‘Bike bombing’ for cancer care

Have you seen colourful bikes scattered around the countryside lately? Well, you’re not the only one!

In hopes of raising awareness about their upcoming Heel ‘n Wheel event, volunteers have come together to place bikes and running shoes at various prominent locations across the Winchester District Memorial Hospital region.

These bikes also have a sign affixed to them reading www.HeelNWheel.ca, referring to the WDMH Foundation’s new walking and cycling event, by the same name.

This ‘bike bombing’ was done to mark the beginning of online registration for the much anticipated event which will take place this coming September 8, 2012.

There will be a coordinated effort to have walkers leave each of the seven starting locations of Greely, Osgoode, Russell, Crysler, Finch, Morrisburg and South Mountain at 8 a.m. Cyclists will leave at 2 p.m.

The event is open to all ages to participate and families are encouraged as there are lower fund raising minimums for registered children and families.

In hopes of fostering friendly competition, fund raising challenges are invited: for example, the banks throughout the catchment area can challenge each other to a fund raising contest. This goes the same for all of the townships, high schools, elementary schools, pharmacies, grocery stores, etc.

There will be prizes for the top fund raisers in each category: top adult, top child, top team, top bank, top township, top high school, top elementary school.

The Heel ’n Wheel will wrap up with a celebration barbecue in front of WDMH, complete with musical entertainment, children’s activities, and a presentation of awards.
