Create, display, light the way for Season of Pumpkin People

All three fire stations in the South Dundas Fire Department held open houses on Saturday, October 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. complete with tours, free souvenirs and barbecue munchies. Fire Chief Chris McDonough said the open houses were a a great success and that he’s “looking forward to doing it again next year.” At the Williamsburg location the local children were having fun climbing into, out of, and on the fire trucks. Over the last few months, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), East Region Marine and SAVE units have been patrolling our lakes and rivers.  Unfortunately, several charges have been laid in relation to equipment, licences and operation.

Members of our Snowmobile, All Terrain, Vessel Enforcement (SAVE) unit advise that on too many occasions:
• Operators do not have enough life jackets on board. There is a $240 fine plus an additional $100 for each additional life jacket that is missing (per person). Life jackets can only save a life if it is on and is the appropriate size for each person on board the vessel. 
• Lights are not being utilized during reduced periods of visibility and at night time
• Boats are still being operated and underway with open alcohol on board without the proper vessel requirements (See Liquor Licence Act and Regulations)
• Operators are failing to have proof of competency with them on board their vessels

“What uses electricity in your home?”

This was the first question, Brian Carter, a retired safety consultant for Electrical & Utilities Safety Association, asked the grade 3/4 class of St. Mary’s – St. Cecilia’s Catholic School in Morrisburg.

Carter was at the school on December 1st giving presentations on “electrical safety and conservation.”

Rideau St. Lawrence Utilities hires Carter to give the presentation to schools in their service area every three years. In the last two weeks, Carter has visited elementary schools in Cardinal, Iroquois, Morrisburg, Prescott, and Westport.

According to Carter, the presentation’s purpose is to give students “a basic knowledge and awareness of what could happen and what they should do if something does take place.”

Most importantly, he said, is to teach children to have respect for electricity: “It’s a wonderful thing  folks, as long as we respect it.”

Carter’s presentation included demonstrations, audience participation, hands-on activities, and a short film, “Power Line Safety the Buddy Way.”
