A pair of 5-1 hockey games spelled both good news and bad news for the South Dundas Novice B Lions in Upper Canada Minor League action this week.

Last Thursday night, January 22, the Lions picked up a home ice 5-1 win against the visiting South Grenville #1 Rangers, but then on Sunday, January 25, they were on the road to Kemptville where they were dealt a 5-1 loss by the B 2 Panthers.

Sunday in Kemptville, Nick Connors scored the lone Lions goal, spoiling Gareth Robinson’s shut out late in the second period. Luke Byvelds provided the helper.

After a scoreless first period, the Panthers went up 3-0 in the second period on goals by Brandon Taylor, Nolan Dulmage and Carter Lemay.

Dulmage counted his second goal early in the third period, and Rhett Mclean made it 5-1 minutes later.

Last Thursday night in Morrisburg, it was goaltender Aiden Hutt’s game as he gave up only one goal early in the third period to Zander Pittman.

Lions Devon Honders (from Cooper McCooeye) and Nick Connors (from Mason Hummel) gave the Lions a 2-0 first period lead.

Three unanswered goal in the last five minutes of the second period put the Lions in the driver’s seat.

Nick Connors kicked it off with his second of the game with help from Hummel and McCooeye, and then it was McCooeye with the goal and Connors providing the assist.

Ben Radley counted the Lions fifth and final goal with 35 seconds left in the second period with Luke Byvelds providing the assist.

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions were just 20 seconds away from their ninth win of the season here Friday night, January 16, when Westport Rideaus’ Cam Goldsmith got in their way.

The clock was ticking down on the Friday night match, and with less than a minute to be played the Lions were protecting a 2-1 lead.

It was at 19:40 that Goldsmith, with help from Simon Corriveau, would come up with the goal against Lions goaltender Keiran Weir to tie the game 2-2 and force it into overtime.

After the scoreless overtime play, the shoot out netted no success for Lions shooters Jacob Kendrick, Michael Paquette and Alex Sifton.

The Rideaus starting shooter Dawson Fawcett was also unsuccessful, and it was their shooter number two, Patrick Drouin who would provide the winner and force the Lions to accept the one point for the shoot out loss.

Friday night’s game got rolling with a scoreless first period.

Forty-two seconds into the second period, Johnny Moor put the Rideaus on the scoreboard.

Then at 9:54 the Lions, Alex Sifton struck to tie it with assists provided by Ryan Griffin and Curtis Evans.

The 1-1 tie held until 11:49 of the third period when a Jacob Kendrick goal from Landon Veenstra and Brodie Barkley put the Lions ahead 2-1.

Eight minutes later Goldsmith provided the tying goal to force the overtime.

Sunday, January 18, it was the Lions “pack the rink” day with all area youth 16 years and under invited by the Lions as their guests at the game, courtesy of Horner & Pietersma, Barristers, Solicitors and Notaries, Morrisburg. 

The attending youth were proudly wearing their South Dundas sweaters and a number of free door prizes topped off the day.

Unfortunately, it was not a good day on the ice for the Lions who were doubled 4-2 by the visiting Char-Lan Rebels.

The Rebels went right to work in Sunday’s game to go up 2-0 in the first period on goals by Brian Landry and Liam Vipond.

Jesse Fontaine made it 3-0 on the Rebels’ power play at 6:14 of the second period.

That’s the way it stayed until the Lions found themselves in the first 10 minutes of the third period.

Ryan Griffin put the Lions on the scoreboard on their power play at 3:13 with Dylan Nixon providing the assist.

At 6:53, Eric Evan (from Jordan Smail and Jacob Kendrick) got it to within one goal of the tie, but that was it.

The Lions were unable to put anything more past Rebels goaltender Kevan Dumouchel, while the Rebels got one more from Brennan Markell for the 4-2 win.

Brett Hahn was in the Lions net for the loss.

The Rebels sat out 30 minutes on 11 penalties and the Lions were assessed 28 minutes on 10 infractions

Coming up on Sunday, January 25, the Lions will host the St. Lawrence Division’s first place Casselman Vikings. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

The final games of the regular season will be played the weekend of Friday, February 13-15.

The Vikings are 19 points ahead of the second place Alexandria Glens with 59 points to the Glens 40. The Winchester Hawks, 37 points, are looking solid in third place and are chasing the Glens, while the Rebels 29 points, and the Akwesasne Wolves, 26 points, are battling for the fourth and final playoff position.

This past weekend our ladies’ team of Kathy Killick, Linda Murphy, Penny Charlebois and Liz Locke Doherty competed against seven other foursomes in Ontario playdowns here, for curlers with five or fewer years of curling experience. 

Morrisburg defeated one  of the three R.A. teams in their first match, and followed that up with a victory over Richmond. That put them into the “A” final against a Granite foursome. 

In the “B” final, two R.A. quartets duelled for one trophy, in 10-end matches. Cartwright’s team defeated their clubmates, led by Clarke, for the “B” trophy, while Granite’s Stinson won out over the Morrisburg ladies for the “A” championship. The L.C.A.’s Virginia Cunningham presented pins to all four teams, and the trophies to the victors. Our lounge was crammed with spectators, and as usual, a large number of volunteers worked to make the event run smoothly. Congratulations to our team, and we hope all who qualify will consider entering again next year. We’re proud of you.

At Metcalfe last Saturday two of our ladies’ teams competed in their four-club competition, the Broder. Greta McGann, Kathy Hardy, Betty Locke and Janie Connolly defeated Metcalfe in their morning match, but lost to Russell in the afternoon. In the “A” final, a Russell team emerged victorious.

Susan McIntosh, Kathy Norg, Joanne Baker and Leanne McCooeye dropped their first game against Metcalfe, and after lunch went onto the ice again, emerging victorious over one of the Winchester teams. That put them into the “B” final in the evening after the banquet and the annual meeting. While they curled well, they lost to the other Metcalfe representatives. Well done, ladies!

A team of day ladies were in Ottawa’s Granite club for a bonspiel last week. Greta McGann, Janie Connolly, Penny Charlebois and Joan MacKinnon played Carleton Heights in the morning, and Perth in the afternoon. Our ladies came out on the short end of both tight matches, but nevertheless enjoyed their outing.

Our senior men hosted Prescott last week in a friendly bonspiel. Jack Barkley, Bill Magee, Paul Gunther and Kent Dawley, Peter Zeran, Ron Beaupre, Eric Johnson and Glenn Cougler, as well as John Allison, Rick MacKenzie, Peter Byvelds and Albert DeJong hosted our visitors. Our men won their matches  and this week three more teams head off to Brockville for another friendly bonspiel. Isn’t retirement wonderful?

Our hard-working board of directors meet on a regular basis to plan and oversee the business operations of our club. They work hard on our behalf, and we are grateful for their efforts. They’ve made some changes so far this year. In case you haven’t attended or seen minutes of their meetings, we’ll have highlights from time to time. As per the club’s constitution, the plan is to have members serve two year terms, with two new members elected at the Spring General meeting for continuity. They plan fall meetings as well. 

In closing, we were saddened to learn of the passing of Ian McGillis. He died too young, of cancer. Ian was a former president of our club, assisted behind the scenes on our behalf, and continued to work for the Ontario Curling Association until his death. Our sympathies go out to Nancy and to Ian’s family.

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions were handed a pair of losses on the weekend, both in Gananoque.

Saturday, January 10 they opened the Rideau-St. Lawrence Division Showcase against the Prescott Flyers with a 6-1 loss.

Then on Sunday, January 11, again in Gananoque, they lost to the hometown Islanders 6-4.

Saturday, against the Flyers, Landon Veenstra managed the lone Lions goal at 7:18 of the first period for a 1-0 lead. But that was it.

The Flyers came back for three to carry a 3-1 lead into the second period where another three goals produced the 6-1 win. 

Keiran Weir and newcomer Brett Hahn shared the Lions net duties. Hahn replaces veteran Lions goaltender John Gilmer who recently signed with the Nepean Raiders.

Sunday, the Lions held the Islanders to a 1-1 first period tie, the Lions getting their goal from Eric Evans, unassisted.

The Islanders charged up for a second period showing that produced four unanswered goals against Lions goaltender Brett Hahn.

The Lions found themselves in the third period to make a game of it with three consecutive goals.

Landon Veenstra, unassisted on the Lions power play, got it started just 53 second in and that was followed by a Justin Lefevbre powe-play goal at 2:30.

At 11:11 of the third, Dylan Nixon cut the Islanders advantage to 5-4 with help from Ryan Griffin and Curtis Evans, but that was it.

Brett Arrowsmith scored the final goal of the game at 13:59 of the third period for the 6-4 Gananoque win.

Coming up, the Lions are in Westport this Friday night. They will host the Char-Lan Rebels, Sunday, January 18. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

With a showdown between the top two Atom B House teams in the eastern division of the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League on Saturday in Kemptville, the South Dundas Lions were looking to get the two points to leap frog over Kemptville 1 Panthers into first place. Unfortunately, after falling behind they gave it a good effort but ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 count. 

South Dundas carried the play early. They spent the first two shifts in the Kemptville zone and opened the scoring just 1:23 into the game.  

Left winger Zach Scarbeau moved the puck into the Panthers corner.  Centre Spencer Barclay dug out the loose puck and passed in front of the net to right winger Monty Dejong who knocked in the first goal of the game for a 1-0 Lions lead.  

Play was back and forth, with the Panthers slowly regaining some of that momentum and starting to press for the equalizer.  

With 2:32 left in the first period, Kemptville got one by goaltender Quade Mullin to knot the game at one goal each.  

With 30 seconds left in the period, the Panthers made the rink a lot more uncomfortable with their second to take a 2-1 lead.  

Carrying that emotion, Kemptville went up 3-1 early in the second period with Mullin being injured on the play.

Goaltender Mateo Lacroix was forced to come into the game a few minutes early instead of the half way point, and try to hold the Panther attack at bay to give the Lions a chance to battle back. 

Less than a minute later, the Lions did answer with Spencer Barclay banging home the rebound after Owen Paterson rang one off the iron.  

This brought the Lions within one goal with lots of time left.  

Late in the second period the Lions had their opportunity with the Panthers short-handed two men with one of them being a five minute major.  However, the Kemptville penalty killers thwarted the Lions power play and they escaped with no damage.  

In the third period, the Lions ran out of gas, and they were not able to find the net again. The end result was a 3-2 loss which kept them in second place.  

The Lions next game is Tuesday night in Akwesasne and their next home game is January 25th, a rematch against the Panthers.

The South Dundas Atom B Lions skated into the new year here on Sunday, January and got off to a good start with a 5-1 victory over the hosting South Stormont Selects.

The newly formed “S” line of Sam Connors, Spencer Barclay, and Sean Nicolaassen nearly scored 10 seconds into the game.  Barclay took a pass from Nicolaassen, fired a shot that beat Selects goalie Owen Villaneuve but rang off the post.  

Monty Dejong put the Lions up 1-0 at 1:59 of the first frame when Cam Shaver centered the puck out and he used his backhand to tip the puck into the bottom corner past Villaneuve. 

Mateo Lacroix made a nice kick save a few minutes later to keep the Lions ahead.

The Selects, Weston TerHorst tied the game 1:35 into the second period.  

It appeared that the whistle had been blown for an injured Selects player before the puck crossed the line, but it was ruled a goal after further review.  

The “S” line used a heavy fore check to go up 2-1 at 3:58, this time Nicolaassen scoring from Connors.  

Dryden Buter and James Martens had a key shift when they killed a penalty at the six minute mark of the period, and created more scoring chances than the Selects did on their power play.

Quade Mullin had the save of the game in the third period when he took a hard wrister off the cage without even flinching.  

Zach Scarbeau was robbed by Villaneuve shortly after,  when Shaver passed the puck out from behind the net to Scarbeau who used a quick release.  

The “S” line struck again at 2:18 of the third period when Nicolaassen and Connors broke in two on one.Nicolaassen passed the puck hard over to Connors, who pulled it back and fired a wrist shot to the roof of the Selects net.  

Owen Patterson made it 4-1 about a minute later when he hammered home a rebound from a Buter shot.  

The Lions fifth goal at 4:36 was similar to their fourth. This time Dejong scored on a rebound from a Shaver shot.

The win keeps the South Dundas Atom B Lions in sole possession of second place in the East, and the goaltending duo of Lacroix and Mullin continue to shine having only given up two goals in their last three games.  

The Lions defence of Nate Paulino, Stef Kronstal, Alek Larocque, and Jack McCann have had a helping hand in the goals against department.

Assistant captain, McCann had another solid game on defence, shutting down the opposition while making great passes to get his team out of their zone quickly and safely.

Next game will be on the road against the East division leading Kemptville 1 on Saturday, January 10th.

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions kicked off the new year in Alexandria on Friday night, January 2, and, after a 12-9 loss to the Glens there, they brought their game home to Morrisburg, Saturday night, when they lost to the Winchester Hawks, 4-1.

The Lions now have 11 games left on their regular season schedule. They are holding the St. Lawrence Division’s last place position with 16 points, behind the Char-Lan Rebels who have 21 and the Akwesasne Wolves with 26.

The Casselman Vikings continue to dominate the division with 49 points, while the Alexandria Glens and the Winchester Hawks are battling for second spot with 35 and 31 points respectively.

Friday night at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria, the Lions were first on the scoreboard at 3:42 of the first period with an unassisted goal from Eric Evans.

But that would be it as the Glens went to work to nab Lions goaltender, Keiran Weir for four consecutive goals to go up 4-1.

After Austin Merkley struck for the Glens on their power play at 2:45 of the second period, the Lions found themselves, to come back with three goals and cut the gap to 5-4.

Cole Blanchard got it started on the Lions power play with help from Jacob Kendrick and Dallas Blacksmith, and then it was Blacksmith for two in a row. The first was assisted by Jacob Kendrick and the second by Kendrick and Cole Blanchard on the Lions power play.

The 5-4 count held until 11:47 of the second when Jeffrey Rhainds ignited the Glens for another three, allowing them to carry an 8-4 advantage into the third period.

It was back and forth action and back and forth scoring to start the third period, with the Glens getting three goals and the Lions getting two from Eric Evans and Landon Veenstra, both on the Lions power play. That put the game at 11-6 in the Glens favour.

At 10:14 of the third period, tensions boiled over and when it was all sorted out, 112 minutes in penalties were assessed to effectively lower the head count on the two benches.

At 10:14 the Lions Justin Lefevbre and Landon Veenstra were both assessed five minute fighting majors (in the last 10 minutes of the game) and game misconducts.

From the Glens, Ryan Allen and Pierre-Luc Sabourin got matching penalties and Connor MacLeod was assessed a checking form behind penalty and game misconduct. David Sirois got two, five minute fighting majors, two corresponding game misconducts and a third game misconduct as the third man in. 

In total, the game saw 144 minutes in penalties, 112 of them at 10:14 of the third period.

Back playing hockey, the Lions found the Alexandria net three more times with two goals collected by Dallas Blacksmith for a four-goal game and a single from Jacob Kendrick.

Keiran Weir was credited the Lions loss. He was in net for 36:53 and was relieved by Justin Lalonde. Liam Lascelle saw action for the Glens for 43:07 and Nicholas Maheux saw action for 16:53.

The Lions counted five times on 10 power-play opportunities, and the Glens were successful in two out of four opportunities.

Sunday, the Lions were without the services of Lefevbre and Veenstra as they met the Hawks on home ice for the 4-1 loss.

After a scoreless first period, the Hawks went up 3-0 in the second period on goals by Austin Rothe, Josh Stubbings and  Kris Johnson.

Bryden Van Kessel counted on the Hawks power play, early in the third period, to push it to 4-0, and Dallas Blacksmith spoiled Brandon Lowry’s shutout at 13:32 of the third period with help from Eric Evans and Kevin Dionne.

John Gilmer was in net for the Lions loss.

The Lions are on the road to play two games this weekend against the Rideau Divisions Prescott Flyers and Gananoque Islanders. On Saturday, January 10 they will open the annual Rideau-St. Lawrence Showcase at 9 a.m. in Gananoque against the Rideau Division’s first place Prescott Flyers. This year’s event is hosted by the Islanders.

Ten teams in the Rideau-St. Lawrence Conference will feature five games of hockey, with the opening game at 9 a.m. and the final game (Casselman versus Gananoque) scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

After a pair of holiday losses, the Morrisburg Junior B Lions put together a 3-2 win against the Gananoque Islander to finish off 2014.

The Lions lost 9-5, to the Char-Lan Rebels in Williamstown, on Saturday, December 20, and then to the Akwesasne Wolves on home ice on Sunday, December 21st.

After a break for Christmas they were back on the ice in Morrisburg, on Saturday, December 27 to claim the 3-2 win against the Islanders.

The win, their eighth of the season, leaves them five points behind the St. Lawrence Division’s fifth place Char-Lan Rebels and 10 points back of the fourth place Wolves.

The Casselman Vikings continue to dominate the division at 49 points.

The rest of the division, again this year, falls well back of the Vikings with the Alexandria Glens in second with 31, the Winchester Hawks in third with 29 and the Wolves at 26.

Saturday night in Morrisburg, Michael Paquette opened the Lions scoring with an unassisted goal at 9:37 of the first period.

Tyler Murray evened it at 17:48 of the first period on the Islanders’ power play, but Landon Veenstra gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage at 18:27 with help from Eric Evans and Zach Belaire.

The lone goal of the second period came from the stick of Cole Hamilton allowing the Islanders to tie the game, 2-2.

That set the stage for Cole Blanchard’s winner just 1:04 into the third period. Lions goaltender Keiran Weir dug in and the Lions went to work to protect their slim lead and hold on for the 3-2 win.

Providing the help on Blanchard’s game winner were Eric Evans and Justin Lefevbre.

Sunday, December 21 the Lions lost to the Akwesasne Wolves on home ice 7-3.

The Wolves led 2-1 after the first period and 5-3 heading into the third period.

Derik Dionne and Brock Daze had two goals each for the Wolves, and Chris Wert, Tylor Alguire and Jacob Swamp added singles.

Michael Paquette and the Blacksmith brothers, Dakota and Dallas provided the Lions scoring.

On Saturday, December 20, the Lions were on the road where they were handed a 9-5 loss by the Char-Lan Rebels.

The Rebels built a 5-0 first period lead and led 6-2 after two.

Jamie Lepine and Brennan Markell had two goals each for the Rebels and singles came from the sticks of Jackson Thompson, Matthew Gregoire, Jesse Fontaine, Brian Landry and Jayden Lemire.

Jacob Guillot answered with two goals for the Lions and Paquette, and Lefevbre and Ryan Griffin scored singles.

Coming up, the Lions have a busy weekend schedule to kick off the new year.

On Friday, January 2 they are on the road to take on the Alexandria Glens.

Saturday night, January 3 they host the Winchester Hawks at 7:30 p.m., and then on Sunday, January 4, they are back on the road to play the Akwesasne Wolves.

Holiday hockey hasn’t been the best for the South Dundas Novice B Lions who lost a pair of matches in the last week to the Akwesasne Wolves and the Kemptville Panthers.

On Sunday, December 21st, the Lions were at home to the Panthers for a 2-0 loss, and Sunday, December 27 they travelled to the Wolves home barn where they lost, 4-2.

Gareth Robinson was unbeatable in net on Sunday, December 21st, as the Panthers went to work on the 2-0  win.

They led 1-0 after the first period on a Brandon Taylor goal, and in the second period Rhett McLean made it 2-0. 

Saturday, December 27, the Lions fell behind the Wolves 3-0 in the first period and were unable to recover despite a two goal effort from Ben Radley.

Radley counted in the second period with help from Cooper McCooey and Luke Byvelds, and then again in the third period with help from McCooeye.

The Wolves got first period goals from Kinley Rourke, Myles Cook and Wyatt Landry. Otsirakete Benedict scored in the third period for the 4-0 victory.

The South Dundas Bantam C Lions scored some big results at the 10th Annual Holiday House League tournament played at the Bell Sens Plex on the weekend of December 12-14. In fact, the Lions went all the way to the championship final before they lost out to the Kemptville Panthers, 3-1.

On their way to the final, the high flying Lions scored 19 goals, while goaltender Brett Froats gave up just three goals in four games and collected a pair of shutouts.

The Lions got it rolling on Friday, December 12 with a 4-1 win over the West End Dingoes. Then on Saturday, they put up a 6-0 win over the West End Scorch and a 7-0 win over the South End Moose Head.

Their undefeated record put them in the semi-final game against the Kanata North Stars, and in this game the Lions had their work cut out for them.

After the game ended in a 2-2 tie, two periods of overtime were required before the Lions were able to claim the win, on a goal scored by William Dejong, unassisted, on their power play.

That put them into the championship final against the Kemptville 73s who skated to a 3-1 win.

The Lions got rolling in the tournament against the West End Dingoes. They led 1-0 after the first period and had a 3-1 edge after two.

The scoring was provided by Max Garlough (from Brody Smail and Kendrew Byers), Smail (from Trinity Hanes and Noah Keeler), Kurtis Markell (from Garlough and Hanes) and Hunter Wells (from Byers).

Froats registered his first of two shutouts against the West End Scorch on Saturday, with Brody Smail leading the offence with a three goal performance. Singles came from the sticks of Julenea Barnhartd, William Dejong, Kurtis Markell and Max Garlough in the 7-0 victory.

Providing assists were Dejong, Kendrew Byers, Jacob Byvelds, Thomas Rae and Maddy Hummel.

Shut out number two, 6-0, and the Lions third consecutive victory was over the Southend Mooseheads.

Thomas Rae and Brody Smail had two goals apiece in this one, and Williams Dejong and Kendrew Byers added singles.

Max Garlough provided a pair of assists and Noah Keeler, Trinity Hanes and Smail assisted on one each.

The Lions met head on for some big opposition from the Kanata North Stars in the semi-final.

They went up 1-0 in the first period on a Thomas Rae goal assisted by William Dejong and Trinity Hanes.

After a scoreless second period, the North Stars came charging back with a pair of early third period goals for a 2-1 lead.

Midway into the third period, Julenea Barnhartd (from Dejong) found the spot to even it and that is how it stayed.

There was no scoring in the first overtime period setting the stage for Dejong’s winners, unassisted, while the Lions were on their power play in the second overtime period.

For the championship the Lions met up with the Kemptville Panthers.

They kicked off the scoring 5:50 into the second period with a Hunter Wells goal assisted by Smail and Noah Keeler.

They were able to hold on to their lead until early in the third when Regan Hackett struck for the Panthers to tie it.

Two quick goals from Alexander Rusch gave the Panthers the 3-1 win and the tournament championship.
