
MORRISBURG – The South Dundas Lions (16-3-0) picked up another pair of home-ice wins this past week to regain first place in the Major-Midget B Rep league. Going into the week, the Lions trailed the South Grenville Rangers by one point for top spot in the league.
The Lions first took on the Leeds Chargers (3-19-1) February 15th. Leeds took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the first period when Hayden Gavin (Clay Blanchard) scored on Lions goalie Mason McLeod. Nolan Brown (Ben Fingler, Dean Lapier) tied the game six minutes later for South Dundas.
A minute later, Justin Shay (Lucas Bennis, Brody Smail) put the Lions into the lead. Brown (Colin Minish, Lapier) made it 3-1 less than two minutes later.
With four minutes remaining in the first period, Shay (Bennis, McLeod) extended the Lions’ lead to 4-1. Mason Gavin cut the Lions’ lead by one with 36 seconds left in the period. Lions led the Chargers 4-2 heading into the second period.
South Dundas picked up two goals in the second period. First Jonah Bennis (Nicholas Brugmans) scored five minutes into the period, followed by Brugmans (Fingler, Curtis Barkley) with two minutes left in the period. Leeds returned the favour seconds later when Gavin (Blanchard) cut the Lions lead by one. The Lions led the Chargers 6-3 as the teams entered the third period.
The teams traded goals starting six minutes into the third period. First Blanchard (Gavin, Jack Lawrence) scored for Leeds. A minute later, Shay scored unassisted for the Lions. Twenty seconds later, Kaleb McCulloch (Lawrence) scored for the Chargers. Then Bennis(Smail, Bennis) scored 30 seconds later for the Lions. Midway through the third period, the Lions led the Chargers 8-5.
Brugmans and Fingler each added a goal in the final minutes of the game, while the Chargers scored once. South Dundas defeated Leeds 10-6. McLeod claimed the win in net for the Lions, and a point for his assist in the game.
The team then took on the Cornwall Colts February 17th with a less raucous result.
Minish (Brown) put the Lions on the scoreboard late in the first period to give the team a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Fingler (Brugmans, Shay) made it a 2-0 game.
South Dundas went up 3-0 after Jonah Bennis’ unassisted goal five minutes into the second period. Four minutes later, Bennis (Barkley, Minish) scored again, extending the Lions lead to 4-0 over the Colts. Cornwall made several attempts in South Dundas’ end but couldn’t get past McLeod between the pipes.
Late in the second, Fingler scored again (Bennis, Brady Smith) to make it 5-0 as the teams entered the third period.
Less than a minute into the period, Nolan Shane spoilt the Lions’ shutout attempt, beating Sam Waytowich, who took over for McLeod in net midway through the second period. Lapier (unassisted) moved in six minutes later on a breakaway to score the final goal of the game. Lions won 6-1 over the Colts.
The pair of wins gave South Dundas four points in the standings, allowing the team to retake the top spot in the league.
South Dundas will visit the South Grenville Rangers (16-3-3) in Prescott February 20th. A win will give the Lions a three-point lead over the Rangers, with the Lions still having a game in hand.
The Lions host the Colts again February 22nd at the Morrisburg Arena.
