key moments were the talk when players from three Morrisburg Junior B Lions teams got together for a 40 year reunion on the weekend.
Organized by Jeff Cassell with help from Doug McNairn and Jim Whelan, the event celebrated the successes of the teams that made Morrisburg junior hockey history in the mid to late 1970s.
Special guest was Ruth Rice, whose late husband John established and owned the Lions team until the early 1980’s when he sold it to a local group.
Ruth was on hand to present the #11 captain sweater that was retired to honour the four team members who captained the Lions to four consecutive ODHA finals. They were Chuck Lawlor (1975-76), Doug McNairn (1976-77), Bob McNairn (1977-78) and Rob Reynolds (1978-79).
In those four seasons, the Lions won two of four championships, the first in 75-76 in a series against the Hawkesbury Hawks and the second in the 77-78 season in a series against the Richmond Royals.
They were the ODHA semi-finalists in the other two seasons, losing in the final series to the Renfrew Lions in 76-77 and Ottawa South Canadiens in 78-79
The 1975-76 Lions was the first Morrisburg junior hockey club ever to win an ODHA championship.
Mrs. Rice this past winter discovered the retired #11 sweater amongst her late husband’s hockey memorabilia, and it was decided to take the opportunity the reunion would provide to have the four captains together and to formally present the sweater for public display. Unfortunately, Chuck Lawlor was unable to attend.
A special case will be made to display the sweater and will be placed in the arena.
The reunion was attended by Lions coaches Ken Morrow and Brian McNairn and assistant coaches Stan Mabo, Mike Felker and Rob Reynolds. (Felker and Reynolds played before joining the coaching staff).
Players travelling the farthest were Bob McNairn who now lives in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and Brian Rutley who is in Alberta.
They were joined by Brian Moran, Mike Moran, Ernie Duval, Kevin Duvall, Jeff Cassell, David Cassell, Tim Cassell, Bill Veley, Donnie McNairn, Doug McNairn, Leo Lafortune, Jim Whelan, Jim Tuttle and Gary Jarvis.
Other former Lions and team personnel who dropped by included Gary Hess, Gord Dillabough, Kevin Keyes and Allan McNairn.
