Solar project support denied

After deferring its decision for over a month, South Dundas council will not support a 500 kilowatt ground mount solar energy project proposed for a 5-6 acre parcel of land along County Road 1 between Hanesville and Glen Stewart.

Project proponent SunEdison asked the Municipality of South Dundas for a resolution of support for the project, in an attempt to secure priority points as they work to move forward with the project.

Deputy mayor Jim Locke and councillor Archie Mellan expressed support for this project.

“It is an individual’s land. I am a firm supporter of an individual using his property as he sees fit,” said Mellan. “It’s his land, we don’t have any business trying to stop him from using his land as he sees fit.”

South Dundas councillor Bill Ewing said that he would not support the project because this council has not yet decided if it is a willing host for wind or other energy projects. “For that reason I can’t support it.”

“I am not in agreement with the Green Energy Act,” said South Dundas councillor Marc St. Pierre. “I’m not in support of turbines. I’m not in agreement with this application.”

“I agree,” said South Dundas mayor Evonne Delegarde, adding that regardless of council’s decision, the proponent can still make their application for the project.

The resolution requesting support was defeated.
