The Canadian Army Veterans (CAV) – Sicily Motorcycle Unit will be holding the third annual Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Highway 43 Memorial Ride on July 5th, 2014.  

The ride will honour our Veterans, and in collaboration with The Royal Canadian Legion – Ontario Command, will raise funds for Operation: Leave the Streets Behind for the ‘Homeless Veterans Assistance Fund’.  

The fund provides financial assistance for Ontario Veterans to obtain housing, furniture, food and medical care during their time of need.

All riders are welcome to the ride and the $20 registration per rider and $10 per passenger includes the poker run and complimentary snacks along the route.  

Breakfast and the barbecue at the end of the ride are provided by the Royal Canadian Legion Branches for a minimal fee.  

The ride starts at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Perth and follows the Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Highway 43 to Alexandria, stopping at several Royal Canadian Legion Branches for presentations.  

It concludes at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Morrisburg, with a barbecue, announcement of the poker run prizes and distribution of door prizes.  All proceeds of the ride including all cash donations go directly to the ‘Homeless Veterans Assistance Fund’.  Breakfast and registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and kickstands up at 9:30 a.m. 

Last year, a total of $19,160 was raised from the ride, the coin collections and more importantly due to the generous support of the community. Local merchants, charities and companies have been very supportive by contributing donations, goods and services annually to this event.

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario is currently facing the paradox of having high unemployment at the same time as a growing shortage of skilled trades workers. 

Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak said today that modernizing Ontario’s apprenticeship system is a practical solution that will help fix both problems by creating 200,000 new skilled trades jobs.

Ontario is losing 100 private-sector jobs every hour, contributing to a jobless rate that has remained above the national average for almost five years. 

At the same time, Ontario’s shortage of skilled trades workers – from ironworkers to electricians to plumbers – is reaching an alarming level, and is expected to top one million vacancies within a decade.

The issue is Dalton McGuinty’s refusal to modernize an outdated apprenticeship system that requires businesses to employ three, four or even five journeymen to train a single apprentice – a more restrictive ratio than almost all other provinces in Canada.

Hudak renewed his call today to reduce the ratio of journeymen to apprentices 1-to-1. Reducing the ratio frees up more journeymen to train more apprentices.  Those apprentices eventually become journeymen themselves and train apprentices of their own – creating a job creation cycle that would see 200,000 new skilled tradesmen on the job in just four years.

“Yesterday, over 50 apprenticeship students attended Queen’s Park, relating their problems in completing their programs, due to the 3:1 ratios.  In fact, during the session, every one of them identified a classmate that had to move to Western Canada to finish their program.  We need action now by this Liberal government to fix this ratio issue, address the huge shortage of trades people that is forecasted over the next 5 years and to create 200,000 new, high paying skilled jobs.”

 Nine students from Seaway District High School took home a number of significant awards from the 2015 United Counties Science Fair, held at St. Lawrence High School in Cornwall on April 11.

Seaway teachers Melissa Ringler and Robin Gibbs, expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments, pointing out that the teens were up against talented competitors drawn from all the area high schools and intermediate schools. 

“The competition was intense,” said Dana Domanko.

“But the questions the judges asked us were ones we could answer,” added Andi Black.

Asked if they would take part in a science fair again, all nine students gave a resounding yes.
