Jacob ‘Jake’ van Beilen

Verla Velma Perrin passed away suddenly at her home in Morrisburg, on Wednesday, June 3, 2015. She was in her 86th year.

Verla was the daughter of the late Albert and Eva (nee Littlejohns) Disheau. She was a faithful servant at her church; supporting weddings, funerals and bazaars, and helping behind the scenes.  

She served in many positions as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and attended Canadian Club meetings to satisfy her thirst for knowledge. She volunteered at the Upper Canada Playhouse. 

She fed stray cats, played cards with her family and enjoyed sports and camping.

Throughout the years, Verla worked at Dundas Manor, Foodland, Treasure Island Restaurant, Pokey’s Place, Caldwell Linen Mills and D&K Fabrics. 

She delivered mail in the Martintown area, was a Bell Telephone operator, and had worked for Mr. Crombley who was involved with the lettering of tombstones in Martintown. She also helped transport cars from one place to another.   

Verla’s handiwork was to be admired—she made many quilts and also crocheted.  She was an excellent seamstress and made her niece’s wedding dress. 

She enjoyed day excursions and travelled to see Daniel O’Donnell several times.  

Very active in the Progressive Conservative Party, Verla attended meetings, posted lawn signs, worked at polling stations and volunteered before election day.

Verla was a humble lady, always kind and quick to help anyone in need.  She had a very strong faith.   Indeed Verla a bundle of energy. She enjoyed life and had many interests. 

Verla was the beloved wife of the late Ron Perrin (2012), and loving mother of Richard Tyo and Brenda (late Paul) St. Louis, both of Cornwall.  

She was cherished grandmother of Heidi (Randy) McGillis and great-grandmother of Kaitlin and Sarah Lynn McGillis, all of Cornwall. 

Verla will be lovingly remembered by her stepchildren Dwight (Cathy) Perrin of Kingston and Dwayne Perrin of Athens.  She was dear step-grandmother of Cindy (Neil) Boyce of Harrowsmith and Lee Perrin of Kingston, and loving step-great-grandmother of Harley and Braden Boyce of Harrowsmith.

She was the treasured sister of Glendon (Beverly) Disheau of Morrisburg, Elizabeth Smith of Massena, NY, Warren Disheau of Toronto, Wayne (Ann) Disheau of Morrisburg, Carol (Frank) Dahl of Wasa, BC, and Louella Smail of Brinston.

She was dear sister-in-law of Winston Baker of Stampville and Beverly Disheau of Morrisburg. She will be sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews.  

Verla was predeceased by her parents Albert and Eva Disheau, her sister Heather Baker, her brothers Bert and Wallace Disheau and her brothers-in-law Harold Smith and Brian Smail. 

Friends were received at the Parker Funeral Home, Morrisburg on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Order of the Eastern Star, (Violet Chapter #206) service was held following the afternoon visitation.

Funeral service was at Lakeshore Drive United Church, Morrisburg on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 1 p.m.  Cremation with inurnment at Iroquois Point United Cemetery at a later date.  

Memorial donations to Lakeshore Drive United Church will be gratefully acknowledged.

A lifetime resident of the area, Gladys Burton passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Sunday September 21, 2014, at the age of 73. 

Born in Cornwall, on January 4, 1941, to her parents, George and Roselba Moss (nee Mondoux) Gladys was placed in foster care at the age of three.  

She was lovingly raised by Ken and Ada Gallinger of Gallingertown. Gladys attended Gallingertown Public School and later Aultsville High School.  

Upon graduation, she trained at Cornwall General Hospital.  Her career as an R.N. led her to work in various hospitals and nursing homes. 

 On June 16, 1962, Gladys fulfilled her yearbook ambition to become wife of Carl Burton.  Their married life took them to Kingston for a time, but their love of farming brought them back to their roots.  

This also afforded Gladys the opportunity to realize a childhood dream of being a teacher. It was her incredible proficiency as a student that led St. Lawrence College administration to offer her a faculty position.

Her attention to detail also prompted her to conduct extensive research on her genealogy and collect a vast amount of information on the various branches of her family tree.  

Gladys was a spiritual person who believed it was greater to give than to receive; she devoted much of her time and accounting skills to various church and non-profit organizations.

Gladys’ tremendous faith served her well in times of difficulty. She was diagnosed with Lupus at an early age and was presented with numerous health challenges yet she never complained.  

She was proud to be a part of the congregation of the Williamsburg Christian Reformed Church where she made very cherished friendships.

Gladys and Carl’s home was always a welcoming place to friends and family alike; many a story and chuckle were shared in their living room. She enjoyed countless family holidays and trips and time spent with those she loved.

Gladys is survived by her husband Carl Burton and her her siblings Keatha Brayton of Addison, Sheila Morrow (Bruce) of Arnprior, Lorraine Moss-Beaudry of Montreal and Francis Gallinger of British Columbia

She will be fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Glenda Lafortune (Richard) of R.R.# 1 Morrisburg and her brother-in-law Kent Burton of Lancaster.   She is also survived by four nieces, two nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. 

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was held at the Williamsburg Christian Reformed Church on Thursday, September 25th at 11 a.m., with Rev. John Noordhof officiating.  

Interment followed at New Union Cemetery, Williamsburg.  Pallbearers were Tabitha Marshall, Jessica Lafortune, Cassidy Lafortune, John Burton, James Burton and Melanie Burton. Honorary pallbearers were Peter Van Veen, Theo ter Horst and Clarence Haayema.

A longtime resident of the Ingleside area, Lena Edwards (nee Gallinger) passed away, peacefully, at Heritage Green Nursing Home in Hamilton, on Saturday, May 3, 2014. She was 99.

Lena was predeceased by her beloved husband Marshall in 1992. She will be missed by her children, Lynda Jackson (Keith) of Sauble Beach, Anne Lapinsky (Gerry) of Stoney Creek, and Brian Edwards (Diane) of Brinston.

She was loving grandmother of Marsha Miller (Australia), Sonia Lapinsky and Patrick Lapinsky, and Ian Jackson (deceased). She was great-grandmother of Lauren and Seth Miller.

Lena was younger sister to Laura Wells, Garnet Gallinger and Ken Gallinger (all deceased), and she was a good friend to all of her brothers and sisters-in-law in both the Gallinger and Edwards families (all deceased).

Many of her nieces and nephews kept in contact with Lena over the years.

Lena grew up in Aultsville, Ontario, married Marshall Edwards, and raised her family there until 1958, when they relocated to Ingleside due to the expropriation of their home to make way for the St. Lawrence Seaway.

A year later, the family moved to Morrisburg.

Lena and Marshall were not only husband and wife, but best friends, doing most things together. Marshall died in 1992.

In Morrisburg, Lena returned to teaching. She remained with her Grade 6 classes until the late 1960’s when she retired. She loved teaching and had some very long-term relationships develop with students, right up to the end of her life.

In her spare time, Lena enjoyed knitting and creating quilts for her family. She had a very inquisitive mind and loved to read newspapers and discuss politics and current events.

She was often seen on her bicycle until her mid 80’s, when progressive blindness curtailed many of her favourite activities.

Lena moved to Stoney Creek in 2000 to be closer to her daughters and to downsize her residence from a house in Morrisburg to an apartment in Stoney Creek. Here she made many new friends.

Lena was very fortunate to meet Della Boyd, who became her third daughter and a dedicated caregiver. Della remained with Lena until the last day, and was a source of great comfort to Lena and her family.

Lena also enjoyed having daily telephone conversations with her niece Shirley Stewart of Ingleside.

Lena had a long enjoyable life until she became ill over the last four years. She will be remembered as a very caring and concerned wife, mother and friend.
