Morrisburg bridge dedicated to fallen officer Ronald Pitt

South Dundas’ Community Strategic Plan, in its final draft form,  will be available to the public for comment by late September. 

Earlier this month, South Dundas council held a special meeting to review the draft and discuss any of their questions and concerns with staff.

“It was a council working session to review the draft and the implementation strategy of the plan,” said Nicole Sullivan, South Dundas economic development officer.

The general discussion concerning the actions and time line of the plan went very well, according to Sullivan. “Council has been involved through the whole process, so there were no major changes,” she said. 

From that meeting the final draft will be prepared and presented to council in September. After the September  meeting, the draft will be made available to the public for comment.

Iroquois holds its Remembrance Day ceremony

It was cold, almost bitter, and the skies were grey in Iroquois on Sunday, November 4, as Iroquois held its Remembrance Day ceremony.

That did not stop people, all ages, from coming out to honour and remember the young men who laid down their lives for Canada in the great World Wars. Also remembered at the ceremony were the veterans of Korea, of many Canadian peace keeping missions and of Afghanistan.

The Iroquois Fire Department joined the Legion Colour Party and members of Branch #370 in the parade to the cenotaph, as did the scouts and many others.

During the services at the Legion and at the monument, the pipes and drums of the Kemptville Legion Branch #212 Pipe Band, directed by Pipe Major Mike Durant, played hymns and airs that would have been very familiar to the soldiers who served Canada’s colours. Everyone sang “O Canada” before the memorial.

Wreaths were presented on behalf of local organizations, businesses, churches, families and individuals. The young people of the community were also part of the service. MP Guy Lauzon laid a wreath on behalf of the federal government while MPP Jim McDonell placed one for the government of Ontario. Councillor Evonne Delegarde represented the Township of South Dundas. Two minutes of silence was observed.

Legion chaplain the Reverend Janet Evans led those present in prayer, finishing with the words, “We give You thanks for all who served their nation in time of trial, and for those who made the supreme sacrifice.”

Moving day is approaching for the Dundas County Food Bank.

About 14 months after planning began to move the Morrisburg location of the Dundas County Food Bank into a new home just down the street, officials are happy to announce that the move will take place May 22 and 23. The Dundas County Food Bank will open in its new location May 25.

The new food bank will be in a portion of the fully renovated former library location at the Morrisburg arena.

The move won’t disrupt any food bank service, as the food bank closes at 3 p.m. on the Thursday in the old location and will open, no matter what, in the new location at 10 a.m. the following Monday.

A small group of volunteers has been working to assemble and arrange the shelving that will house donated food items.

Jim Millard, of the DCFB said that the location has more than enough shelving, as they had purchased some when Zellers was closing. In addition to that shelving, the library donated surplus shelving, tables and chairs to the food bank for its new home. 

Millard estimates that about 30 to 40 people have made themselves available to help with the move. Those volunteers will include Royal Bank staffers, student volunteers and regular food bank volunteers.
