A lifelong resident of this area, Harold Herbert Gallinger, passed away at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Sunday, July 5, 2015, following a short illness. He was just six days short of his 86th birthday.
Harold was born July 11, 1929, in Williamsburg Township. He was the son of the late Bernice Murray Gallinger and Florence Mabel Weagant.
His mother died when Harold was just six years old, so he and his brother and sister received much of their upbringing from their grandparents.
On March 19, 1955, at the United Church Manse in Morrisburg, Harold married Helen Eileen (nee Jannack) who predeceased him, May 20, 1997.
Harold did some mixed farming at his farm in Archer before moving to Church Street in Morrisburg. He has lived at the Williamsburg Senior Retirement Centre for the last 11 years.
Harold loved driving vehicles, and for 30 years he drove school buses for Ken Gallinger. Even after retiring, he continued to drive a kinderschool bus half days.
Once he settled at the Senior Centre in Williamsburg, Harold drove seniors to and from medical appointments and to do their shopping. He was always helpful and considerate to the elderly and less fortunate.
Harold also took a special interest in cooking and preparing nutritious meals.
A strong, silent and solitary man, Harold was his own man, and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Harold is survived by his brother Lyle of Williamsburg, and he was the cherished uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Helen and by his sister Jean (Bob) Kilgor.
Visitation was Wednesday, July 8, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Parker Funeral Home in Morrisburg. The funeral service was conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, July 9, at 11 a.m., by Rev. Christine Lowson. Harold was a member of Williamsburg United Church.
Interment was at St. George’s Cemetery in Gallingertown. It was the final full burial to take place at St. George’s.
Pallbearers were Doug Shay, Mitchel Shay, John Romhild, Gary Barkley, Reg Longtin, Hubert Wells, Gary Whitford and Harold Coughler.
Memorial donations to Williamsburg United Church will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
