This week in The Leader – June 26, 2019 edition

 

Fresh off his B flight win in the Morrisburg Men’s Open on Saturday, Lee Beaupre was the only golfer to break 80 in round two of the club’s qualifying rounds for Valley and Border League teams played Sunday.

Beaupre led Sunday’s field with a 79 to back up his opening round 77 shot on Sunday, June 10 for a 36 hole 156 total.

That gives him a two stroke edge in A flight over Brian McNairn who opened with a 75 and backed it up with an 83 for a 158 total.

One stroke back is Bob Mann who added an 85 Sunday to his opening round 74 for a 159 total.

Rounding out the top A flight players is Shawn Hummell with a 160  (76-84) and Ron Lapier with a 173 total (88-85).

Blake Barry and Kevin Duvall, who shot 78s on June 10, did not play Sunday.

The leader in B flight is Jordie MacDonald 80-82. Kirk Barkley is in second spot on rounds of 85-80 and Charlie Moore is next at 166 with rounds of 85-81.

Sam Harwood (81-88) and Gary Breyer (83-86) are tied with 169 totals.

Next up are Dave McLenaghan and Eric Wemerman tied with 172s.

Scott Corden, who did not play the opening round, shot an 82 on Sunday.

The leader in C flight is Bob Barclay with rounds of 94-91 for a 185 total. Al Patterson is next at 189 with rounds of 94-95 and Barry Henderson holds third place with a 201 total on rounds of 97-104. Wayne Hutt is in fourth spot with a 207 total on rounds of 110-97.

The Border League team calls for the top eight shooters, plus a junior and senior golfer regardless of their class, while the Valley League team includes four players in each of A, B and C flights plus a junior and a senior.

The rounds are also being used for Intersectional team qualifying.

Scoring for the Intersectional teams (regular men’s and senior) is achieved using the Stableford point system.

Bob Mann and Lee Beaupre lead with 56 points each and Brian McNairn and Shawn Hummel are tied with 53 points. Jordie MacDonald has 52 points.

Qualifying for the junior spot for the Valley and Border League teams is Andrew Morris who has posted rounds of 83-84. Twenty of the 35 qualifiers are eligible to play senior.

Patricia met a Wolf. Stella Luna, the fruit bat, made new friends. A busy Bee disrupted a picnic. Some bad sportsmanship spoiled a hockey game. A Lizard helped decide a talent contest. And Mister Man, Mother Nature and Happy dropped in to visit.

The Junior Theatre drama class, held at Upper Canada Playhouse during the week of July 15 to July 19, demonstrated many new drama skills to a very appreciative audience Friday afternoon, July 19. Under the guidance of actor/teacher Kate Veinotte, the 18 children, ages 5-9, took family and friends on a magical journey into the world of stories. 

“Every story needs characters,” Veinotte said. “We made masks to explore new people we might want to get to know. The students learned the techniques for putting on masks on stage, and for adopting a character.”

Each young performer proudly showed off the mask he/she had made and introduced the audience to this “new” person, sometimes quite an unusual person.

Then the class pointed out that every story needs a “beginning, a middle and an end” and of course a “story needs a problem.”

Showing some wonderful creativity, the small performers proved that a story could grow out of even four completely mismatched objects like a hat, a puppet, a piece of clothing and a single hand prop. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the mini plays that the children put together using only these items for inspiration.

Then it was on to two exciting and often hilarious tales, finales to the performance, and tributes  to the lessons learned at theatre school over a very busy week.

Conor Veinotte, a volunteer for the week, explained to the audience that when Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote Peter and the Wolf, he used instruments like the oboe and the flute to introduce his characters.

“Unfortunately,” Conor said, deadpan, “none of your kids can play those instruments, so we call our version, Patricia and the Wolf.”

With their own voices providing the “music” of the story, the children enacted a very unique telling of the classic tale that had the audience thoroughly entertained.

Then the little fruit bat, Stella Luna, fluttered on stage to tell her tale of becoming lost and finding herself in a nest with three fledglings, who definitely thought hanging upside down by your toes was “wierd.” 

However, as Stella Luna and the birds (and quite possibly all the children who enjoyed a wonderful week at Upper Canada Playhouse in junior theatre) learned, “the same or different, we are all friends.”

Although they have their hopes up that there is still plenty of fall golf ahead, members of the Iroquois Golf Club wrapped up their 2014 program with a final scramble tournament and awards banquet on Sunday.

Pro shop manager, Kathy Hardy acted as master of ceremony for the awards banquet which kicked off with a delicious turkey dinner prepared by the club’s food service provider Ida Donnelly.

After that Hardy provided an overview of the season and its winners, and the corresponding  trophies were presented.

Presented the Fred Brouse Memorial trophy by Carol Brouse were ladies champs Nancy Barkley (A flight) and Mary Jean Craig (C flight).

Julie Bennett presented the Dale Simms Memorial trophy to men’s club champs Ed Orlicky (C flight) and Les Craig (D flight). Club champ Mike Tobin and B flight champ Doug Blad were not in attendance.

The Leslie Wright Memorial trophy for the senior nine hole scramble, played August 12, was won by Liz Asselin, Don Poland, Shirley MacLeod and Jamie MacLeod.  

This year’s net club champions were: Sue Sloan and Eric Brawberger (A flight, women’s and men’s), Maurice Kolff (Men’s B flight); Rick MacKenzie and Kathy Pederson (C flight) and Jacques Asselin (Men’s D flight).

Recognized for their holes-in -ones were Sarah Smith and Mike Tobin both on the par three 11th hole and David Thompson on the 13th.

Sunday’s 18 hole closing scramble tournament was won by the team of David Cherry, Ted Styles, Nellie Lightizer and Kathy Hardy. 

The scoring format resulted in a predetermined nine of the 18 holes not used in the scoring. The winning team shot a 66 before the nine holes were eliminated.

The winning low net team of the day consisted of Mike Tobin, Betty McDermid, Allie Cameron and Richard Martel.

Following the presentations, Iroquois Golf Course/Club director Stan Brigham thanked the members for their continued support.

“Every year we try to do better,” he said. “Our goal is to keep our golfers happy, and lately we seem to be turning the table.”

Brigham commended Hardy on the great job she does. “I really appreciate Cathy’s efforts. Her leadership is very important to us.”

Brigham also congratulated food service operator Ida Donnelly on her retirement at the end of the season and wished the best to her daughter Susan who will be taking over and keeping the food operation open throughout the winter.

With the apparent down turn of golf everywhere, Brigham encouraged all members to “keep bugging your friends and your neighbours, telling them how wonderful it is to play here.” 

Managing director and grounds superintendent, Chris Brigham also thanked everyone for their cooperation during the 2014 season. 

“I think the golf course was great this year,” he said. “I had a really great team this year, and I really enjoyed working with them.” 

The Iroquois Golf Course will remain open for play until the end of October. Bookings for holiday banquets are now being accepted  by the food management group.
