U13 Girls defeat Ottawa Internationals

The Seaway Kickers U13 Girls team defeated the Ottawa Royals G2 team 4-2 at the Merkley Soccer Fields in Iroquois, on June 18. 

Ottawa claimed the lead early in the first half with back-to-back goals, making it 2-0. Late in the first half, Kicker Helene Bygott scored, with Sydney Piquette landing the tying goal moments later. At half-time, the score was 2-2. 

A goaltending change at half-time led to no further scoring by Ottawa. 

Early in the second half Piquette scored her second of the night, giving Seaway a 3-2 lead. Kiana Fredette scored on a penalty kick for added insurance. Final score, Seaway 4-Ottawa Internationals 2. 

They visit the Ottawa Royals G3 team at Bruff Park in Ottawa June 24. 

Kickers U13M team continues undefeated season

The U13 Mixed team hosted the Ottawa Internationals M1 team in Iroquois June 20. Scoring started early with a Seaway goal by David Swerdfeger, low and in the left corner. 

Moments later, Seaway’s Conner Dumoulin planted a strong shot in net, for a 2-0 Seaway advantage. 

Late in the first half, Ottawa landed a successful shot on Seaway goalie Shawn Dowson, to cut the Seaway lead to 2-1 at the half. 

Early in the second half, Seaway’s John Coligan netted a hard shot in the top right corner of the goal. 

Kurt Cutler and Jacob Byvelds finished it off giving the Kickers the 5-1 win.

The Kickers U13 Mixed team season record is six wins, no losses and no ties. They host the Nepean City’s M4 team in Iroquois, June 27. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

U15 Girls lose to Ottawa

The Seaway Kickers U15 Girls team lost to the Ottawa Royals G2 team, 2-1, at St. Joseph’s High School in Nepean on June 19. Jessica Ferguson scored for Seaway. 

The U15 Girls visit the Nepean HotSpurs G1 team on June 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Des Laurier High School in Nepean.

Another U18 Girls win

The Seaway Kickers U18 Girls team defeated Nepean City on June 17 in the second game of a home and home series, 6-1. 

Leslie-Ann Tupper scored four goals in the back-to-back rout. The U18 girls visit the Ottawa Internationals on June 24 at Hillcrest High School in Ottawa.

”Everyone rode really great,” says Sarabeau Stables owner Sandy Marcellus of her six riders who represented her stable at the Ontario Trillium Championship at the Caledon Equestrian Park at Palgrave, Ontario, September 5-9. 

In just her second season of operation, Marcellus has been impressed with the steady improvement of her riders, which resulted in four qualifiers for the provincial final last year, and six this year.

“We brought home a few ribbons,” says Marcellus. “We did well.”

Leading the riders was Marcellus’ daughter Rayanna.

Riding Morganfield, an experienced 18 year old thoroughbred gelding, Rayanna picked up third place ribbons in the Children’s Medal and A Equitation Over Fences categories.

“Both Morganfield and Rayanna rode well They were tough divisions,” said Sarabeau trainer  Cheryl Levere.

Then on Piccolini, a 10 year old large Arabian Welsh pony, Rayanna placed sixth in the Hunter Classic which saw over 84 competitors.

Levere explains that the Classic feature more jumps and more difficult turns. “It tests both horse and rider. A sixth place finish was really good. I didn’t really expect she would do that well, mostly because of the way Piccolini was showing before that. It was really good. The pony pulled  it together and Rayanna pulled it together.”

“Last year they had a complete melt down and that was scarey to watch.”

Rayanna added that “I was really happy. I knew I had a good ride, but I didn’t expect my score.”

Also riding well was Troy Webb, 14, of Ingleside on Morganfield. In just his second year of riding, and his first experience at such a high level of competition, Webb had fifth and 10th place finished in Modified Children’s out of 48 competitors.

“Troy had a good classic round,” says Levere. “He rode the way we planned,” and that was in spite of the heavy rain that marked the day.

Levere describes 14 year old Serena Armstrong’s ride  on My Time to Shine in the Medium Pony Hunter division as “really, really good. It was Serena’s first year doing Hunter and the pony’s first show season. They pulled it together and they did the job.”

The job resulted in a 10th place finish in Medium Pony Hunter.

Also riding was big sister Brianna on Shez Justa Dream. Brianna picked herself up after a fall (and a resulting trip to the hospital) during her Children’s Hunter ride to complete her ride in Children’s Classic.

“Brianna came back, She was sore but she got on the horse and did her Classic,” said  Levere. “Shez Justa Dream is a small horse and at Caledon, the lines are there for bigger horses, so the horse just physically couldn’t do it.”

“When you get to Trillium, the jumps are more difficult. They are wider and scarier. There is no air anywhere. Shez Just a Dream did great all year and she made a couple of the shorter lines up there.”

Also riding for Sarabeau was Julie Julien of Cornwall on Palakari. Although Julien did not return home with a ribbon, in either Low Hunter or Adult Equitation Over Fences, “they rode great. Julie gets the jitters and they got the better of her. But the last day she had the best ride she’s had all year. So she finished off the season really well.”

Also riding Palakari was Jeana Lamothe, 14, of Ingleside in Modified Children’s. 

“Jeana had a great round. At times she was nervous but at times Pall wasn’t listening. Pal doesn’t like mud. He’s a bit of a wuss. And the second day there was a lot of mud and it got the better of them. Their first round that day was a disaster, but for their second round they pulled it together. They didn’t place but Jeana rode really well.”

While most racers from the Northeast put the 2011 season to rest long ago, and are waiting out a long cold winter, Luke Whitteker has stretched his season right through to the end of the 2011 calendar year.  

The 18-year-old Iroquois youth’s involvement in the Race 101 program has opened plenty of doors of opportunity this year. Whitteker has made several trips to North Carolina to attend classes, plus weekly online seminars that were also part of the curriculum for Race 101.  One of the program was the opportunity to run laps at the famous Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, North Carolina.

Aside from the on track portion of the Race 101 program, and the wealth of knowledge that he learned over the course of the year, Whitteker has also enjoyed meeting new people, and making several connections that will last a lifetime with prominent people in the racing community. 

As a group, some of the Race 101 staff, and several of this year students attended the annual P.R.I. (Performance Racing Industry) Trade Show that was held in Orlando, Florida recently.   The objective of attending this show was to learn, and also to interact with other people from the racing community,

The P.R.I. Trade show hosts over 1000 racing related vendors, and takes in sellers from all over the United States, Canada and many other countries.  The opportunity to interact with people from other forms of racing at a large trade show such as this is phenomenal.

“The PRI show was well worth the time,” says Whitteker.  “I would recommend any racer that is looking to get a jump start for the upcoming season or learn more about new and up and coming products to check out similar expos. I made a lot of great new connections and learned a lot about products available to the dirt racing market”.

Whitteker also had other exciting events in November, as he was able to take to the track in the Race 101 house car at the famed Hickory Motor Speedway.  

This was the first time Luke ever raced a car on pavement, and posted very consistent lap times that were comparable to other students with pavement experience.  The Race 101 premiere driver will be chosen in January when the class returns to North Carolina for their graduation.

“We had an awesome practice session with Tony Blanchard from Race 101,” says Whitteker.  “Asphalt racing is a lot of fun. It is very comparable to the go-kart racing that we did earlier in my career, and we enjoyed a lot of success with that.”

Whitteker also attended the annual Parts Peddler trade show in Syracuse during the month of November.  The show is similar in nature to the P.R.I. Trade Show, only more scaled down, and typically more specific to the Northeast region.

Also the Whitteker Motorsports team participated in the annual Christmas Parade along the streets of Morrisburg.  The Whitteker team prepared a float that included the race car, as well as a Christmas tree, and several Christmas decorations.

“I’d like to thank everyone that helped put the float together and represent Whitteker Motorsports in Morrisburg’s annual Christmas parade,” says Whitteker.  “I hope every one appreciates the hard work that was put into the float as much as I do.”
