Kraft food challenge

After a blockbuster summer season which saw the Upper Canada Playhouse parking lot in Morrisburg jam-packed for the last three months, one would expect things to slow down in the fall. Not so at this popular entertainment attraction.  

Things are busier than ever with box office and production staff working feverishly to keep up with the pace. 

The Cemetery Club, the last show of the summer season, continues to run until September 29th, and is proving to be a fantastic hit with Playhouse audiences. 

Hot on the heels of this show will be the return of Marshall Button in Lucien, running October 2-6. 

It will be followed by the terrific live big band show Vegas Knights playing October 18-27. 

Both shows are nearly sold out at this point with a limited number of seats available for some performances. 

In fact, The Playhouse has just added a new performance date of October 2 at 2 p.m. for Lucien.  

Button’s character of Lucien is one of the most popular entertainment figures to ever grace The Playhouse stage. Audience members flock to hear Button’s wise and witty New Brunswick mill-worker’s take on everything from politics to marriage. 

This renowned show has played to thousands of people throughout the country and beyond and continues to hold them spell-bound and laughing hysterically in theatres everywhere.  

Vegas Knights is also proving to be popular with audiences who look forward to experiencing the big band sounds of this tribute to the Great Vegas Stars. Legends like Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Tom Jones and others come to life through the extraordinary talents of headline star Derek Marshall and a live 7-piece orchestra. 

After these exciting fall shows, The Playhouse releases its new 2014 Season at the beginning of November. 

The current season concludes with a spectacular holiday production of A Christmas Carol. The crew will be busy constructing a new revolving set while the large cast of actors and singers prepare to treat the Playhouse audience to a magical and musical family experience. 

As in the past several years, the holiday show will come complete with a terrific concert filled with favourite Christmas songs and lively dancing.

As of January 1st 2015, the Ontario government has put in place new regulations to protect the public from tobacco and its harmful effects.

The new regulations that have been added to the Smoke-Free Ontario Act have made it illegal to smoke on bar and restaurant patios, and on (and within 20 metres of) playgrounds, and public sports fields and surfaces. Selling tobacco on the campuses of postsecondary education institutions is now illegal as well.

Strengthening the ban on smoking in bars, restaurants, playgrounds and public sports fields

In the past, smoking was only banned on covered or partially covered patios in Ontario. The new regulations have made it illegal to smoke on all outdoor bar and restaurant patios.

The province has also banned smoking on and around playgrounds, public sport fields and surfaces. The ban applies to all outdoor public sports facilities such as basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, ice rinks, tennis courts, splash pads and swimming pools that are owned by a municipality, the province or a postsecondary education institution. Besides sport fields, it is also illegal to smoke on sport surfaces, in spectator areas around sport fields and 20 metres surrounding these locations. The ban includes playgrounds at hotels, motels and inns as well.

Banning the sale of tobacco products on school campuses

Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has also banned the sale of tobacco products on the campuses of postsecondary education institutions, such as colleges and universities. The new regulations apply to buildings and areas that are owned or leased by postsecondary education institutions or student unions and that are used for students’ education programs, recreational activities or residential services.

For the first time ever, Winchester District Memorial Hospital will have four obstetricians, and that fourth obstetrician will be part of the St. Lawrence Medical Clinic group.

“That really reflects the growth in our maternal care program,” said Cholly Boland, WDMH CEO, when he announced that Dr. Roger Perron will join the hospital full time in the new year.

Dr. Perron says he has found the best kept secret in Ontario in discovering Winchester District Memorial Hospital and the surrounding region. 

Dr. Perron is WDMH’s newest specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. 

He will deliver babies and perform general gynecological surgery with a specialty in minimally-invasive procedures. He will practice at the St. Lawrence Medical Clinics in Morrisburg, Iroquois and Ingleside.

“I came to Winchester Hospital to provide summer coverage and my wife and I fell in love with the area,” he says. “We didn’t even know it existed.” He has equal praise for the hospital. “It’s the best kept secret around. The people here are great. And the operating rooms are magnificent. Any tertiary care centre would be happy to have them.”

With 25 years of experience, Dr. Perron says he knew early on that obstetrics was his passion. “It’s one area of medicine where people actually want to see you,” he smiles. “And if I’m going to be up in the middle of the night, I might as well deliver a baby and make everyone happy.”

When not delivering babies or performing surgery, Dr. Perron says he loves to hike, canoe, fish or do anything outdoors. “We seem to never spend any time in the house,” he laughs.

Because all of WDMHs other OBGYNs are focused in the north of the hospital’s catchment area, it was natural for Dr. Perron to come to the south, to the SLMC. He will be living in Morrisburg, which he very much looks forward to. He was looking for a retirement lifestyle, although he intends to fully practise medicine for about 10 years and then to assist for about six more. He takes referrals as he does not have a primary care practice.

Dr. Perron comes here from Guelph. He is the first OBGYN to join the St. Lawrence Medical Clinic team since Dr. Gerry Rosenquist, one of the SLMC founders.

Perron grew up in northern Ontario. He did his undergraduate schooling at Lakehead, Masters and PhD at University of Guelph, and med. school and residency at McMaster. He has three children and two grandchildren.
