Two big wins for Novice Bs over South Grenville

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions will end their season with a home and home series against the Akwesasne Wolves this weekend. Sunday, will be their final home game for the 2014-15 season when they will entertain the Wolves in a match that will start at 2:30 p.m.

This past week, the Lions travelled to Casselman where they were handed an 8-2 loss by the first place Vikings, and then on Saturday night, they took it to a shoot out before they gave up the loss to the hosting Char-Lan Rebels, 3-2.

Saturday night at the Char-Lan Rec Centre, it was a good, close game that ended in a two-goal draw to force overtime and eventually a shoot out.

After a scoreless first period, David Poirier put the Rebels on the scoreboard on their power play.

At 12:48 of the second, Curtis Evans (from Jacob Guilliot and Ryan Griffin) tied the game 1-1.

Brennan Markell made it 2-1, Rebels at 18:06, and that’s the way it stayed until early in the third period.

This time it was the Lions power play that got the results at 3:19 of the frame.

Jacob Kendrick and Jordan Smail provided the setup for a Michael Paquette goal which tied the game 2-2.

It stayed that way to force the overtime during which, neither the Lions Keiran Weir nor the Rebels Kevan Dumouchel would give anything more up to force the decision to the shoot out.

Selected to shoot for the Lions were Paquette, Jacob Kendrick and Alex Sifton and getting the nod for the Rebels were Brennan Markell, Matthew Gregoire and Quintin MacDonnell.

 Kendrick had the only success for the Lions, while Markell and MacDonnell both beat Weir for the 3-2 win.

Thursday night, February 5, the Lions were in Casselman where they were handed an 8-2 blow by the division leading Casselman Vikings.

The Vikings led 4-0 after the first period, and 6-0 after two.

The Lions got on the scoreboard in the third period with a pair of goals from the stick of Michael Paquette at 6:07 and again at 6:15.

Jacob Guilliot assisted on both goals. Jordan Smail also helped out on the first and Landon Veenstra on the second.

Keiran Weir started for the Lions and was relieved by Brett Hahn.

The Lions are on the road to take on the Wolves this Saturday night, February 14 and at home against the Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

Neither will see playoff action this year.

Our little rockers met each other in the “B” final of the “Big Four” bonspiel. Martina and Kyra Lewis, and Erin and Annika Gibbons lost their first game to Metcalfe, but won their second against Winchester. Nolan Belanger, James Szuky, Tommy Derikz and Abby Tritzsky lost a nail-biter to Winchester and defeated our other team to win the “B” championship. 

The next day in the Ran Wylie bonspiel, Martina and Kyra Lewis, Rhiannon Beckstead and Abby Tritzsky won both of their matches to finish second. The curlers had a great time and are preparing for the little rocks playdowns in Cornwall on March 2.

At the senior men’s Bernie Brunt Invitational Bonspiel last week met at the club, with teams from Winchester, R.C.M.P., Russell, City View, Cornwall, Rideau and Kingston in attendance, as well as two local teams.

The early draw was won by the Marseille foursome from Winchester. As the high-scoring team they got their name on the trophy. Raymond Benoit, Peter Zeran, Jack Barkley and Fred “Boomer” Langlotz played well, but did not figure in the prize money.

In the late draw, Andy Patenaude, Mahlon Locke, Neil Williams and Bob Youmelle also finished out of the money, losing to Henry’s Prescott team, who tied with City View to win the draw and prize money. As usual, the meal was excellent, the ice was great, and the day was a financial success. The hard work of the volunteers was much appreciated.

 The final Parnell competition for the season was held on Friday, and while three of our senior men’s teams wanted to represent us, we were only allowed one entry. 

Raymond Benoit, Peter Zeran, Karl Duncan and Earl Jeacle defeated Dave King, Al Harriman, Rick MacKenzie and Fred Langlotz on Thursday and won the right to go to Lancaster for the bonspiel. 

They won their first match against Prescott in an extra end, and after lunch played a strong Cornwall team. Unfortunately, Cornwall won, and with the point total, our fellows placed second to Lancaster. Well done anyway, fellows!

Susan McIntosh, Kathy Norg, Joanne Baker and Claire Locke competed in a ladies’ invitational “favourite twosomes” three-day bonspiel in Cornwall. Susan’s team lost on Friday night to Cornwall and dropped a Saturday match to Lancaster, but defeated another Lancaster foursome in the afternoon, qualifying them for the “D” final. They lost that match on Sunday, but came home happy, having enjoyed the meals, the costumes and the live band. 

Several of the ladies wore interesting outfits. One pair, for example, dressed as ketchup and mustard (favourite condiments being the twosome in that case). That must have been worth the price of admission. Maybe Susan brought home pictures.

On Saturday, the Merkley Bonspiel was on at Metcalfe. Morrisburg, Russell and Winchester each brought two teams to compete. Our champions, Robbie Stitt, Robert Houze, Rick MacKenzie and John Toonders lost their opening match to Metcalfe and defeated Russell after lunch. This qualified them for the “B” final. With Robbie having to leave early, Joe enjoyed the banquet and skipped the team against Giroud’s Russell foursome. Russell won the competition and will defend the trophy next year.

Joe McCooeye, Larry Cooper, Peter McCooeye and Wally Baker dropped their matches against Winchester and Russell. The “A” final was an all-Metcalfe affair, with the championship won by Bill Woods’ team. It was a great day for the men

A very solid six under par 64 landed the golfers representing the Lyell Strader family the Memorial Day tournament silverware at the Cedar Glen Golf Course here on Saturday.

The annual tournament is played in memory of the local families who are forever appreciated for their contributions to the Cedar Glen Golf course and the Williamsburg community.

They include the late Cliff and Agnes Casselman upon whose farm the original nine-hole Cedar Glen course was built, the late Stuart and Ethel Saddlemire whose farmland is home to the Glen’s expanded back nine holes, the late Lyell Strader who was the Glen’s first member and Dr. M.W. Locke who played a big role in the history of Williamsburg.

The tournament is open to all Cedar Glen members, all family members of those being honoured and all area golfers. This year, all but one team played in the mixed scramble format and they were Brandon and Vince Cousineau and Bryden and Peter Van Kessel who posted an impressive 13 under par 59.

Winning by a slim one stroke in the mixed scramble format category with their 64 was the team of Lyle and Kim Schell and Mitch and Laurie Hutt. Laurie and Lyle are grandchildren of the late Lyle Strader. 

The mixed championship was highly contested with three teams finishing tied for second place with five under par 65s.

They included the Sam Locke team, the Brian McNairn team and the Cheryl Low team.

Playing for the Locke team were Sam and Claire Locke and and daughter Jane Howe and Wayde Roles.

For the McNairn team were Brian and Bonnie McNairn and Shawn and Lila Lapier and playing for the Lowe team were Cheryl Lowe, John Phillips, Sherri Boyd and Michael Hunt.

The ladies long drive was struck by Lindsay Waddell, and Brandon Cousineau hit the longest ball for the men.

Cheryl Lowe produced the closest to the hole shot on the par three 15th hole and Sam Locke had the closest for the men on the par three 12th.

Tied with 66s were the teams of Garry McMillan and Shaler Hill and the Barry Casselman team was next with a 68.

“We are here today to remember some very special people in our club’s history and in the history of our community,” said Cedar Glen owner Dennis Casselman as he spoke of each of the families being honoured.

Mahlon Locke thanked Dennis and Kathy for doing “ a great job on this tournament year after year. We thank you for hosting the tournament every year and allowing us to have a beer and hoist one for the old days.”

Bruce Whitteker said he remembers how his grandfather and grandmother (Cliff and Agnes Casselman) used to refer to Dennis and Ronnie Casselman and Rex Whitteker as the “three mouseketeers”. “The course is in great shape. I know it is a lot of work, and I’m very proud to be a member of this club.”

His sentiments were echoed by Lyle Schell whose grandfather Lyell Strader was Cedar Glen’s first member and first paid member every year after that. “I am proud to be a member here, and I hold my glass proudly for all these people in their memory.”
