Trailer Upset at Rooney’s

Seaway Valley Crime Stoppers had its 50/50 winning ticket picked on October 15th at Jim Mustard’s Variety store in Iroquois. Jim Mustard has been a supporter of the program since its inception in 1992. The winning ticket for the 50/50 was sold at the Williamstown fair this past August; the winner was Denis Tousignant of Greenfield, North Glengarry Township ($1550.00).  The winning ticket was pulled by Nelson Zandbergen in front of Mustard’s Variety store.

A 12 year relationship between the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Community Futures Development Corporation is about to come to an end.

For 12 years, the SD&G CFDC has provided economic development services on behalf of the counties, but at the last meeting of counties council it was decided that the counties will look after its own economic development. The decision was reported to South Dundas council at the Sept. 18 meeting.

“It was felt that there was a disconnect between the CFDC, counties council and counties staff,” explained South Dundas mayor and counties councillor Steven Byvelds. The counties now have a new strategic plan, and with this plan, felt now was the time for them to start looking after economic development themselves. So, they will be doing so in 2013.

According to Byvelds, this should lead to a lot of positive synergies, as he sees the counties economic development work tying in significantly with the economic development work being done through the lower tier municipalities in SD&G.

“This is an opportunity for the Counties and the lower tiers to work together on a central goal of economic development,” said Byvelds.

“This was our first year collecting in Iroquois,” said Dundas Food Bank secretary, Celeste Guse, “and the people here have been incredibly generous. We’ve received all kinds of food, and many people have given cash donations as well.”

“We’ve had an excellent turn-out here in Morrisburg,” said OPP Constable Theresa Lauzon. “People have really been getting into the spirit of giving, and it’s been great for the Food Bank. We’ve already filled three cruisers.”

Stuff-a-Cruiser was the initiated by Auxiliary Staff Sergeant, Alan Jodoin. The event represents a joint effort by the OPP and the OPP Auxiliary to help Food Banks ensure that shelves are well stocked during the Christmas season. This year the campaign brought in 1,000 items of food. “We also received $1,500 in donations from the Morrisburg/Iroquois locations,” said Donna Quesnel, on the board of the Dundas Food Bank.
