A new partnership officially kicks off today, Wednesday, February 17, when the Historical Society of South Dundas partners history with today’s technology to launch a digital archive section to its website www.southdundas.net.
The archive section will serve two purposes says Society vice-president Phillip Blancher; to provide viewers an easily accessible window into the history of South Dundas and to enable the Society to collect historical data/photos from the public.
“Because we are a newer organization, we don’t have the volume of archival data that other historical associations have, and we don’t have the physical space to collect a lot of things,” says Blancher. “So we came up with the idea for an online-based digital archive.”
“We are now looking to the public to ‘crowd source’ information for it.”
For the archive, the Society is seeking photographs, maps, documents, clippings anything that can be scanned and put online.
“This way, the donors get to keep their materials, but at the same time share what they have.”
The Society is offering the service of scanning and has an email account to which people can send their photos and materials to be published on the website and through social media.
The Society’s email address is archive@southdundas.net
“People submitting their photos need to keep in mind that they will be publicly shared,” says Blancher.
Blancher says the Society is looking for everyone’s story. “It can be a photo of a hockey team say in the 1960’s or a family photo from the 1920’s.”
Public events, historical information on clubs/organizations, buildings, stories of the people who are the heart and soul of the South Dundas community, is all information being sought.
In addition, Blancher says the public is invited to seek out information on things they may have or are interested in through the website.
“We are mandated as an historical society and are registered through the Ontario Historical Society. We are open to the public, and we welcome new members.”
“We are trying to enable everyone to share the history of the area that they have tucked away at home, because there is a lot of great history here in our South Dundas community that needs to have a public forum.”
The Society currently has a Facebook page, Historical Society of South Dundas, that links to its website.
Blancher says the Historical Society of South Dundas gets a lot of requests to help identify someone or something and a lot of genealogy requests. The southdundas.net website and the Historical Society of South Dundas Facebook page are great tools for people to get help by asking their questions on a public forum.
The Society is extremely excited about the benefits the new Digital section will provide and is now wait
