He’s made his list and he’s checked it twice…team manager Les McAllister has finalized the Morrisburg based seniors hockey team that will represent District 8 at the Ontario Senior Winter Games coming up in Huntsville, February 26-28, 2013.

Now in their second year in the 65 plus games category, McAllister says the team that doesn’t play together on a regular basis, will probably play a couple of exhibition games in January and February.

He says everyone is looking forward to the games.

“The competition at these games keeps getting better and better,” says McAllister who is the team’s goaltender. “It’s a really good time, and as the word gets out about it, more and more people try out.”

McAllister also credits the games with keeping seniors active. Guys at our age aren’t playing hockey for anything really meaningful except for this. I probably wouldn’t be playing hockey today if it weren’t for these games.”

The local team has nine returning players for the 2013 games. In addition to McAllister they include Ron Alguire of Lunenberg, Steve Casselman of Morrisburg, Doug Casselman of Williamsburg, Fern Gauvreau of Kingston, Jack Haines of Cornwall, Bryan Helmer of Winchester, Lester Holmes of Mountain and John Adams of Morrisburg.

The new kids on the bench are Alan Styrnadka and Harry McIntyre both of Ottawa, and Sonny McLean of Kingston.

The games feature hockey in two age categories, 65 plus for the players listed above, and a 55 plus category.

Representing District 8 in the 55 plus category are the Cornwall Seaway Blades who defeated Long Sault 8-3 and Alexandria 6-1 for the right to advance.

Coached by Pete Clement, the Blades include Paul Seguin, Earl McBean, Dave Alguire (goaltender), Alex Herrington, Brian Reasbeck, Terry Grant, Claude Regnier, Vic Leroux, Gary Lalonde, Claude Bourck, Dave MacDonald, Ben Guindon, Randy Conners and Rick Cameron.

The Ontario Senior Games are a multi-sport championship for athletes 55 years and older. The 2013 games at Huntsville will be attended by some 1,000 athletes, coaches and officials involved in 10 sports including alpine and nordic skiing, badminton, bowling, curling, duplicate bridge, hockey, prediction skating, table tennis and volleyball.

The outcome to the 2012 regular season of the Men’s Roller Hockey League will all come down to this week’s (Thursday, August 9) play when the New Blue and White Lightning meet head on for first place.

The two added another pair of wins last Thursday night, August 2, and for three weeks running they remain tied for the league’s top spot.

With the season schedule calling for the first place team to play the second place team (and third versus fourth place) in the final regular season games, this Thursday night’s action should lead to the crowning of a regular season champ.

Last Thursday night, the New Blue doubled the Red Rockets 14-7, while White Lightning collected a 13-7 win from the Morewood Monkeys.

The Red Rockets hold down the league’s third place with nine points, while the Morewood Monkey dwell in the basement with just three.

It was another Justin Elliott night as the New Blue went to work on the Red Rockets, jumping ahead early on for a 5-2 lead in the first period.

Elliott connected for a total of seven goals and added a pair of assists while Connor Hodgson collected six counters off Rockets’ goaltender Chris Sloan. Jamie McIntosh potted a pair and Randy Markell added a single in the effort.

Chris Phifer was the big gun for the Rockets with four goals and Chad McMillan and David Patterson nabbed Blue goaltender Will McIntire for singles.

In other action, Lightning struck early against the Monkeys for a 4-1 lead. Although the Monkeys counted three goals in each of the second and third periods, they were never able to catch up.

Tyler Gallinger led the Lightning scoring with five goals, and Brandon Buma backed him with four. Rob Thurler collected a pair and helped out on seven others, while Billy Henderson and Tyler Brown were good for singles.

For the Monkeys, Jake Byers scored three goals, Chris Embury collected a pair and Mike Thompson and Tyler Jones beat Lightning goaltender Barret Brundige for singles.

Kyle Shane was in net for the Monkeys’ loss.

Action begins this Thursday night at 8 p.m. between the Blue and Lightning.

Cassie Hummel, left, and Maggie Wells got the Seaway District High School Track and Field team, off to a good start, at the Ottawa University Invitational meet on Thursday, May 1, when they threw their way to a pair of gold medals and then added one silver and one bronze.

Hummel collected a gold medal in midget girls javelin with a p.b. throw of 21.93m and a bronze in midget girls shot put with a p.b. throw of 8.20m. 

Wells produced a 23.12 m gold medal throw in midget girls discus and a 9.60m shot put throw for a silver medal. The Seaway athletes finished in second and third in midget shot put behind Abby McMann of Immaculate H.S. who won with a throw of 10.02m. 

While Hummel and Wells have thrown shot before, it was Hummel’s first attempt in javelin and Wells’ first time at discus. They both admit, they surprised themselves with their gold medal results and are now working at perfecting their technique. 

Of her first time in javelin, Hummel says, “I just wanted to try it, but I didn’t think I would do that well.” 

Said Maggie, “We both learned discus the night before in the pouring rain. We had a 15 minute lesson.” 

They were well instructed in those 15 minutes, said Trevor Thompson who, with Mark Lewis, is this year coaching the Seaway track and field team. Both are delighted that the team has climbed from last year’s record low number to 15 athletes this year. 

“We are mostly grade 9’s,” said Thompson. “But that is good. We are rebuilding, and hopefully they will stay with it.” 

In addition to the medals won by Hummel and Wells, runner Brynn Gilmour claimed a bronze medal in junior girls 100m dash with a time 13.41 seconds and Kaitlyn Stewart claimed a bronze medal in midget girls long jump with a 4.17m jump.

Some other athletes who compete last week were Quinn Horne, Kyle Ault, Cole Thompson, Johnny Strackholder, Keanne Van Dodewward, Dillan Sullivan, Ashley Whitteker and Lorenzo Garcia.
