Local seniors on the podium

 

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions were handed a tough 3-2 loss by the visiting Gananoque Islanders on Friday, December 23.

After playing to a one-goal first period draw, the two teams remained on an even keel, ending the second period, deadlocked 2-2.

The deciding marker was scored at 8:28 of the third period when the Islanders’ Graeme Moore was set up by Tyler Murray to deposit the winner behind Lions’ goaltender Mikael Dion.

The Islanders opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the first period with a Tyler Murray goal. Providing the assists were Wyatt Cota and Dillon Black.

Late in the frame, the Lions answered back with a Chris Rutley goal assisted by Clarke Veenstra and Matt Ouimet.

At 7:02 of the second period, Wyatt Cota again gave the Islanders a one-goal lead, and they held that until the final minutes of the frame. 

With just under two minutes remaining in the second period, Michel Lefebvre (from Alex Steingruber) counted for the Lions to even it 2-2.

That set the stage for the winner from Moore in the third period.

The Lions out shot the Rideau division’s third place Islanders, 49-42.

Both teams were assessed four minor penalties and the Lions picked up an additional 10 minute misconduct to Clarke Veenstra (who clocked the entire 18 penalty minutes assessed to the Lions).

With a minimum of games played over the holiday weekend, the Lions remain five points behind the fourth place Char-Lan Rebels. They have one game this week, and that was a make-up game against South Grenville, played last night, Tuesday, December 27.

The Winchester Hawks and the Casselman Viking are now tied for the St. Lawrence Division’s top spot, both with 49 points.

The Alexandria Glens are in third place, with 37 points, while the Rebels have 24 points. 

The Rideau-St. Lawrence Division teams are now gearing for the 2012 Showcase Event being hosted by Winchester. The Lions will open the event at 9:30 a.m. in a game against South Grenville.

The South Dundas “River Rat Treasures” Novice B Lions renewed their battle of Dundas County last Monday night in Chesterville tying their division rival North Dundas Demons, 4-4.

Playing their fifth game in three days, the Lion’s needed two third period goals to tie up the Demons. Kayne McCadden’s goal with 1:58 left in the third period proved to be the final goal in the 4-4 tie. 

After winning the face-off back to the defense McCadden regained the puck and wristed a shot high in the air which hit a Demons defender and bounced directly into the net. Spencer Barclay and Trent Rae picked up assists.

Earlier in the third, McCadden stole the puck away from a defender and wristed a shot that bounced up and over the Demon’s goalie. Ben Lapier then jumped on the free puck shoveling it into the open net.

The Demons had gained a 4-2 lead early in the third period and had scored late in the second to break a 2-2 tie. 

Owen Fetterly opened the Lions scoring on a pass from behind the net by Ben Lapier. Adam Barclay responded for the Demons beating Lion’s goalie Brendan Shaver.

In the second, the Demon scored first on a goal by Delaney Johnston. The Lions responded when Owen Fetterly cut off a Demon attacker at the Lion’s blue line and moved it quickly to Lapier who went the distance around a Demon defender and snuck a puck by Demons goalie Joshua Dagenias just inside the right post.

The Lion’s extended their unbeaten streak to eight on Sunday afternoon when they defeated the Brockville #1 Braves, 3-1. The Braves opened the scoring in the first period on a shot that Trent Rae tried to deflect away from the net. Shaver would shut the door the rest of the way with help from his defenceman Cassidy Bilmer.

The Lion’s drew even in the second period on a left wing break by Nolan Henry. Emytt Fetterly picked up an assist on the play. 

The Lions took the lead in the third on the power play when Joshua Broad centred a pass to Henry in the slot but had it knocked away to where Ben Lapier was standing to net the game winning goal.

Lapier scored again moments later on a backhander. Spencer Barclay picked up the assist.

The South Dundas “River Rat Treasures” Novice B Lions play two home games this weekend, Saturday at 10 a.m. versus North Dundas on Lions Day and Sunday versus Smith Falls at 1 p.m.

Thanks to a solid performance from goaltender Les McAllister throughout the tournament and a two goal effort from Fern Gauvreau in the final, the Morrisburg Senior Combines skated away from the Ontario 55 plus Senior Winter Games with gold medals.

The games were held in Huntsville, Ontario February 26-28, and the Morrisburg-based Combines laced up as representatives of the local District 8 which includes Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott, Russell and Akwesasne.

They were one of 12 teams that played in the 65 year plus division and one of two teams representing District 8 in hockey.

The other was the Cornwall Seaway Blades who captured Bronze Medals in the 55 plus division.

The Combines opened with a 6-0 win over Windsor/Essex and then tied York 3-3 to qualify for the quarter finals. Providing the opposition in the quarter final was Grey Bruce, who fell to the Combines 4-0, a second shut out for McAllister in three games.

Next up was Muskoka/Nipissing in semi-final action. In this game, the Combines jumped into an early 4-0 lead, and never looked back as they cruised to an 8-0 win.

The Combines now found themselves in the gold medal game, with London providing the opposition. This time out it was a much closer encounter, but thanks to the two goal effort from Gauvreau, the Combines edged out their opponents, 2-1.

The win qualifies the Combines to compete in the upcoming Canadian Games in Edmonton.

The Cornwall Seaway Blades lost their opener 3-2 to London. They followed that with a 3-0 win over Haliburton to advance to quarter finals play where they defeated Huntsville 6-1.

A loss to Brampton in the quarter finals put them into the bronze medal game against York. A 2-0 win, with goaltender Dave Alguire in net, earned them the bronze medals.
