Demons, Braves wrestle for East Division top spot

The North Dundas Peewee B Reps Demons had a busy week as they stretched their unbeaten streak to five games with three wins over Cornwall 6-2, NGS 3-0 in Maxville on Saturday, and NGS on home ice in Winchester on Sunday, 5-3.

Last Wednesday in Winchester, the Demons stayed free of the penalty box, and Ben Lapier with four goals and one assist led them to the 6-2 win.

The Colts opened the scoring in the first period, but the Demons responded when Mason Carr picked up the puck from Maxime Paquette and wrapped it in from behind the net beating the Colts goalie to the post.

In a tight second period, the Demons finally took the lead with under four minutes left when attacking forward Mason Carr forced a turnover at the Colts blue line and got the puck to Lapier.

Two minutes later Cole Eikelboom added to the lead when Nolan Henry skated the puck out of the Demons end and made a short pass to Lapier who sent Eikelboom in on a breakaway.

Lapier struck for three more in the third period and the Demons claimed the 6-2 win.

Saturday in Maxville, the Demons blanked the NGS Braves 3-0 with Jordan Papineau in net for the shut out.

The battle for the east division’s first place began as a defensive battle with a scoreless first period.

In the second period, Jaymen Hueff broke through for the Demons on a shot from the corner that caught the NGS goalie leaning away from the post.

The game stayed tight through the second and Papineau was steady turning away all NGS shots.

Midway into the third, Adam Barkley made it 2-0 and Ben Lapier sealed the win with five minutes left in the game.

The rematch was played Sunday, in Winchester, and a 5-3 win thanks to a five-goal, second period explosion allowed the Demons to clearly lay claim to the East Division’s top spot.

The Braves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first with a power-play goal, but after the change in ends the ice was tilted in the Demons favour.

Opening the way was Mason Carr who tipped in a Joshua Broad shot from the slot, and that was followed by a Max Paquette goal, for a 2-1 Demons lead.

Carr struck again off a Ben Lapier draw that turned into a shot on net and the rebound came right to Carr in the slot.

On Lapier’s next shift, Adam Barkley sent him out of the Demons end to make it 4-1.

Adam Barkley scored the fifth and final goal enabling the Demons to carry a 5-1 advantage into the third.

The Demons got two more against Demons goaltender Brendan Shaver in the third to cut the gap to 5-3, but it wasn’t enough to recover from the Demons five goal second period.
