.

Don Smithson

 

A resident of Morrisburg for the past 59 years, Don Smithson passed away at home on Thursday, October 24, 2013. He was 81.

Don was born in Meaford on October 18, 1932, to his parents Edgar and Mary Smithson (nee Heron). 

He moved to Morrisburg in 1954, to work for Ontario Hydro’s Relocation Department for the St. Lawrence Seaway. On October 27th, 1956, he married Linda Casselman and together they had two daughters Pamela and Christie.  

Later, Don worked as a salesman for various concrete companies, owned Smithson Convenience Store, then worked for McGillis Home Hardware before working, until retirement, as Arena Manager at the Morrisburg Arena. 

Don is survived by his wife Linda Smithson (nee Casselman), his daughters Pamela Dawn Ropars (Paul) of Winchester and Christie Lynn Byvelds (Pat) of Williamsburg, his grandchildren Amanda Hodgson (Scott), Mark Byvelds (Christie), Danielle Ropars (Nick), Nicole Ropars and his great-grandchildren Olivia Hodgson and Marek Byvelds. 

He is also survived by his sisters Anne Hunter (Barry) of Meaford, Arlene Boothe (Jim) of Wasaga Beach and his brother Shawn Smithson (Connie) of Meaford and nieces and nephews.  

He was predeceased by his parents Edgar and Mary Smithson.  

Don was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family.

A private family service will be held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg at a later date.  Interment of cremated remains will be at New Union Cemetery, Williamsburg.

Jack Van Hoof

 

A resident of the Williamsburg area for the past 44 years, Jack Van Hoof passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 19, 2013. He was 85.

Jack was born in Mariahout, The Netherlands on November 28, 1927, to his parents Petrus and Francisca Van Hoof (nee Bekx).  As a young man Jack served in the Dutch army in Indonesia, but he didn’t like the military because he was a peaceful man–never a fighter.  

Following his mandatory military service, Jack followed his childhood sweetheart Toni Byvelds to Canada, and on June 29, 1957, they were married at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Chesterville. Together they were blessed with six children.

Jack was a very hard working man and with his brothers-in-law, Gerry Byvelds and Tony Byvelds they formed a company named B & H Masonry.  Jack’s specialty was working with stone, and he was involved in the construction of many local homes until he retired in 1992.  

In addition to being a talented mason, Jack was also very good at woodworking.  His family and friends are proud owners of many wooden toys and keepsakes that Jack created.  

Jack and Toni liked to travel and took several bus trips across Canada and the United States.  He also enjoyed riding his bike and taking long walks.

Jack liked to garden, and he was very proud of his flowers and gardens.  He was a member of the Horticultural Society and also served as a member of their executive.  

Jack was a good man, a man of great faith and a loyal family man.  He was proud of his family and a devoted husband to Toni for 56 years.  

Jack leaves a wonderful legacy behind, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. 

Jack is survived by his wife Toni, his children Francine (Jos) Melenhorst of Winchester, Donald (Laurie) of Boucks Hill, Gary (Julie) of Morrisburg, Brian (Shanna) of Williamsburg, Paul (Donna) of Metcalfe and Lisa (Steve) Cassidy of Addison.

He will be sadly missed by his siblings Martien (Marta), Nella (Janes) Vander Hurk, Theo, Harrie (Maria), Gerard (Jeanne), Andre (Rina) and Katherine Sanders, all of Holland.  

Jack will be fondly remembered by 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.  

He was predeceased by his parents Petrus and Francisca Van Hoof (nee Bekx), his sister Johanna Rooyakkers, his brother Karel and his granddaughter Michelle.    

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Morrisburg, on Tuesday, October 22nd at 11 a.m.  with Father Chisholm officiating.  Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Morrisburg.  

Honorary pallbearers were Ted Vanderzweep and Clare Racine.  Active pallbearers were Pat Byvelds, Pete Byvelds, Robert Byvelds, Raymond Van Moorsel, John Byvelds, Danny Byvelds, Mike Byvelds and Steven Byvelds.
