Have a laugh for a fun-filled Canada Day

At the March 20th South Dundas council meeting, economic development officer Nicole Sullivan recommended “that council retain the services of McSweeney & Associates to complete an update to the 2005 South Dundas Strategic Economic Development Plan for a cost of $10,000.”

As reported earlier this year, Sullivan, with permission from council, submitted a completed application to the Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP) for funding to complete the project to update the 2005 economic plan.

“As part of that application,” she said, “we were required to have two quotes with it.”

“Quotes were obtained from Dillon Consulting and McSweeney & Associates whose services were retained to complete the South Dundas Community Strategic Plan and the SD&G Strategic Economic Development Action Plan respectively.”

Project objectives include:

• “Provide a realistic and strategic approach to economic development for the next five years;

• Align local economic development efforts with those of the community and region, identifying complementary and mutually supportive activities; and,

• Encourage advancement and accountability in local economic development.”

Sullivan’s recommendation for McSweeney & Associates was based on a group decision following a review and discussion period. The group included mayor Steven Byvelds, chief administrative officer Stephen  McDonald, chair of the economic development advisory committee Mark Prost, and Sullivan herself.

Following Sullivan’s recommendation and council’s approval, mayor Steven Byvelds said, “McSweeney & Associates can certainly bring us some useful information.”

“Funding was allocated under the 2012 capital budget,” reported Sullivan, “if our application to the EODP is successful that will offset our costs.”

SD&G–Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) Police Services Board announced that Dennis Fife has been reappointed chair and Bryan McGillis has been newly appointed vice chair of the board for the ensuing year.

Dennis Fife, County councillor of North Stormont has been an active member of the Police Services Board for many years.

“Input provided by the Board drives local policing initiatives to ensure a safe community for the residents of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry,” says Fife. “I look forward to continue working with the Detachment Commander, BJ MacDonald and the SDG Police Services Board to ensure we deliver a high level of service to the community.” 

Bryan McGillis, County Councillor of South Stormont, stated “I am glad to be returning to the SDG Police Services Board and look forward to working with the Board, OPP and County staff to provide effective policing in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.”

The function of the United Counties SDG Police Services Board is to establish local policies, priorities and objectives concerning policing in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry that will address the needs of the residents and businesses, in consultation with the OPP Detachment Commander and the community. 

The Board consists of five members being the head of council or his/her designate; one member of the council appointed by council, one person appointed by council who is neither a member of the council nor an employee of the municipality and two persons appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council 

Board members include: Dennis Fife, Bryan McGillis, Kirsten Gardner, John Hope and Bryan McEwan.

 Princess Snow White taught an enthusiastic group how to be ‘perfect princesses,’ Barney sang songs with his young fans and Spiderman delighted would-be super heroes. 

On Saturday, June 1, the Morrisburg & District Figure Skating Club held a Fun Fair at the Morrisburg Arena. 

“This is our second year for the Fun Fair,” said Club president, Julie Van Hoof. “The event was organized by Tracey Yalden. It is our hope to raise $2,000 today for the Figure Skating Club. We have princesses, the Vanderlaand Barnyard Zoo, Tribek Inflatables and a Mad Scientist show. We also have the ‘Love to Groove’ Dancers coming from Ottawa.” 

There were plenty of activities for youngsters of all ages to enjoy at the Fair and plenty of delicious food. Morrisburg’s Giant Tiger donated hot dogs to the event; pink cotton candy and popcorn were also very popular. Riley’s Valu-Mart donated gift cards to the Fun Fair.

The baby goats, hamsters and bunnies in the Barnyard Zoo also drew lots of happy attention.

The Fun Fair ran from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
