Jose Goncalves

Born in Pierre Tautreau (Ville) Montreal, Quebec, on February 7, 1956, long-time Iroquois resident Jane (nee Keeler) Ewing passed away suddenly at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Thursday, January 3, 2013. She was 56 years old.

Jane was very active in community life and well known in Iroquois and Morrisburg. 

She was the owner of Pokey’s Place in Morrisburg, and for many years she served the community as the coordinator of the Morrisburg  (BIA).

For many years prior to opening Pokey’s Place, Jane worked alongside her mother, Ann as a typesetter at the Iroquois Post/Chieftan newspaper in Iroquois. At times she also doubled as a receptionist. 

Jane also worked alongside her husband Bill in their cleaning business, cleaning the Bank of Montreal for 30 years. Working as a secretary at the Iroquois Municipal Office, Jane attained her AMCT designation in 1998.  

Jane was always ready and willing to help everyone. She served her home town of Iroquois as a councilor and Hydro Commissioner during the last term of council before the amalgamation of South Dundas.  

She served on the Iroquois Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Board of the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Anyone who knew Jane knew of her special affection for all types of animals especially stray cats and dogs.

Jane was the loving daughter of the late David and Ann Keeler of Iroquois.

Jane is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Bill Ewing. She will be sadly missed by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and close special friends Gwen and Rod McGill of Iroquois and Joan and Jim Grant of Cardinal.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home Iroquois, on Tuesday, January 8th from 6-9 p.m.

Inurnment will take place at the Iroquois Point Cemetery on Friday, May 24th, 2013.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Bernard Henry William (Bill) Albers of Brinston, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2013, in Kemptville District Hospital. He was in his 76th year.

Bill was born on November 8, 1937, at Emmen, The Netherlands to the late Bernard Hienrick Albers and Maria Helena Valke.  

When Bill was a teenager his family emigrated from Klazeinaveen in the Netherlands to Canada where they settled in Alberta.  

He later moved to the Brinston area, where he owned and operated Bill’s Refrigeration and Repairs for over 25 years.   

Bill will be sadly missed by his wife Alberta (Steele -Richards), son Joe (Irene) of Iroquois and daughters Louise of Cornwall, Sharon Van Bridger (Greg) of Morrisburg and Linda of Cornwall. Bill will also be missed by his brother Ben of Iroquois.

He will be dearly missed by stepdaughters Betty-Ann Jeffery (Allen) of Stittsville, Brenda DeJong (Ed) of Winchester Springs and stepsons David Richards (Kathy) of Chesterville, Ron Richards (Myra) of Calgary, Don Richards (Elle) of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and Scott Richards (Tammy) of Landsdowne.  

Grandpa/Poppa will be missed by 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, as well as two expected great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by brothers: Bernard of Holland, John of Nova Scotia, Henry of Brockville, Martin of Brinston, George of Cornwall, and sisters Alaida of Holland, Catherine (Kitty) of Holland, Ann Westover of Barwick and Mary Palmer of Brockville. .

Uncle Bill will be missed by many nieces and nephews.

Bill rested at the Byers Funeral Home, South Mountain, where visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, August 19. 

A Funeral Mass was held at the Mountain Township Agriculture Hall, on Tuesday, August 20, at 11 a.m. 

The pallbearers were Bradley Wylie, Rick Albers, Don Richards, David Richards, Dean McDermott and Danny Ault.

By family request, donations may be made to the Dundas County Hospice, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

A lifetime resident of the area, Ruth Casselman passed away peacefully at her son’s home on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. She was 97.

Ruth was born in Williamsburg, on February 24, 1918, to her parents Howard and Ethel Merkley (nee Alford).  She attended local schools, and in 1940 she graduated from Ottawa Normal School.

On July 21, 1948, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, Ruth married Cecil Casselman and together they had two children, Mary and Michael.  

A dedicated teacher and principal, Ruth’s teaching career began in the rural schools of Dundas county. In 1960, she moved to Grenville county, and taught at Oxford-on-Rideau.  The Augusta board appointed Ruth principal of Maynard Public School in 1961.  From 1964-67 she was principal at Algonquin Public School and she spent the last nine years of her teaching career as principal of Maitland Public School.

During her years in the teaching profession, Ruth held the welfare of her pupils foremost in her mind. Her qualities of honesty and integrity stood her in good stead, in whatever community she served.  

Ruth was a dedicated member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, and she served as a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Women for many years.  

Ruth is survived by her children Mary Osborne (Fred) of R.R. # 1 Williamsburg and Mike (Cindy) of R.R.# 1 Williamsburg, her grandchildren Ryan, Sheena, Kaitlin and her great-grandson Isaac.

She was predeceased by her husband Cecil and her sisters Hilda Marcellus, Trude Barkley, Edna Merkley and Rena Merkley.  She is also survived by nieces and nephews.  

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Friday, March 6th from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, March 7th from 10 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. The service was conducted by Rev. Diane Raddatz.  

Spring interment of cremated remains will be at Maple Ridge Cemetery, Chesterville.
