Addition to D.E.S. Environmental Services Inc

Following an ongoing investigation into several reported break-ins occurring during the month of April in South Dundas, Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry and Grenville County Ontario Provincial Police Crime Unit members have arrested and charged four adults. 

Details were released May 7. 

Criminal Code of Canada search warrants were executed at two residences in Edwardsburgh Township resulting in several items of stolen property recovered; consisting of drugs, assorted electronics, hunting equipment, hand/power tools, lawn tractor/gardening products and cash.

Allan Robinson (42) of Edwardsburgh Township is charged with;

– Break, Enter a Place – Commit Indictable Offence (4 counts)

– Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 (4 counts)

– Mischief Under $5,000 (2 counts)

– Possession of a Controlled Substance – Cocaine.

He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Morrisburg on June 9, 2015.

Patricia Mellon (36) of Cardinal, Ontario is charged with;

– Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

She is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Morrisburg on June 9, 2015.

Christos Valaveris (50) of Prescott, Ontario is charged with;

– Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000

– Fail to Comply with Recognizance.

He was held in custody pending an appearance (bail) at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville.

Tara McEnaney (41) of Prescott, Ontario is charged with;

– Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000.

She was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville on June 5, 2015.

The Iroquois Golf Course Board is going to be eliminated.

Formed when the municipality was operating the Iroquois Golf Course, the board consists of the members of South Dundas council.

South Dundas and Seaway Golf have a lease agreement, but that lease is with South Dundas, represented by the council, and not the board.

“The bills are being paid, and it the golf course is not costing the municipality any money,” said South Dundas chief administrative officer Steve McDonald. “The board has served its purpose. There is no longer a need for the board.”

“I don’t think we’re going back in to the golfing business,” said South Dundas mayor Steven Byvelds. 

“Eliminating the board will just eliminate a layer of bureaucracy,” he added.

Staff was directed by council to bring a resolution to dissolve the board to council at their next meeting.

Following the elimination of that board, any issues regarding the lease agreement will go directly to council.

Weather, among other factors, threw a wrench into the plan to get a first lift of asphalt put down on Lakeshore Drive this year. 

Friday, the contractor working on the Lakeshore Drive sewer project was on site doing some grading work, but Chris Bazinet, manager of public works for South Dundas, confirmed that the planned first course of asphalt will wait until spring.

“I met with the contractor earlier this week,” said Bazinet. “They will get the grading done, but the road will remain gravel until spring. Basically, the contractor ran out of time to get it done.” 

Bazinet explained that this snow event and cold weather did cause concern from the municipality about the quality of the first lift of asphalt if it is put down now. Because of this concern he felt it would be prudent to leave the stretch of road gravel for winter.

Another factor in this decision was that some potential storm sewer issues were discovered during construction. They would like to investigate those further. 

South Dundas, along with the Counties of SDG who are partners in the storm sewer project, are going to have some camera work done over the next couple of weeks. The results of that investigation may mean that the section or roadway they had planned to pave this year would have to be dug up again in the spring. 

Rather than risk asphalt quality issues and possibly dig up new asphalt in spring, South Dundas officials decided it would be more prudent to wait.
