Spartan girls lose two on the ice

WILLIAMSTOWN – After picking up their first win of the season in Morrisburg January 9th, the Seaway Spartans girls hockey team travelled to Williamstown February 5th for the third tournament day in the SDG county girls high school hockey league.

The Spartans took on the Tagwi Warriors in their first match of the day.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead late in the first period after a goal by Makenna Brownlee (Ayleisha Khan, Mariah Bougie) on Spartans goalie Michaela Mustard.

Tagwi held the lead until midway through the second period when Chloe Hart (Julenea Barnhartd, Anna Henderson) tied the game for Seaway.

The teams remained tied 1-1 until Warriors forward Emily Norman (Gillian Kippen) scored the game winning goal with 47 seconds left in the game. Seaway lost their first game of the day to Tagwi 2-1.

Later in the day, the Spartans faced off against the La Citadelle Patriotes.

The Patriotes scored half way through the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Madison Besner had the unassisted goal for La Citadelle. Sarah-Michelle Tremblay made it 2-0 for the Patriotes with her unassisted goal midway through the second period. Emilie Lalancette made it 3-0 Patriotes with 2:39 left in the game.

Seaway scored two back-to-back goals 50 seconds apart in the final minutes of the game. First Shayna Van Beilen (Barnhartd) put the Spartans on the scoreboard with 1:30 left in the game. Then Barnhartd’s goal (Cassidy Bilmer) cut the Patriotes lead to one goal. The Patriotes held on to beat the Spartans by a score of 3-2.

Seaway drops to a record of one win and five losses for sixth place in the league. The Spartans have two more games left in the regular season, when they take on the Char-Lan Crusaders and St. Joe’s Panthers February 15th.
