The family of W. Glenn Keyes is saddened by his sudden passing on February 15, 2013 from injuries sustained from a fall six days earlier.  

Glenn, a long-time resident of Morrisburg, was well known by many from his years as manager of the Bank of Montreal in Morrisburg and from his community service on the original Old Home Week Committee, the Municipal Mural Project, the Lost Villages Society, the fundraising committee for the expansion of the Winchester Hospital, and as a canvasser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.  

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 60 years, he served in many leadership positions in the Church and completed two service missions in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife, Kay.

Glenn was born in Kingston, Ontario, on July 3, 1928, to George Wilmer Keyes and Lulu May Orser and was raised on a farm on Wolfe Island.  

He attended high school in Kingston, and after graduation he joined the Bank of Montreal where he worked for 34 years – beginning in Kingston.  

He was transferred to Morrisburg where he met Kathleen (Kay) Markell, and they were married on June 18, 1951.  

They raised five children in Toronto, and then moved back to Morrisburg in 1970.  

In his younger days, Glenn enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and curling.  

Glenn was predeceased by his wife Kay in 2006.  In 2008, he married Jeannine Maleau and they enjoyed two and a half years together before Jeannine passed away in 2011.

Glenn is survived by his sister, Doreen Crowder of Calgary, Alberta, his five children, Linda (Wayne) Snook, Kevin (Susan) Keyes, Ian (Cindy) Keyes, Randy (Julie) Keyes and Anita Keyes, as well as his 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.  

His children are grateful to Glenn for his legacy of caring, service, patience and integrity.  We miss you, Dad.

His funeral service was held on February 19, 2013, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cornwall.  

Interment will follow in the spring at Fairview Cemetery in Mariatown, Ontario.

A lifetime resident of the area, Kathleen Harkness (nee Sloan) passed away at the Woodland Villa Nursing Home in Long Sault on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. She was 98.

Kathleen was born in Edwardsburg Township on November 13, 1914, to her parents Bert and Carrie (McFadden) Sloan.  She was the youngest child with one older sister Estella and two brothers Lloyd and Stanley.  She attended the local public school and went on to further her education in Spencerville.  

Kathleen then moved to Iroquois to work at Brouse’s Dairy. She loved to spend her evenings and Sundays skating with her friends at the rink which is where she met her future husband Harold Wesley Harkness who played hockey there.  

On Nov. 4th 1936, Harold and Kathleen were married in Shanly, and they began their married life on the Harkness farm on the 4th concession of Matilda Township, which they developed into a successful dairy farm and apple orchard named ‘Harbeth Farm’  

Kathleen and Harold were never apart from each other and their lives were a true partnership. Their lives were full and busy but they always made time for their daughter Mary, helping her with school projects and taking her to movies, picnics, ball games and hockey games.  

They were great fans of the Inkerman Rockets and the Morrisburg Combines. Their daughter Mary especially enjoyed the visits to the ice cream parlour on Saturday night after shopping. 

Kathleen also found time for gardening, canning and freezing the produce. She was a great cook and baker.  She made beautiful birthday cakes.  

Kathleen was a great seamstress. As a result Mary always had a new dress for every occasion and Kathleen made sure that Mary always wore the right socks and shoes to go with the dresses she made.  

She always found time for her church–Dundela United, and she served for many years on the Matilda Women’s Institute. 

Kathleen worked hard every day and she used to fall asleep at night reading the Ottawa Journal.

When Harold became ill in 1979, they sold the farm and they retired to a home on Orchard Way in Morrisburg.  Harold died in late 1979, and Kathleen had to face her life without him.  

She then began to devote more time to her church, Lakeshore Drive United, the SSS Christian Womens’ Group, Morrisburg Women’s Institute, the senior citizens group, bowling and she spent many hours making quilts for the Red Cross and for her family.  Some were displayed at the quilt shows and sold.

Kathleen always put other people first and was always concerned with those around her.  She was a very unselfish person and she never judged others.    

She was happiest with a pot of soup brewing, her famous apple pie in the oven and her salads with the vegetables cut in small  pieces all exactly the same size. The family always knew Kathleen’s sandwiches at any function–they were the ones with crusts cut off.

In 1959, Harold and Kathleen welcomed their son-in-law Al into the family and soon became best friends.

In 1960, their first grandson Steve arrived, and in 1963, their second grandson Doug. 

Steve and Doug spent a lot of time on the farm with Poppy and Grandma and soon learned the rules were much more lenient there than at home.  They always went home with a toy and a treat.

As her grandsons grew and began families of their own, Kathleen welcomed, with love, her granddaughters-in-law Deana and Janis, her great-grandsons Chris, Scott, Patrick and her great-granddaughter Kendra. 

They were all very special to her.

After 18 years on Orchard Way, Kathleen’s health started a downward trend and she moved to the Iroma apartments in Iroquois.  Her many friends, new and old and Iroquois United church now became her focal point in life. 

She was dedicated to her church and to her family and depended on God’s love to guide her.  Kathleen lived at the Hartford retirement home for a short time and finally at the Woodland Villa.

Kathleen is survived by her daughter Mary Bueley of Morrisburg, her grandsons Stephen (Deana) Bueley of Edmonton and Doug (Janis) Bueley of Winchester and great-grandchildren Christopher, Scott, Patrick and Kendra. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.  

She was predeceased by her husband Harold, her son-in-law Allan Bueley, her sister Estella Connors and her brothers Lloyd and Stanley Sloan.     

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Monday, April 8th at 11 a.m., with Rev. Janet Evans officiating.  

Interment followed at Dundela Cemetery. 

Pallbearers were Patrick Bueley, Wayne Disheau, Charles Waddell and Donald Barkley.

A lifetime resident of the Williamsburg area, Dorothy Whitteker passed away at the Osgoode Care Centre on Wednesday, October 16, 2013.  She was 94.

Dorothy was born on March 7, 1919, on a farm in the Township of Williamsburg to her parents William Levi and Allie Flo Casselman. She was the eldest of four siblings, Orval, Gertrude and Bill. 

Dorothy’s family was the most important in her life. Over the years she has told her family many stories about her family and her childhood days. She worked hard on the farm, always helping others. She preferred working outside with her dad, but also helped her mom because her mom was small and sometimes in poor health, so she had to help her in the house a lot.  

She grew up in a very large extended family home.  Dorothy’s Aunt Della and her four daughters lived with them for many years.  They were like older sisters to Dorothy, and she still could name them and talk about them this summer past when she looked at pictures. 

Her grandparents lived with them too. So there were three families with three wood stoves, and 13 people eating meals together. 

Then on Sundays other relatives would come to visit.  What a wonderful way to grow up as a child.

On September 6, 1939, Dorothy married Paul Whitteker and from this union came three children Isla, Garry and Jim, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  

Dorothy had a loving, caring, giving, unconditional love for her family that could only come from the heart of God.  

She was an excellent cook and baker, and she always made sure that her entire family was well fed at all times whether she was making them bologna sandwiches, cake, cookies, pickles or one of her other tasty treats. 

Dorothy loved cats and she enjoyed gardening, playing cards, fishing and knitting.

All of her family members have benefitted from her abilities as a seamstress because they all have her hand knit dishcloths, scarves, mittens, socks and afghans.

Next to Dorothy’s love for her family was her love for the farm. Dorothy helped Paul deliver the mail, but she loved the farm, and nothing touched her heart more than being on her farm. It was not just a place where she grew up, but it was where she was supposed to be, and wanted to be all her life. She loved to go to the barn to milk the cows.

Dorothy always put the needs of her family ahead of her own.  She was a very generous lady, and she provided a very positive influence on the lives of all of the members of her family.

Dorothy is survived by her children Isla Whitteker of Orleans and Garry (Mary) of R.R.# 3 Williamsburg, her brother Bill Casselman of Williamsburg and her sister-in-law Audrey A. Casselman of Williamsburg. 

Dorothy will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Shelley (Vince) Cousineau, Tracy (Geoff) Hare, Shaw (Suzanne) Knelsen, Tammy (Dan) McIntosh, Stacey (Raymond) Lee and great-grandchildren Brooke, Brandon, Tyrnan, Ivy Grace, Ryan, Samuel, Michael and Jordan. 

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Paul, her infant daughter Julie, her son James Paul, her sister Gertrude Strader, her brother Orval Casselman, her sister-in-law Audrey H. Casselman and her brother-in-law Lyell “Sib” Strader.     

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Sunday, October 20th from noon until time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. The service was conducted by Rev. Norine Gullons. Interment followed at Spruce Haven Cemetery, Brinston.

Pallbearers were Shaw Knelsen, Dale Casselman, Alan Casselman, Dan McIntosh, Vince Cousineau and Geoff Hare.
