The Seaway Surge Peewee baseball team won five of six games in the Kanata Cubs tournament over the weekend, but lost in the finals to the Stittsville Axemen 12-7.
The boys had played five games of nearly flawless ball prior to the final; but in their 6th game in less than 48 hours, played in incredibly warm temperatures, they simply ran out of steam. The hot bats dried up and errors crept into their play.
In round robin play leading to Sunday, the Surge played four games and dominated the opposition, out scoring them 66 to 21. Every player contributed to the lopsided victories.
Some of the highlights were a 300 foot home run by Ethan Marion (Kemptville), his first of three home runs on the weekend; a grand-slam home run by Mike Edwards (Cornwall); and two home runs by Adam Sterkenburg (Kemptville) and Ben Lapier (Williamsburg). The offence was backed by solid performances from the entire pitching staff and some great defensive plays in the field.
In Sunday’s semi-final, the Surge emerged as winners versus the Kanata Cubs in a thrilling 9-8 victory. Simon Piche (Kemptville) gave up a 3-run home run in the top of the last inning allowing Kanata back in the game, but, in the bottom of the inning, hit a walk-off single to drive in the winning run.
Although the Seaway Surge Peewees lost in the finals, it was a great weekend of ball and many coaches from the area commented on the quality of the squad in their inaugural season.
