The South Grenville B1 Rangers claimed the Upper Canada Midget B House League’s East Division championship in two straight games, wrapping it up here Monday night, with a 7-4 decision.
The series kicked off in Prescott, on Sunday, March 6, with a 5-3 victory which gave the Rangers the two-point lead in the four-point championship series.
Monday night’s loss also wrapped up a fantastic playoff run by the South Dundas 1 Lions coached by Jeff VanMoorsel.
The Lions, who finished in fifth place in the seven team East Division, played some solid, competitive playoff hockey that saw them upset the fourth place Leeds team in their first series, and the second place North Dundas #1 Demons in the semi-final series.
Certainly a season finale for the Lions to be proud of.
Unfortunately, it all came to an end here Monday night, against the very fast skating and very strong Rangers team.
For the first two periods, the Lions stayed in the game. They held a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by Tyler Nelson and Kody Arsenault. After two periods, it was tied 3-3, with Nelson getting his second of the game.
Two early third period goals, gave the Rangers a 5-3 lead, a lead they were looking for, and they never turned back.
A Drew Minish goal, assisted by Arsenault, with 9:19 left, made the Rangers sit up and take notice, but their strong defence coupled with some wild saves by Lions goaltender Christian Francis kept the score at 5-4 in the Rangers favour.
It was in the final minute of play, with Francis gone from the Lions net in favour of the extra attacker, that the Rangers put the puck into the empty net twice for the 7-4 win.
The Lions went out in classy style.
Brandon Bruce and Cameron Dillion led the Rangers scoring with two goals each, and singles were scored by Ethan Jackson, Cameron Murray and Simon Barton.
Sunday in Prescott, the Rangers led 1-0 after the first period, but the Lions charged back in the second with two goals to the Rangers one to even it 2-2.
Nelson put the Lions up 3-2 early in the third but they couldn’t hold on, and the powerful Rangers offence came back for three for the 5-3 win.
Drew Minish counted two goals for the Lions, the first unassisted and the second assisted by Arsenault and Jaxon Weegar.
Nelson was unassisted on his third period goal.
It took four games for the Lions to knock off the North Dundas Demons in semi-final play last week.
The series opened in Morrisburg on Thursday, February 25 with a 2-2 tie, and the Lions took a three points to one series lead in Winchester on Sunday, February 28 with a 4-1 win.
But the Demons charged back in game three in Winchester, on March 3, to produce a 4-1 win to even the series at three points apiece and force a fourth game.
That was played in Morrisburg on Friday, night March 4, and the Lions claimed the win, 5-2 to advance to the division final again the Rangers.
Scoring for the Lions in game three against the Demons was Tyler Nelson, assisted by Mackenzie Nelson.
Drew Minish led the Lions scoring in game four with three goals, and Noah Picotte and Matt Backes provided singles.
The Ranger 1s now advance against the winners of the west division championship series between the Ranger 2s and Kemptville 1s for the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League Championship.
