Duck Race Goes to the Dogs

The Morrisburg and District Lions Club Great Duck Race did go to the dogs, but no one was complaining.

Every one of the 1,000 tickets available for this annual fund raising event sold out two weeks early. The $5,000 raised will be put toward the many community projects and activities the Lions club supports in South Dundas.

“We are very grateful to everyone in the community who has supported this activity,” said Lion Judy Charrette. “And we especially thank our dogs and their owners.”

Janeen Wagemans handled the colour commentary on Sunday, August 2, 2015, as the “race” got underway at 10 a.m., after 1,000 numbered yellow ducks, on loan from a community group in Waddington, were dumped into the beach swimming area. Members of the Leos club were in the water to ensure that no duck “escaped” the area.

All the dogs were ‘volunteers’, (and the stars of the ‘show’). Three of them, Jayzee, Oakley and Koda were rookies. But veterans Abby, Finnegan and sub, Floyd, showed them the ropes. More or less. As a duck was retrieved from the water, its number was recorded, and the name of the dog noted. Veteran Floyd pulled the first place duck.

Carolyn Weegar took first prize, Ron Brinston second, Lisa Rathwell third, Scott Lane fourth and Floyd Latulippe was fifth.
