Lions no match for first place Vikings

The Casselman Vikings steam rolled over the Morrisburg Junior Lions in St. Lawrence Division Junior B division hockey this past week, with a 9-4 victory in their home barn on Thursday, November 6, and a 7-0 shutout in Morrisburg on Saturday night, November 8.

The division leading Vikings have only one blemish to date this season, and that was handed to them by the Lions recently when they lost in an overtime shoot out.

The Vikings hold the division’s top spot with 25 points on 12 wins and the single point for the overtime shootout loss.

The Akwesasne Wolves are in second place with 18 points, the Alexandria Glens are third with 13 and the Winchester Hawks and Lions are tied with 12 points apiece. The Char-Lan Rebels are in the basement position with just four points.

Thursday night in Casselman, the Vikings went up 4-0 in the first period. The Lions played a strong second period (outscoring the Vikings, 3-2), but that was as threatening as they would be.

A Justin Rutley goal (assisted by Eric Evans and Michael Paquette) 29 seconds into the third period cut the gap to 6-4, but the Vikings added another three for the 9-4 win.

Nicolas Brazeau led the Vikings scoring with three points and Luc Forget added a pair. Single goals were scored by Grant Hebert, Sébastien Plante, Samuel Gosselin and Jérémie Lefebvre.

Answering for the Lions were Cole Blanchard, Jacob Kendrick, Justin Rutley and Dallas Blacksmith.

Lions goaltenders Keiran Weir and John Gilmer shared the net duties.

Saturday night in Morrisburg, the Lions held the visiting Vikings to a scoreless first period.

But they couldn’t contain them in the second period when they collected four goals off Gilmer to go up 4-0 heading into the third period.

Leading the Vikings charge, with another three goal performance, was Nicolas Brazeau. Gosselin, Maxime Choquette, Taylor Widenmaier and Mathieu Galipeau all added singles.

Coming up on Friday, November 14, the Lions travel to Alexandria to take on the Glens and Saturday night, November 15 they host the Winchester Hawks. Game time is  7:30 p.m.

North Dundas Devils tops in County hockey

For the second consecutive year, the North Dundas Devils are the holders of the Dundas County High School Hockey Cup following the final leg of action between the two Dundas County high schools, North Dundas and Seaway District, here on Friday, March 23.

In the final action, the North Dundas boys carved out an 8-0 victory over the Seaway Spartans to sweep the two game series. The Devils registered their first win on Morrisburg ice on Friday, February 24 by a 5-1 count.

Friday the Devils went up 1-0 in the first period, and then pushed it to 5-0 in the second period.

While the Seaway boys were unable to get much going against their opponents, the Seaway girls avenged themselves, for their opening game loss, with a 4-2 victory.

The Devils won the opening game in Morrisburg by a 2-0 count.

This time out the two played to a 1-1 first period tie, and Seaway moved ahead 3-2 in the second period as they headed for the 4-2 victory.

Lesley-Ann Tupper led the Seaway effort with two goals and singles came from the sticks of Vicki Van Hoof and Michaela Morrow.

The County Cup is awarded to the winning school based on the overall results from the home and home series. 

Although a similar hockey setup existed between the two school several years back, it was only re-introduced last year.

This also marked just the second year that Seaway has iced teams in the SD&G high school league.

The Skaters Edge

Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry skating, and oh yeah Merry Christmas too! 

As you can tell it’s Christmas month at M.D.S.C and to get in the mood we’re playing Christmas songs all month. This may seem odd since Christmas still seems very far away, but there are only 12 days until the big guy comes!  

However, Santa wants to check up on our Canskaters, so he’ll be at the rink in just five days, on the 19th, for all our Monday and Saturday Canskaters!  If you really want to get in the Christmas spirit remember to wear red and green to the rink on the 17th.

Christmas may be all that’s on your mind right now, but for many of our Starskaters, competitions  and test days all they are worrying about.  There is a competition  on the 21st and 22nd of January in Prescott and one on the 28th in Arnprior. 

In Morrisburg, on the 27th of January, we have a low test day, and on the 20th of January in Athens, we have a high test day. 

Finally, just a reminder for our skaters that skating is cancelled form the 24 of December to the 2nd of January.  Canskaters don’t come back until the 9th of January, but the Starskaters are back on the 4th.
