CORNWALL – The Seaway Spartans junior basketball team kicked off the second half of their 2018-19 season with a 50-29 loss to the St. Joe’s Panthers in Cornwall January 7th.
St. Joe’s started the game scoring a three-pointer from just outside the line. Seaway’s defence frustrated St. Joe’s midcourt and the team was able to capitalize on it. Seaway trailed St. Joe’s 9-4 after the first quarter.
By the midway mark of the second quarter, the Spartans had taken a 16-15 lead over the Panthers. A quick pair of baskets by St. Joe’s a minute before halftime put them back in the lead. St. Joe’s led Seaway 19-16 at halftime. Seaway out shot St. Joe’s 12-10 in the quarter.
By the third quarter, the Panthers had pulled ahead by 13 points, scoring 17 points to the Spartans’ seven points. Technical fouls defending started to run against the Spartans in their end.
A quick push by Seaway in the opening minute of the fourth forced St. Joe’s to call a time out to regroup. The Panthers locked down their defence after that, allowing only one Seaway basket in the final seven minutes of the game. St. Joe’s put up 14 more points to win 50-29.
Aodhan Lowson and Ben Lapier each put up nine points for the Spartans. The loss drops the junior Spartans to eighth in the county league standings. They play a doubleheader against Tagwi and La Citadelle on January 11th.
