Some building permit fees are about to double

It’s been about eight years since the Municipality of South Dundas has increased its building permit fees, and now it’s catch-up time.

South Dundas director of planning Don Lewis recommended that residential building permit fees significantly increase from the current 40 cents per square foot to the newly proposed 75 cents per square foot.

Under the proposed fee schedule, residential accessory building permit fees would double in cost from 25 cents per square foot to 50 cents a square foot as would farm buildings from 10 cents a square foot to 20 cents a square foot.

According to Lewis, the new fees will keep South Dundas building costs within range of other area municipalities.

“We’ve got to catch up,” said South Dundas councillor Archie Mellan.

“It’s overdue,” said South Dundas mayor Evonne Delegarde of the proposed increase.

Although some members of council and staff have demonstrated an appetite for the implementation of development charges, Lewis did not include them in the 2016 fee schedule. He said that with the current economic climate being what it is, this is not the time for the implementation of development charges.

The bylaw approving these building permit fee increases will be tabled at the March 1 council meeting.
