Raymond Fawcett

A lifetime resident of the area, Raymond Fawcett passed away at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Thursday, December 3, 2015, following a brief illness. He was 78.

Raymond was born in Matilda Township, on January 8, 2015, the son of Merrill and Mabel Fawcett (nee Froats). He grew up in a large family in the Hanesville area.  He lived an adventurous life and had passed on many stories of fun he had as a child and young man.

Raymond met and married Doris Fawcett (nee Wilson) and raised a small family on a farm that they purchased on the 7th Concession in Matilda Township. They lived a happy life there together until she succumbed to cancer in 1995.

Raymond enjoyed time spent with his sister Joyce Vincent and her late husband Jim in Florida at their home as he was working through his grief.

In 1998, Ray was introduced to Dorothy Pierunek. A loving and caring relationship evolved  from that meeting and after a time the two began a life together.

Dorothy and her large family welcomed Ray and his family with open arms and helped bring love and joy back into his life.

The two moved to Morrisburg for a time where Dorothy introduced Ray to volunteer work and he was able to reap the therapeutic benefits associated with it.  They lived there for a number of years until they downsized and moved to Metcalfe and the wonderful community at the Stanley Apartments.

Raymond was truly a Jack of All Trades. He worked as an Euclid and loader operator during the building of the Seaway, and used his skills in a number of quarries.

He worked on snow removal, drove transport, was a cash crop farmer, cut and sold wood and later in life drove people for dialysis.

Anything that Ray put his had to he tackled with pride and determination.

He loved hunting, woodworking, and most anything that involved being out of doors. He enjoyed watching hockey when it was in season, and he and Dorothy had a healthy hockey rivalry. He loved to travel and was able to visit Gaspe, Alaska and Labrador.

Ray loved to tease his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many will testify to the clacking teeth and being on the receiving end of a hearty whisker rub.

No matter where he went those he touched will say that his smile was genuine and infectious and that his pure and loyal nature will remain as an influencing memory long after his passing.

Raymond was an amazing son, husband, father, companion and friend and grandpa who will be sadly missed, and fondly remembered.

Raymond is survived by his loving companion Dorothy Pierunek.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children Anita Gilmour (Les) of Iroquois and Alan Fawcett (Angela) of Dundela and his stepchildren Wayne Pierunek (Ginette) of Gatineau, Barry Pierunek (Anita) of Kars, Shirley Black (Rusty) of Ottawa, Judy St. Martin (Jerry) of Ottawa, Bruce Pierunek (Bernadette) of Eganville, Angela Preseault (Chad) of Ottawa and Tanya Reynolds (Caleb) of Toronto.

He was dear brother of Jim of Iroquois, Joyce Vincent of Brinston and Margaret Link (Ralph) of Prescott.

Raymond will be fondly remembered by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife Doris Fawcett (nee Wilson), his parents Merrill and Mabel Fawcett, his brothers Donald, Dwayne and Keith and his stepson Brian Pierunek. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

There was no visitation or funeral service.  Donations to the Ottawa Civic Hospital Foundation would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Interment of cremated remains was at Spruce Haven Cemetery, Brinston.   Arrangements entrusted to the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg.  Online condolences may be ma
