Open House at Firehalls

Iroquois station fire prevention officer Trevor Riopelle, and Morrisburg’s deputy fire chief Mike Van Allen both agreed. It was a real “team effort” on the part of all the fire fighters of both stations to organize and operate successful open houses at South Dundas fire halls as part of 2015 Fire Prevention Week.

Fire Prevention Week takes place October 4-11, and this year’s theme is “Hear the beep/Where you sleep,” emphasizing the importance of smoke detectors everywhere in the home, but especially outside bedrooms.

Both fire stations anticipated over 150 visitors to attend the many events set up.

On Saturday, October 3, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., the Iroquois and Morrisburg fire stations held open houses for the public. There were a wide variety of learning activities (such as a fire safety bingo) for the kids to enjoy, and educational brochures and the latest fire information for the adults to take home.

Visiting children were invited to try on fire fighting gear, and to climb on board the various South Dundas fire and rescue vehicles. Sirens were definitely popular throughout the day.

Sparky the fire safety mascot was a very welcome visitor at both fire halls when he pulled up in an official vehicle, ready to greet his fans.

Deputy chief of the Iroquois station, Philip Thompson, was busy cooking up a lot of hot dogs   for the large numbers of people who came out for the day.

“The weather has been ideal,” he said. “Our whole station team has put together a great effort to prepare for today.”

In Morrisburg, deputy chief Van Allen was also at the barbecue grill and laughed that “I think we’re going to run out of food, so many people have come out today.”

Morrisburg had an unexpected ‘glitch’ in its plans when the crew responded  to a call at 9:20 a.m. Saturday, just as the doors were due to open. “Fortunately it was  a simple remote alarm that went off, no fire, so we were back in lots of time,” said Van Allen.
