$98,000 to popular UCV event

Ontario is investing $15.3 million to support 200 festivals and events across the province, and almost $100,000 of that investment will be coming to Upper Canada Village for Pumkinferno.

The funding announcement was made April 18, by Michael Coteau, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, in Peterborough.

This investment will help organizers to enhance their programs, activities and services so they can attract more tourists and increase visitor spending.

Pumpkinferno will receive $98,000.

With over 140,000 tourists having visited Pumpkinferno which features over 6,000 artistically carved pumpkins, Celebrate Ontario features this event as one of its success stories.

Last year over 35,000 visitors attended the month-long event, representing a 10 per cent increase from the previous year.

The appeal of the event, which has created a vital new shoulder season of tourism activity in Eastern Ontario, had led to sister events in Sudbury and Penetanguishene.

The St. Lawrence Parks Commission also received funds ($66,162) for Fort Fright in Kingston.

Among the 200 recipients were several other festivals across the region, among them: Kemptville Live Music Festival ($63,667), The Spencerville Stampede ($9,400), Brockville Ribfest ($9,630), Festival de la Curd ($67,500), South Mountain Fair ($47,913) and Brockville Tall Ships Festival ($33,412).

“Ontario is home to many unique and diverse festivals and events that showcase our province and attract visitors from all over the world. I’m proud that through Celebrate Ontario, our government continues to support this vibrant sector,” said Coteau.

“Our investment will help festivals and events offer new and expanded experiences that will support local economic growth, create jobs and draw tourists to communities across the province.”

“Festivals and events are a major contributor to the economy in Ontario communities. With hundreds of festivals taking place each year, they not only drive tourism but support tens of thousands of jobs each year. Support from the Province of Ontario through Celebrate Ontario helps festivals and events to provide great experiences for visitors to Ontario,” said Kathrin Delutis, chief executive officer, Festivals and Events Ontario.
