The 19th Hole

The annual Memorial Day tournament was played Sunday, July 7th at the Cedar Glen Golf course with 56 golfers participating. Each year the tournament is played to honour individuals of the Williamsburg community for their contributions to the community and the Cedar Glen Golf Course. Those honoured include the late Cliff and Agnes Casselman on whose farm Cedar Glen’s first nine holes are located and  the late Stuart and Ethel Saddlemire on whose farm the golf course expanded for its second set of nine holes. Also remembered at the tournament are longtime Cedar Glen member and supporter the late Lyell Strader and the late Dr. M. W. Locke. Winners of this year’s tournament in the mixed division was the team of Barry and Janice Casselman and Bruce and Sharon Whitteker. Second low gross in the mixed division was won by Gary, Dana and Grant McMillan and Sarah Myers. In the men’s division the team of Lyle Schell, Mitch Hutt, James Morrell and Billy Dejong were the low grow winners. Lindsay Waddell struck the ladies longest drive, while Andrew Byvelds hit the longest drive for the men. Closest to the pin winners were Jessica Whitteker on the part three 12th hole and Bunny Warner on the par three ninth. The New Blue struck seven times in the third period and that was more than enough to take out the Morewood Monkeys in Men’s Roller Hockey League action here last Thursday.

It was actually a case of the missing Monkeys in the third period, as they had held the league leading New Blue to a 4-3 lead in the first period and trailed only 9-6 at the end of two.

While New Blue goaltender Will McIntire held the Monkeys from the scoreboard in the third, Monkey goaltender Kyle Shane gave up seven to the Blues for the 16-6 Blue win.

Garreth Cochrane and Lance Hodgson were the top Blue shooters with four goals apiece. Tommy Keyes connected for three goals, Justin Elliott had two and singles came from Jamie McIntosh, Aron Sherrer and Randy Markell.

Mike Thompson and Tyler Jones answered twice each for the Monkeys, and Chris Embury and Justin Heuff had singles.

The win allowed the New Blue to remain undefeated after four games. They hold a full four point advantage over White Lightning, who Thursday night, collected a 13-8 victory from the Red Rockets.

They led the Rockets 4-2 after the first period and 9-5 after two.

Steve Mattice had a huge night for Lightning with five goals while Brandon Buma and Chris Embury added three apiece, and Dave Summers and Bill Henderson struck for singles.

Summers added six assists to his one goal effort.

Answering for the Rockets, against Lightning goaltender Barret Brundige, were Chad McMillan, David Patterson and Dean Moore all with two goals and Craig Belanger and Darrel Moore with singles.

Chris Sloan handled the loss in the Rockets net.

The win allowed Lightning to take over the league’s second spot with four points. The Rockets are in third with three and the Monkeys have just one.

“We have about 90 kids,” said a very pleased Ben Macpherson as the 2012 South Dundas Minor Ball Hockey League hit the floor at the arena here last Wednesday night for week two of action.

“We only had 26 kids last year, so this is a big change,” said Macpherson of the success of the program in its second season,

The 90 kids are divided into two age groups, eight to 11 years in the junior and 12-16 in the senior. There are four teams in each category. Two half-hour games are played in each division on Wednesday nights with the first starting at 5:50 p.m. The program will run for 12 weeks and will wrap up with playoffs.

Macpherson says he is extremely pleased with the turnout and “the parents have been great, very helpful. A number have stepped up big time to coach and run the game clock.”

Macpherson is also thankful for the support of the community. “The jerseys were done through Sports Fix here in Morrisburg and he was very friendly with the price. And Canadian Tire has been very helpful with the goaltending equipment.”

Also along for their weekly runs are high school volunteers Andy Hunter and Drew Gillard who will benefit by getting their community service hours from their refereeing at the junior level.

The two are also playing at the senior level which Macpherson is refereeing.

“We still have a few spots left. They are limited but there all spots. All the kids require is a helmet with a facemask, hockey gloves and sticks. We recommend that they wear soccer shin pads, but they are not mandatory.”

Light elbow pads could also be worn.

MacPherson says the play is competitive in that the kids are playing actual games and standings are being kept.

“It is competitive, but that is not the be all of it. It’s to get the kids out and be active.”

“We are playing regular hockey rules, but it’s more relaxed. It’s summertime, and we want them to have fun with it.
