Dawn Froats

A lifetime resident of the area, Iva Rutherford (nee Baker) of Mariatown, passed away at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Thursday, May 21, 2015. She was 83.   

Iva was born in Williamsburg Township, on July 5, 1931, to her parents Aiden and Alberta Baker (nee Gallinger). On September 8th, 1956, she married Theodore Rutherford and together they raised two children. 

Iva worked for the paper mill in the old town of Morrisburg, and after having her own children she took jobs baby-sitting and cleaning homes. She later worked along with her husband at the egg grading station in Glen Becker until its closure. Her last job was at Odonto in Morrisburg, as a shift supervisor until her retirement. 

Iva loved gardening, camping and listening to old time country music on records. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who found joy sharing stories with her grandchildren about the old days and how she grew up without all of the luxuries of today. 

Iva was a lifelong member at Saint James Anglican Church in Morrisburg.  

The beloved wife of the late Theodore Rutherford, Iva is survived by her children Steven Rutherford of Cornwall and Laurie Chater (Gerry) of Morrisburg and her grandchildren  DeeJay Keeler, Kaitlyn Keeler, Amber Rutherford and Michelle Chater.  She was dear sister-in-law of Zeta Baker of Mariatown. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Iva was predeceased by her husband Theodore, her sisters Eva Ladue and Vera Rutherford and her brothers Allen, Roy and John Baker.  

A Memorial Service was held at St. James Anglican Church, Morrisburg, on Tuesday, May 26th at 11 a.m. with Rev. Craig Bowers officiating. Interment followed at St. James Cemetery, Morrisburg. 

Pallbearers were her grandchildren DeeJay, Kaitlyn, Amber and Michelle.   

Donations to St. James Anglican Church would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Marian Smollett, in her 83rd year, passed away peacefully at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on November 5, 2011, following a brief struggle with cancer.

Marian (nee O’Meara) was the beloved wife of Ray Smollett and loving mother of Gail Flinn (David), Gwen McGill (Rod), Joyce Bartholomew (Wayne) all of Iroquois, Brenda Millward (Ian) of Morrisburg and Helen Hawley (Doug) of Kingston.

She was the cherished grandma of Melissa Flinn, Sarah, Kristy and Nicholas McGill (Lesley), Kelly Redden (Sean), Josh Bartholomew, Ty and Reagan Hawley and dear great-grandmother of Shayna, Sawyer, Madeline, Katherine, Quinton and Gavin. She was dear sister of Joan Williams of Calgary.

Marian will be missed by her nieces and nephews and by her good friends Marlene, Judy, Mary and Timmy.

Family was very important to Marian. She truly enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A longtime member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Marian was a dedicated Sunday school teacher for many years. She belonged to the Presbyterian Women’s Group and participated in many enjoyable activities. 

She was a volunteer canvasser for various charities for many years.

From a young age, Marian had a special love for animals. She also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds.

Friends visited the family at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home on November 7.

The funeral service took place at Knox Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, November 8, at 11 a.m. In honour of her Scottish heritage Marian was piped in and out of the church.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Sarah, Kristy, Nicholas, Josh, Melissa and Ty. Internment was at Knox Cemetery, followed by a luncheon in the Church Hall.

Memorial donations were made to the SPCA and Knox Church.

A resident of R.R.# 1 Iroquois for the past 30 years, George Peters passed away at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, November 21, 2012. He was 72.

George was born in Pioneer Mines, British Columbia, on May 25, 1940, to his parents John and Patricia Peters (nee Mooney). 

George spent his early years sailing and served three years in the navy.  He then settled down and married Patricia (nee Drake) in Thorold, Ontario, in 1965.  He and Patricia raised three children there, Terri Lynn, Kelly and Patricia.  

George worked at St. Catharines Fuel Oils for 14 years, and on occasion, he would hang out with the gang at Ed’s garage in Thorold.  

In 1982, George and his family moved to Iroquois, Ontario and George worked at Universal Terminals for the last 30 years. 

George enjoyed living close to the water so he could pursue his love of the water and fishing.  He also enjoyed woodworking.

In the last couple of years, he became quite an expert in figuring out the computer and eventually started building them.  

George also enjoyed a Sunday out at Carl’s seek and find but his true passion was his family.  He loved to share his stories with the grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his unique sense of humour and his belief in other people.

George will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Patricia; his children Terri Lynn Peters of Brockville, Kelly Peters (Cindy) of Brinston and Trish Ault (Barny) of Brinston; his siblings Lawrie Peters of Hawaii and Frank Peters (Wendy) of Alberta. 

George will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Michelle, Randy, Krista, Emily, Kyle, Chris, Brandon, Ryley, Madison, Mikayla and by his great-grandchildren Jacob and Rebecca. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his parents John and Patricia Peters (nee Mooney) and his brother Hugh Peters.  

Friends called at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on Tuesday, November 27th, from noon until time of service.  A memorial service followed at 2 p.m., with Rev. Brenda Bailey officiating.
