Airplane used in law enforcement

During the South Dundas council meeting on April 3rd, Chief Chris McDonough of South Dundas Fire and Emergency Services recommended the purchase of a SCBA compressor.

He recommended purchasing the SCBA compressor from D&L Fire Equipment of Ingleside.

“They are a specialized supplier for this type of equipment and lucky for us they’re in Ingleside.”

“Last year we purchased a ‘Scott re-fill station’ from D&L which was the first of a two part purchase to bring this piece of equipment up to current standards with our health and safety regulations.”

“I did sole source this,” said McDonough.

“This is a specialty item which takes approximately six to eight weeks for delivery and given the age and operating condition of our current compressor, given the condition of this piece of equipment, time will not permit for competitive bids.” 

He explained that the current SCBA compressor has “been limping along. It’s at the end of its life.”

Referring to the close proximity of the company and to the maintenance program, McDonough said, “I feel that it will save money.”

Councillor Archie Mellan said, “we need it. Get it done.”

Mayor Steven Byvelds was concerned with the sole sourcing component of the request, but agreed that McDonough “had good valid reasons.”

The recommendation was approved.

McDonough informed council that the lifespan for this project is at least 15 years. The cost, accounted for in the 2012 capital budget, is approximately $30,000.

South Dundas council granted its support to another small rooftop solar project in South Dundas at the January 15 council meeting.

A handful of similar projects were supported at the December meeting. 

This month the support is for a project on the property of Glenn and Margaret Swerdfeger, located along Carman Road.

The support or non-support of the municipality truly has no bearing on whether or not a project will proceed, according to municipal officials.

Council is firmly divided on the issue. Out of protest against the program which has a negative impact on the rates paid by hydro users, Mayor Steven Byvelds and Councillor Jim Graham refuse to support any of these projects. 

However, they are the minority, so in the end council is supportive of all of the applicants seeking similar support.

Rather than waste time at council meetings having the same discussion over and over again, council has asked staff to prepare a policy that will provide blanket support for these small rooftop solar projects taking place on private property.

Hi. I am a very thoughtful lady, but I am sad. I didn’t think that when I got away from my home in Morrisburg that I wouldn’t be able to find my way back and would end up at the South Dundas Animal Shelter. According to that nice lady who took my picture, “I am just beautiful, although I do need a grooming.” I am a collie mix, about four years old, and compact in size, which is perfect for snuggling with my best friend(s). I have beautiful black, gold and white colours. The picture lady was so nice, that when she offered me a treat, I offered her my paw and showed her what a loving pal I can be. I am not sure why she was sad and had tears in her eyes when she left, but I am hoping the picture she took helps me to get a nice home. I’m a real tail wagger when I am happy. (This loving little dog was picked up in Morrisburg two weeks ago with a chain still dangling from her collar. She can be reclaimed (or adopted by a new family) by calling 613-543-2980.)
