Morrisburg Canada Day kids games results

Cedar Glen golfer, Kurtis Barkley shot a one under par 69 here Saturday, to successfully defend his Morrisburg Men’s Open title for the fourth consecutive year.

The 24 year old, Williamsburg golfer, who this year is playing out of both Cedar Glen and Upper Canada, recently qualified in the Chase the Dream event with a three-over-par 75 shot at Upper Canada.

At the qualifier he wasn’t satisfied with his putting, so he has since changed to a belly putter, and the results showed up in the 69 he shot at Morrisburg, on Saturday.

The Morrisburg course is experiencing major issues with several greens which made Saturday’s putting difficult for the 63 golfers.

“I had 31 putts today, which is below my average,” said Barkley who opened his round with a pair of bogies. Although the par five first hole is one of the troubled Morrisburg greens, Barkley said he couldn’t fault the green for the opening six. “It was actually a one-putt bogie,” he said with a laugh. The bogie four on the par three second hole, also not in good condition, was, however, the result of a three putt.

After that the talented young golfer charged back with three consecutive birdies to go to one under and that’s how he finished it on the front, with a one under 34.

On the back, Barkley stayed at one under until a three putt on the par five 15th pushed him to even.

He got the stroke back with a birdie on the par three 17th and finished the round at 69 for his fourth consecutive championship.

Next up in the 19-player A flight was Rob Kimmerly (Prescott) with a 73. Upper Canada golfer, Lance Lepage was third with a 74 and Matt Rochon was next at 75.

Morrisburg’s Kevin Duvall shot a 76 which gave him the A field’s low net with a 67, and Dave Saunders (Brockville) was next with a 77. The final two golfers to break 80, in A flight, were Peter Gilder (Brockville) and Brett Corlyon (Cornwall) with 79s.

Sixty-three golfers competed in three flights in this year’s men’s open.

The top shooter in B flight, for the second consecutive year, was Lee Beaupre (Morrisburg) with a 77. Last year Beaupre shot a 78 to tie for the top B flight position but lost in a playoff.

This year he took the title by a single stroke over Bruce Perrin of Prescott. The two were the only B flight shooters to break 80.

Coming in with an 80 for third place was Scott Hodgson of Morrisburg. Eric Wemerman, Morrisburg and Randy Mullin, Iroquois were next with 81s. Wemerman’s 81 gave him a net score of 63 for the flight’s low net win.

Greg Millard (Morrisburg) and Allan McNairn (Upper Canada) were next up, tied with 83s.

For the second consecutive year, a playoff was required to determine the C flight winner. Jason Broad and Dan McLelland, both of Morrisburg, shot 87s for the tie and the latter took the win in sudden death play.

Doug Warner (Morrisburg) was next up with an 88 and after that, the scores went into the 90s with Sean Boulerice and Steve Boucher (both Morrisburg) tied with 91s.

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions reached up, way up from the bottom of the St. Lawrence Division of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey league on Sunday, January 25, to nab the first place Casselman Vikings for a 7-6 overtime win.

The Lions were aided 2:04 into the overtime period when Vikings Harrison Wood drew a two minute slashing period. That set the stage for the Lions power-play winner from the stick of Jacob Kendrick, assisted by Eric Evans and Tanner Hummel at 3:48. 

It was the ninth win of the season for the Lions and the first overtime loss for the Casselman Vikings who lead the St. Lawrence Division with 64 points. In 35 games the Vikings have lost just two games (one to the Lions), had one loss in a shoot out and now have one loss in overtime. 

They have pulled well away from the rest of the division with 64 points. The Alexandria Glens are in second spot with 45 points, the Winchester Hawks have 39 and the Char-Lan Rebels 29.

The Akwesasne Wolves, with 28 points, are on the heels of the Rebels for the fourth and final playoff spot, and the Lions are way back in the standings with their 19. 

The Lions were solid out of the gate on Sunday, with goals from by Dylan Nixon (from Jordan Smail and Landon Veenstra) at 2:37 of the first period and Jacob Guilliot (from Eric Evans and Ryan Griffin) on the Lions power play at 5:54.

They maintained their lead until 15:25 of the frame when Taylor Widenmaier got one past Keiran Weir to close the gap to 2-1.

But the Lions came charging right back with a Michael Paquette goal assisted by Brodie Barkley and Jacob Kendrick at 17:07.

The second period  went to the Vikings who counted two unanswered goals to tie it 3-3. Harrison Wood made it 3-2 at 5:17 and Luc Forget counted on the Vikings power play at 7:10.

The 3-3 tie held until 4:24 of the third period when Kendrick pushed the Lions ahead with help from Justin Lefevbre and Guillot.

At 6:42 Cole Fowler, assisted by Landon Veenstra and Evans put the Lions up 5-3.

Grant Hebert cut the gap to one at 7:06, but again the Lions were able to maintain their two goal edge with a Lefevbre power-play goal assisted by Brodie Barkley and Smail at 9:09 of the third.

The Lions held on until 18:51 when the Vikings, opting for the extra attacker, got one back from the stick of Hebert to cut the gap to 6-5.

The Vikings, again with goaltender Reilly Tondreau out of the net in favour of the extra attacker, tied the game 6-6 at 19:22 to force the overtime.

The Lions power play was working well in the game as they were successful in three out of four opportunities. The Vikings managed only one goal on their power play in five opportunities.

The Vikings sat on 12 minutes in penalties on six infractions and the Lions were assessed 34 minutes on nine infractions. 

Coming up this Thursday, January 29, the Lions are on the road for a make up game against the Akwesasne Wolves. Friday night, January 30, they are in Winchester to take on the Hawks, and Saturday night, January 31 they will host the Alexandria Glens. Game time is 7 p.m.

Gretta McGann entered a team in the women’s Navy bonspiel in Ottawa last week. With her were Alice Thompson, Yvonne Mabo and Claire Locke. They dropped their first match to a foursome from the Ottawa R.A. Centre, and after a fine lunch, tackled a Perth quartet. It was a good game, and our folks emerged victorious.

Their scores put them in third place on the day, and some prizes were available. The two teams ahead of them were tied, and, unable to break the tie, the organizers split the first and second place money for them. 

The skip of one of the teams had fallen in the first end of their initial match, and was unable to continue. When the three curlers finished the end, they decided to forfeit their match, but the organizers found them a replacement. Good thing they kept playing!

One of our senior teams is in Metcalfe this week for that club’s invitational bonspiel. We’ll have the results next time. Also our men host three Cornwall senior teams in a return friendly match this Friday, and we’ll have those results for you

Alice Thompson and her committee are hosting a women’s invitational bonspiel this week. Same story concerning reporting there. 

Teams from Navan, Prescott, Maxville, City View, Russell, two from Cornwall, Lancaster, Kemptville, Alexandria, and Ottawa’s R.A. Centre are here. One club had trouble getting a team together, so our Gretta McGann volunteered to fill in with three other local ladies. 

As always, the organizers have an all-volunteer group to staff the kitchen, the bar, and prepare the ice. And to maximize profits for our club on the day, all of the food has been prepared and donated by the local women.

At time of writing, there are still a few openings for the club bonspiel this Saturday. It’s a fund raiser to support getting a new carpet for the club. Looks like a nice event, with a great lunch provided. If there’s still room on Wednesday, why not sign up for what promises to be a very pleasant day.

Coming up later this month are the friendly bonspiel for Saturday, December 17, and the two-day OCA competition for senior curlers, Friday and Saturday, December 23 and 24. Hope we have some local teams entered!

Ian Wilson and family members are looking after the Little Rocks program again this year. The 16 curlers practice on Monday nights, and will be competing in bonspiels in the new year. They are also hosting teams from Metcalfe, Russell and Winchester in their Big Four tournament

For those aspiring to greater things on the ice, last weekend could have been an inspiration, as TSN covered the semi-finals and finals for the men’s and women’s Canada Cup. Jennifer Jones won the title for the ladies, defeating Chelsea Carey, and Kevin Martin edged Glenn Howard on the men’s side. Besides the money and the prestige, the winners guaranteed themselves a place in the “curling sweepstakes” leading to qualifying for the Olympics.
