Lockmaster’s House being demolished

Demolition of the Lockmaster’s House, which overlooks the Iroquois Lock, is well underway.

The house is on property administered by the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation and was until the early 90s used as a home for the Lockmaster. But it has been decades since anyone has inhabited the place.

This is an original pre-Seaway project home that was never moved. Andrew Bogora, communications officer for the SLSMC said there is no other option but to demolish the building. He said that about five or six years ago efforts were undertaken to reach out to a number of local stakeholder groups to come up with a plan for the building. However none of the efforts/suggestions were viable.

The building had been used for a time by the former DIAMONDS group and served as a gallery and tea room. Its most recent use was by South Dundas Fire and Emergency Services for training exercises.

Bogora said that the demolition process is expected to be an extended one because of the need for careful removal of the legacy materials.
