Ten from South Dundas make Jr. C Lions roster

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions put their first stroke in the win column here Sunday afternoon when they rallied for a three-goal, third period to defeat the visiting Char-Lan Rebels, 4-2.

It was a very close, entertaining game that saw the Lions on the scoreboard first with a first period goal at 8:52 from Jacob Kendrick assisted by Cole Blanchard and Michael Paquette.

The Lions l-0 lead lasted until the last minutes of the second period when the Rebels Jeremy McFarlane counted against goaltender John Gilmer to even it at 1-1 heading into the third period.

Well past the halfway mark of the third period, Jeremy McFarlane, on the power play, put the Rebels ahead for the first time in the game. But they were unable to hang on.

The Lions got an unassisted power play goal at 14:17 from Eric Evans and that got them rolling for a second counter just 42 seconds later from Paquette (assisted by Justin Rutley).

The Lions then went to work to hold on to their 3-2 advantage and, with Gilmer unbeatable in net, they were successful.

The Lions fourth and final goal was scored by Justin Lefebvre (from Dallas Blacksmith) with 55 seconds left on the clock.

“The boys never gave up and it was a really good effort,” said coach Mark Evans of Sunday’s win.

Evans says that keeping the games close in the early going is going to be key for the Lions who have a very young squad this year. “They will learn by experience,” he said.

While the game was extremely tight in the first two periods, Evans says, “Our defence played well, but we’ve seen them play better. John Gilmer had a good game in net. He controlled the rebounds really well and made some key saves.”

While Evans says the win indeed felt good for everyone, he and assistant coach Shawn Blanchard are concentrating on getting everyone on the same system.

“That is what we are trying to stress at this point. They have been told some very different things already from what they have learned in minor hockey.”

“We are just focussing on one period at a time.”

Sunday’s game saw just 16 minor penalties, and they were evenly split between the two.

Kevin Dumouchel was in net for the Rebels loss. He gave up the four goals on 38 Lions shots, while Gilmer gave up the two Rebels goals on 29 shots.

Coming up the Lions have a very busy weekend ahead.

This Friday night they are on the road to Winchester to take on the Hawks. Game time is 8:15. The Lions have met the Hawks once this year and lost 7-4, so they will be looking to even it out.

Then on Saturday night, October 4 and Sunday, October 5 they have a pair of home games. Alexandria is in town for a 7:30 p.m. start Saturday night and Sunday it’s Akwesasne at 2:30 p.m.

Six games of basketball ushered in the boys basketball season at Seaway last Wednesday, and when the final basket dropped it was the Spartans coming out on top of their four matches.

At the senior level, the Spartans posted victories over Tagwi Warriors, 46-42 and Rothwell-Osnabruck (RO) Lancers, 29-25. 

The Junior Spartans ran away with both of their games, 34-17 over Tagwi and 43-15 over Rothwell-Osnabruck.

The two Seaway teams are coached by Mark Lewis who was pleased with the day’s results considering the Spartans had gone 1-3 in an exhibition tournament a week earlier.

“We do have a lot of work to do, but the guys seem very committed to improving so that is promising,” says Lewis.

In other action, Tagwi picked up wins at the Senior level over RO, 51-46 and at the Junior level over RO, 30-24.

Under this year’s format, the SD&G boys basketball schedules are set up as tri-meets with three schools, at both the senior and junior levels, competing in the one day, six-game events. Each school will compete in three tri-meets, giving each team six game seasons.

Wednesday, the Junior Spartans got it rolling with a 34-17 win over the Tagwi Warriors.

Dillan Sullivan had a big game as he dropped 17 of the Spartans points.  Backing him was Clay Dumoulin with 11 points. Travis Barkley added two baskets and Randy Keller dropped a single.

H. Legue was the top Tagwi shooter with six points.

In their second game, the Spartans turned it up a notch to nab the Lancers for a 43-15 victory.

Again, Dillan Sullivan led the Spartan attack, this time accounting for 18 of their points, before retiring to the bench for the third quarter.

Travis Barkley was good for eight points and Randy Keller added seven. Casey Dean, Cal Bilmer and Griffin Patterson all added to the point total.

C. Bazinet was the top Lancers shooter.

“We are starting three grade 9 students in Griffin Patterson, Randy Keller and Travis Barkley,” says Lewis. “Clay Dumoulin and Dillan Sullivan round out the starting five. We are raw and have lots to learn, but we have been practicing three mornings a week at 6 a.m. and they all seem to make it, so I know their desire to improve is there.”

The Senior Spartans got rolling with a 46-42 win over Tagwi.

AJ Jarvis and Zack Frawley led the Spartans with nine points apiece and Tanner Hummel contributed eight. Answering for Tagwi were Andrew Brambilla and Brett Ouderkirk each with none points.

In game two against Rothwell-Osnabruck, Tanner Hummel put together a 10 point effort in the 29-25 win. AJ Jarvis and Luke Strader added six points each and Devon Miller pocketed four.

Casey Winters answered with eight for the Lancers, Kale Wall had six, and Logan Kennedy five.

“The senior boys are doing extraordinarily well considering only two of them played last year. AJ Jarvis and Zack Frawley played last year in the very shortened season we had and none of the others have played for two years.”

“Again they are working hard and being very keen to improve. It will certainly be a process, but one that hopefully will end up with them developing into solid players and citizens in our community.”

Lewis says the two teams have been working on improving their defensive skills and he was pleased with what he saw Wednesday. “They were able to hold the other teams down and in spite of our offensive struggles, they kept the other teams from scoring too much. The offense will come, but will take a bit longer to gel. We have to do a better job of taking care of the ball as we had far too many turnovers. Better teams will take advantage of this and will hurt us down the road.”

Ten athletes from a team of 60 that represented District 8 at the Ontario Summer Senior Games in Brampton, August 15-16, returned home bearing medals and among them was Morrisburg golfer Monique Patenaude.

Patenaude collected a silver medal in the ladies A flight division with a 36 hole net score of 160.

On the opening day the 21 handicapper shot a 103 for an 82 net and on the second round she posted a 99 (78 net) on what she described as a “very beautiful, but very difficult Masters course at the Lion Head Golf and Country Club.

The Masters Course plays to 5,392 yards from the ladies red tees and its difficulty is indicated through its slope rating of 131.

“It was probably one of the nicest courses I have ever played,” said  Patenaude who, as an avid golfer, has played her share of courses, and “probably one of the hardest courses I have ever played.”

“There were a lot of bunkers and long rough. On most holes, from 130 yards in, you had to carry rough or sand traps. That’s why I found it so difficult. I am not a long ball hitter.”

Patenaude said that generally the scores were high for both the men’s and women’s field.

The women’s A flight win went in a 36 hole net score of 150 (a pair of 75 nets) to Loretta Czernis.

While Patenaude was working her way to the A flight silver medal, Cedar Glen golfer, Elise Muir of Long Sault claimed a gold medal in B flight.

With that win Muir qualified for the Summer Nationals coming up in 2014.

Patenaude and Muir began their journey to the provincial championship  in a qualifier organized by Ann Cook at Cedar Glen.

“We had about 50 or so players for the District 8 qualifier,” said Patenaude who with husband Andy, has now joined the Senior Games board of directors for this area. District 8 covers Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Prescott-Russell and Akwesasne. 

The qualifier included A and B flights and a Calloway scored division.

In A flight, Patenaude won gold with a 90, Lynn Shaw was second and Susan McIntosh scored a Bronze Medal. Shaw and McIntosh are both  Cedar Glen members.

Muir won B flight and Lise Steinburg (Morrisburg) was the Callaway winner.

The winners in each category advanced to the provincial although Steinburg was unable to attend and was replaced by silver medallist Pam McTear.

Patenaude has been competing in the seniors games (golf) for several years and says it is a wonderful experience.  The games are always well run and you meet a lot of people.

“I recommend getting involved in the games to anybody,” says Patenaude.

In order to participate athletes must pay a $12 yearly membership fee and that covers both summer and winter events.

In addition to golf, summer events include bid euchre, bocce, bowling, contract bridge, cribbage, cycling, darts, shuffleboard, lawn bowling, pickleball, slo-pitch, swimming, tennis and walking. Some events use prediction times.

Other District 8 medallists were Beverley Ray and Jackie Merpaw of Cornwall-gold in Cribbage; Susan Kersley (65 plus) and Donna Magher (55 plus) both of Williamstown-bronze medals in swimming; Murray MacLeod and Michel Cadieux of Cornwall -bronze in men’s 55 plus pickleball doubles; and Linda and Graham Vickers of Alexandria who won silver and bronze respectively in 55 plus prediction cycling.

With the summer games now over, the local executive of the Ontario Senior Games Association is busy making plans for the upcoming winter games. Gold medal winners in the local games will qualify to go to Huntsville in February for the Ontario 55 plus Winter Games (previously Winterfest).

The local senior games committee is also planning to host the Eastern Ontario Regional Games next August when over 600 competitors from Eastern Ontario will take part in 15 different events.
