Lineups herald announcement of new season at UCP

The first car was in the Upper Canada Playhouse parking lot shortly after 6 a.m. on Monday, November 9.

“This is just wild, just amazing,” said Upper Canada Playhouse artistic director, Donnie Bowes. “The box office doors didn’t  even open until 9 a.m.”

It is a mark of the popularity of the Playhouse, that people  were prepared to line up for hours to get their tickets and passes the very morning after Bowes officially announced the 2016 season.

The excitement over a new season at Upper Canada Playhouse is always high.

For 2016, artistic director Bowes has chosen plays and musicals which may even trump the popularity of the fantastic 2015 productions.

In April, Alice’s Restaurant: Memories of the 60s and 70s will bring four outstanding vocalists and a five piece band to the Playhouse.

Music in this debut show will run the gamut from the Eagles to Kenny Rogers, Simon & Garfunkel and Johnny Cash.

Next up will be the summer season opener, the uproarious comedy, There’s A Burglar in My Bed, by Michael Parker.

In July the Playhouse will offer the stage version of Robert Harling’s funny and heartfelt movie, Steel Magnolias.

The much beloved comedy focuses on the lives of a group of memorable women.

Next will be a knock-out, classic comedy by the great American playwright, Neil Simon.

Last of the Red Hot Lovers is a wonderful and hilarious look at a middle-aged man who attempts to add a little spice to his life.

The summer season will end with a brand new production by the renowned Canadian playwright, Norm Foster.

Jonas and Barry in the Home will star Foster himself in a play set in an assisted living home. This new show is filled with laughter and a lot of heart.

In early fall, the Playhouse will take audiences back in time with Dean & Jerry, What Might Have Been.

Starring Derek Marshall, who wowed Playhouse audiences in Vegas Nights, the audience will relive the classic comedy routines of Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. The music that made ‘Dino’ a singing sensation will also be featured.

Christmas at the Playhouse, 2016, is going to bring to life one of the most heart-warming stories of all time.

Miracle on 34th Street has been delighting audiences young and old for years. The spectacular Playhouse production,  filled with colourful characters, live music and a choir, will make it clear that at Christmas, dreams really can come true.

And speaking of Christmas, Bowes reminds audiences that the fantastic Leisa Way is bringing her show, Have Yourself A Swinging Little Country Christmas to the Playhouse from November 26 to December 13, 2015.

A musical extravaganza, filled with songs, classic and modern, dance, and, just maybe, an appearance by the Jolly Old Gentleman himself, Way’s live production will surely raise everyone’s spirits.

In the meantime, “our general manager, Roseann Kelly, is fielding around 200 calls a day for 2016 tickets and information,” Bowes said.

“Our regular box office staff, Wendy Cull and Courtney Garlough, have been joined for this week by Patty Thorpe, who usually works evening box office,” Bowes explained. “We are doing our best to get people served as quickly as we can.

The Playhouse continues to be the entertainment choice of thousands of local and visiting audiences.”

Contact Upper Canada Playhouse at 613-543-3713 or uppercanadaplayhouse.com for tickets for the 2015 Christmas show, or to find out more about purchasing tickets and passes for the 2016 season.

2016 shows will remain at 2015 prices.
